I am not saying right or wrong however they are powerful statistics.

To make a difference you don't need to welcome anyone into your home. These are real people like you and me and would much prefer to have a little bit of land they can farm, or a business they can develop. They don't want charity, they desperately need support.

The worst for me are the AIDS pictures, a 'punishment' according to some on here, but to see children dying of AIDS, in part, because of a lack of political acceptance by Governments.
I hear your sentiments, fella.. very laudable they are too.. but, think of something, just for a second or two.. how big is your 'Carbon footprint'?
That is of greater importance to the long term future of this planet that we are steadily raping, these pics no matter how gruesome they seem to the masss , will sooner or later be the norm even in so called richer developed countries.. so think on..turn your PC off

and stop coming out with such inane drivel !!

Going to get a windmill in the back garden to be generator positive so that helps the bills

However I remain unconvinced that global warming is a man made effect - the evidence is not compelling.

I do think the earth is warming up - but there ain't much we can do about it.

Inane drivel - where?

We are, by pure nature betwixt two Ice Ages.. but what we are doing is exacerbating the problem in so much as by burning fossil fuels *instead of allowing Bubba to collect them all * we are rapidly increasing the natural occuring carbon emissions to the point of saturation, thereby decreasing the time in between said Ice Ages ... (drivel by the way that we should 'feel' for these people .. admittedly its a horrible thing , but Charity my dear Sir, begins at home )

Sentimental liberal claptrap

It would merely be more money to be diverted into the coffers of the ruling tribes enabling them to buy more guns to fight more wars

Look at Ethiopia, there are still people dying of poverty and starvation there, that's not stopping their government financing the war in Sudan/Darfur on a massive scale though is it

Tribal Witch Doctors are at the root of that one The men are going to them looking for a cure, and the 'doctors' tell them that the only way to cure it is to have sex with a virgin So what do they do? They go out and rape a child

The point of the 1% is merely an economic rather than political observation. Neither good, nor bad, just is. I make the comment as it provides an interesting perspective on the economic disparity. But there again you are not one of the 340 million people in India, for example, who will live their lives below the calorific poverty line. But hey that's just sentimental claptrap - until you meet these people. They are not suffering at the hands of tribal warlords. They are suffering local economic problems and local economic exploitation - cycles that can be easily broken with pocket change investment through micro-economic NGOs. I have seen it work very successfully.

Regading AIDS your comments are absolutely true - but to suggest they are the sole source of the problem is fatuous.

Although I suppose using your specious argument we can just turn our backs.

However if we are not part of the solution then we are part of the problem.

You are clearly trying to make a point - but I guess since you have no idea what I do in my life - I have no idea what that point is?

I didn't say they were the sole source of the problem. African tribal culture is at the root of the problem, and no amount of intervention from well-meaning westerners (or self interested ones - see CIA) is going to change that

I know it sounds racist, and I don't mean it to be, but I do believe that Africans as a race are incapable of running a stable democatic society.

What the **** you bleating on about now Robin, you pathetic excuse for a human being?

Pretending bad things don't happen in this world doesn't stop them happening.

Blaming "socialists" for either the events portrayed or publishing the photographs just shows how utterly ignorant you really are.

Do the harsh realities of what mankind really is escape you?

And as for sentimental claptrap...sigh...

Stunning images, nothing sentimental about it. Just one photographers work in capturing a lot of what we in the UK, thankfully, don't have to endure on a daily basis.

Show me where I said either the site or the photographs were sentimental claptrap

I think you'll find you can't. My opinion I expressed was directed to a specific comment in one of Rannoch's posts. Oh it was the comment I quoted, funnily enough

the western world donate billions to these countries and all the rulers do is pocket it for there personel aeroplanes and mansions and let the rest starve.

if i was in power i wouldnt donate a penny until they used the money properly and would sort out the homeless, old and starving in this country

Sadly, and criminally in my view, the catholic church tells the, that not only do condoms not work, they spread infection more. Senior African catholics have been on tv preaching this. Sickening.

Well it is, isn't it. The responses that is, not necessarily the images. The majority of the people on this thread, indeed this site, are materialists almost by definition. It's pathetic to see them dish out empty words about those pictures in order to make themselves feel good, and then do absolutely nothing to resolve it.

I think Nelson Mandela might disagree with you. It may be imperfect but things can change.

Many political observers in Southern Africa believe that the hardest and most devastating thing that Mandela has done politically was openly telling the world that his son died of AIDS.

Given what Mandela has achieved that is a pretty stunning indictment of a political rather than tribal problem.

As I posted the reference and your comment of it being sentimental claptrap was the first post then either the photographs are sentimental claptrap or maybe I could be guilty of your accusation - but you have no idea what I do financially, temporally or politically to take action.

To take action does not mean you have to live in a cardboard box and wear sackcloth and ashes. One of the most challenging areas of life in the western world is balancing wealth with contribution.

Please don't judge others in the world by your perspective of it.

Personally I believe it's to early to tell which way South Africa will go. But given that violent crime is spiralling, and the numbers of homeless & poverty stricken are increasing, I don't think the future is bright unfortunately.

Far cleverer and better informed people than me are saying already that if you want to see the future of South Africa, look at the present of Zimbabwe

What rubbish, that's what they've tried to do and it always fails. It doesn't treat the cause. It's a temporary fix that means they'll eat for a year but then the famines and disease will return.

The underlying causes need to be fixed and these never will because of human nature.

As I said earlier, it will never happen. You can't change opinions or cultures overnight, or even across generations.
