Quite agree astraboy .

Trouble is most people confuse roadholding with handling - 2 different things - the roadholding on a std Mk2 RS2000 is not high compared to modern cars ...not even as high as a Mk1 Golf 1800 Gti. The handling however is very adjustable and predictable. As a fun car a Mk2 RS would tick a lot of boxes for me - it is not however a lightweight purpose built 2-seater sports car - it's a sports saloon

Live leaf(coil) sprung rear axle
Mcpherson strut front suspension
Disc braked front
Drum(disc) braked rear

The difference is in the details, not the fundamentals

Wouldn't surprise me, his brother's cost something close to that

At the end of the day though, it was still a nearly 30 year old, two litre, naturally aspirated, live axled, rear wheel drive car, that kicked the ***** of an entry list full of state of the art 4WD Turbo machinery

Very different cars in my opinion which makes the question difficult to answer.

To me Mk2 escorts were great fun cars, I have vivid memories of sliding round wet roundabouts and one way systems with a huge grin on my face. However away from the sideways action (which would be dificult to do in todays traffic) there is not much to them other than the kudos of the RS badge.

The elise is a fantastic little package which brings a huge grin to your face whenever you drive it, to me an S1 is the perfect 2nd car and I would have another one like a shot if I could afford the true costs of running a 2nd car.

Have you seen the prices for a good GP4 Escort nowadays

A guy I work with is negotiating a deal the now for a fully preped GP4 with a RS1800 log book ; price £18,500 WITHOUT Engine or Box !!!!!

Heard of a ready to go one in Ireland @ £45K

I've heard quite a few bad words said about that Days of Grace place on a certain Mk2 RS message board - to be honest you're probably better buying privately off an enthusiast/known car.

With regards to Alistair McRae's car - is it not powered by a 2.0 Nissan lump (Sr20det or whatever it is..)?

Speaking from owning a few Mk2's recently, and as has been said already, if you are wanting a genuinely fun, simple car with predictable handling then you cant get much better than a Mk2 (plus they look ace!) - but for road holding thrills, I'd go for the Elise.
