Have a look at ex-rental, they are usually well maintained and get sold off at half price at the end of the season, granted most will have gone by now as the new season will start soon, but there are still a few about.

Dawes Watoga Mountain Bike Ex-Hire - £199.99 - Rutland Cycling

Have a look at Singletrack Singletrack - Classifieds

Might pick up a bargain, or if you have a bit of time, you could build one up from parts.

So............have all you posters who deride XTR actually used any? If so, what? And what put you off it? (No, "someone else told me........." answers, please )

I've used LX, XT and XTR.

XTR has by far the best seals, so I don't understand the comment re: mud.

It also works better once set up, (the others need setting up, too), IMHO, and is lighter. What else do you want?

Oh well, each to his own.

XT components are fine, the weight gain / price trade off for XTR isn't worth it IMHO - although halfway up a mountain, exhausted the last thing on my mind is if I had shelled out a few extra notes things might be a bit lighter...

XT dual control brake/shifters are the best thing since sliced bread though

XTR better than XT. Lasts much longer for me and I ride several times a week.
SRAM is good, but if its downhill and or muddy then Saint isnt a bad choice

I've found XT is by far the best compromise re longevity, price, quality, weight and reliability. XTR cables with XT kit has been my choice for some time now

Aye, the good old Lothians mud-paste at this time of year. Can be run to bike through though ! And how would we manage without the Bike Co-op ?!

Andy Mc "de Balerno"

PS. My Magura Louise disc pads are shot - can you recommend a good replacement pad ?

My understanding is that in a bid to save weight, things are made thinner, machined more or made from lighter alloys...

It has **** all to with seals when I'm talking about a cassette that gets eroded by gritty mud

Just my opinion.... XTR overpriced for the length of time it lasts. If it was 10% more expensive than XT then possibly, but not at it's current prices.

Default Another vote for EBC

For 250 notes, you can't much worse than this bike

www.edinburgh-bicycle.co.uk

Free delivery to UK mainland too.

I use it for light off road and fits the bill.

Wink

However, my wife bought one of these a couple of years ago and I was pretty impressed and I'm sure it would suit your needs...
