The speed limit on that road is a joke though. Not long ago it was NSL and was reduced, not due to accidents etc but due to enviromentalists.
Inappropriate speed, or just being an idiot, was a factor, but that road is easily navigable at speeds in excess of the limit (well assumming you slow for the corners!)

He may well have hit a tree at 70, just not necessarily head-on. Or the tree may be a small one that slowed him down a bit or he could have hit the side of the car at 70, span, slid, hit another tree or 10 then came to a halt. The point being he didn't go from 70-0. prob 70-40-30-20-0. Clearly if he hit a reasonable tree at 70 dead on (i.e. 70-0) then he'd be history.

I got the impression he effectively had no insurance as he was driving it on the insurance for another car. My understanding was that he left the scene to get a friend to help recover it. When they got back the Police were there, and they were just pleased that they could stop looking for a body!
They may even have been on route to the training site which is just down the road from where this accident occured.
