Imho one of the best scooby / social event of the year , & Not to be missed
Recieved today from Jen ( Ex Hants SIDC R/O ) / Organiser Mencap .....
Hello r/o's …oo, been a while since I typed that!
I think most of you know me, but for those who don't, I'm Jen I was Hants R/O for a while - but luckily
Andy's taken that over now!
Hampshire Subaru has assisted in the publicity (aka bullying!) and running of an event for almost 6 years now, called the MENCAP Classic. Hosted down in Somerset - it's a Classic Car 'rally', road based event with an assortment of fantastic vehicles - everything from old porsches, mini's to Morgans and 'modern classics' such as the Evo's and Scoobs.
The primary objective (aside from having a good time) is to raise money for the Lufton MENCAP College to assist their students in having a good education. So far the money from the event has kitted out a barge for the students and allowed the publication of some truly excellent poems, which in turn raised even more money for the college as well as being a huge achievement for the students (I have a copy at home if anyone wants to see).
Last year we had a fantastic turnout of almost 60 Scoobs amongst the total of 140 vehicles, attendees from Essex/Kent/Hampshire and of course the East Sussex crew with their pink hair gel! I'm hoping to get you all back after a year off for what promises to be (in the words of the organisers) 'the best ever!'.
The event will run on the weekend of May 26/27 - bank holiday weekend so you get the Monday to recover! There's a fantastic new system of check points meaning the you can start from whereever you like, drive on the roads that you like and for as long or as short as you like getting as many checkpoints as you can on the day.
This will counter the problem we had before of the Scoobs finishing at 3:30pm and the classic cars being out 'till 7pm! Again, it will be based in and around Yeovil, so there's a choice of the fantastic country roads or the faster roads… or indeed a mixture of both should you desire! It's not a race and not a timed event, so there's no problems insurance wise.
As usual, (and the most important bit!) , there will be a huge party in the evening! Something for everyone with the Charity Auction, 2 stage acts and the traditional disco well into the night run by the local radio station, Ivel FM. Camping and Caravanning is available at the College, although unfortunately no accommodation available as in the previous years. There is a vast number of B&B's or Hotels available in the surround area should you want them though.
All those who have attended in previous years should have received a Christmas Card and the details for next years event, however, if you think any in your region would be interested in attending then I have a collection of entry forms and info I can post out to you, just let me have an address
I've included a small pdf of some of the pics from previous years so you get a feel for it if you haven't attended!
I honestly believe, as many have told me, this is one of the best events of the year. A mixture of driving and socialising, this'll be my 6th year - so it must be good!
Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me or probably best to go straight to Dave if it's anything remotely complicated! Dave Bullen: 07775 734801
dave.bullen@mencap.org.uk, the postal address can be found on the website below.
Information is here: http://www.mencapclassic.co.uk/ , entry is still about the same as a tank of Petrol and it's more than worth it with all money going to MENCAP.
Looking forward to seeing you all,
Jen

Just a couple of points for those on the list above
1. I Have spoken with most now regarding the leaving time , Last year we set of @ noon , ( I Feel we were a little pushed for time ) So how about leaving from Thurrock @ 10pm ( Mrs ESC & i need to get the kids sorted for school & then we are free for the day , Be nice to leave early & stop for a pub lunch on the way @~ Your thoughts
2. I Feel it will be nice for all of us to do the route together ESC Stylee
Feel the " Tiny " Loving ~ So how about we hire a decent set of two way radios , Like we use on the WRC Events , I Can sort this cost is about £10 Per car iirc , These work for miles with no hiss , crackle , or pop ~ Again your thoughts 3. ESC Supporting the mencap rally 2007 ~How about some nice simple T Shirts ( Keep cost down ) Embroided up ? Again your thoughts / Design , Would look great on this event & show our " Togetherness "
~ Your thoughts 4. It looks a great format this year , Just using the road maps , How about a little ESC To Mencap meeting @ The lodge one Sunday afternoon to discuss route / These plans ideas listed above ? ~Again your thoughts
Cheers guys ...

Skoda 09.15am > Thurrock 09.45am to leave @ 10.00am
Pub lunch on the way sounds good. There are a couple of likely ones just off the A303 further on from Stonhenge

Feel the " Tiny " loving ~ So how about we hire a decent set of two way radios , like we use on the WRC events , I can sort this. Cost is about £10 per car IIRC , these work for miles with no hiss , crackle , or pop ~ Again your thoughts? Good idea as our Argos ones would struggle in them there hills.
3. ESC supporting the Mencap Rally 2007 ~ How about some nice simple T shirts ( keep cost down ) embroidered up ? Again your thoughts on design? Would look great on this event & show our " Togetherness "
~ Your thoughts? Just waiting for Ed.
Unless the 2005 ones that some of us have got already can be added to for 2007 a simple new design on a T shirt sounds good.
4. It looks a great format this year , Just using the road maps , How about a little ESC To Mencap meeting @ The lodge one Sunday afternoon to discuss route / These plans ideas listed above? ~ Again your thoughts?
I have a few suggestions about what route we try, which could alter depending on if we do the "Shortest mileage" challenge or not. Sunday lunch/afternoon meet to discuss, to plot & to plan is fine by me.

Leave Thurrock at 10.00am is fine by us.
Yep, WRC radios were very good and worth the £10.
T-Shirts would be good, like you say though, lets try to keep the cost down a bit if poss.

Sunday meet sounds good to me.

Lets hear the thoughts of Cookie , Ade 't & Summers S13XYC
And then we can press ahead from there
You noticed this is like an "Old Skool " ESC Meet
