Had a superb Ford Escort 1.4LX 5 door 1987 model... Went great until it took out a 50ft lamppost ! (Ended up kind of sat there with a steering wheel in my hand and a pile of rust around me !!)
Steering wheel wasn't much use when it rained though - you turned, the car went straight on - hence the above !!!!!
Hey Chiark, how sick is that Chevette site !?! Well funny !!!
Did anyone own the 2.3 litre version !?!! WOW !!!
What's the cr4ppiest car you've ever been in ?! Any former Princess or Morris Ital owners out there ?
Cheers,
John

Nice choice of steed Miles I too had a Bluebird as my first car...unfortunately the only photos of it were the official Police accident ones when I snapped it in half round a tree at 80 mph

There used to be a little magazine (more of a fanzine) available about ten years ago called Jalopy. If you laughed out loud as I did at Jerry*s Escort tale you would have loved it. There were some absolute Gems in it. I contributed a couple of articles about my 3.4 Jag (£500) and my lancia Delta (£100) however they paled into insignificance next to some tales of woe. And the buyers guide was the funniest bit of automotive journalism I ever read.
It was doomed since no-one wants to advertise in a mag that basically rips the p**s out of car manufacturers. If you see a second hand copy anywhere buy it. Sadly missed.

Great idea for a thread, I think us old Gits are going to win this one:-
Bought in 1975, 997, moded it to 1275, fitted clasic capri front suspension (clasic capri was the one before the capri!) Got over took by a bus going up a steep hill once. Believe it or not someone stole the whip ariel
Took me some years to get to something a bit more cool:-

Hi All
My first car was a 1972 Saab 96, sorry can't be bothered going into the loft to hunt Pics, I still say it was one of the most fun cars I have ever driven, mind you always do have a soft spot for your first car, don't you.
Here's a true classic for you all, my 1980 Saab 99 Turbo, bought it off my brother to replace my year old XR2 which I hated, only 200 of these weresupplied to the uk each year. I suppose it was sort of a holomogation model. Released in 1977 in 3 door form it had 147 BHP not bad for it's day & rallied by Stig, Per etc..... those were the days
Cheers

1978 1100 fiesta with 14" wheels! got it for £300 in 1991 and never cost me a penny more. Sold it for £500 8 months later!!
1981 MG metro - biggest pile of sh1te, sold it after three weeks.
1987 XR2, then the tuning bug got me - 15" wheels, Koni suspension, cams, headwork, big brakes. It flew and was great fun
1990 RS turbo, got it from a salvage yard with Konis and 190bhp. Also great fun. It had a dent in every panel so it looked a right heap, but it went well.
1990 Corolla GTi, cracking engine and chassis but needed bigger wheels and stiffer suspension.
1991 Nissan 200SX - First RWD experience, and boy was it good. I did intend to keep this until the offer of an Impreza came up
1994 UK Impreza. - Say no more. Would like a newer one but I've spent far too much money on it so I'm going to keep it until I win the lottery! Then strip it bare and use at as a rally car! And runaround in the Noble M12!!

In 1993 I picked up a silver Lancia Delta 1500 for £350.
Lasted 1.5 years before it was nicked.
Moved on to a MY99 - the only thing in common was the rally pedigree and the colour!!!!

My first car, is still the Golf VR6 Highline, i actually learnt to drive in the beast !!
Still it seem's slow comming over from 2 wheels, I had my first blat in a scooby a P1 from our pal's at Cheam Motors and yeah.... that's more like it.
Still the Golf gets slated alot but i like and it's more than quick enough compared to anything other than a Scoob / Evo or a Porka (you got the idea), sometimes it's good to be the underdog.........Other times it's just emabaressing listening to the boxer drone getting ever more distant !!
Scooby for '02, Have a bloody good holiday all, and i'll ctach you all soon enough !!

The second Bluebird met an unfortunate end, sideways into a forest. Oops. Lost it on a country road in the wet on pine needles. Still the 3rd and final Bluebird was an improvement. After that, I had two Primera (a shortlived L) and a SRi, before progressing onto Scoobs

Mine was a 1978 Escort 1.3 which i could drive like a mad man without causing any damage, lost loads of faster cars on roads i knew, ah those were the days, car cost £200 and had it been welded more times than michael jacksons face and was an absolute belter, for some reason i swapped it for a Mk2 capri 1.6 auto (prob cos it was a 1.6)

Get yer hair out!!!!!!!!!!!!
Car was an absolute beast! Was going to keep it as a trackday car but ended up swapping it for a pokemon card!
Followed it up with:
Fiesta 1.6sport, Escort series1 RS turbo, Fiesta RS turbo, Escort RS2000 16v, and now my molested MY00 UK Scoob.
Will never be able to beat the performance and handling of my 'poof blue' 1.1L fiesta though!!

First car was at 19 and an A reg 1.1 Renault 5 GTL (old shape) used to rev the crap out of it and it still carried on Just a shame it rolled like a git on corners Vowed that my next car would not roll at all so......
Then got and F reg 205 1.9GTi - loved that car and still miss it just went and handled superbly
That was written off care of a girl in a corsa not looking at traffic lights
Replaced with 306 2.0 GTi-6, was the natural step on from the 205, went just as well, if not better, and handled superbly and loved it - cracking car (still lacked something from the 205 though) and then replaced that in march this year with a MY99 Scoob turbo

don't have a pic ,but my 1st car was a hand painted black renault5 GTL (A reg)this was complimented by my cosmetic touch of hand painted bumpers (in white).the interior was orange,it was like driving around inside a liquorice allsort.Oh the shame of it I then upgraded to a rustic orange fiat strada all the way to my present scoob which i have decided not to cosmetically hand paint....can you beat that????????
