Another question. Is a Land Rover such a good vehicle for towing anyway? Just because they're heavy and have 4wd, doesn't mean they're good for the job.
I agree with KF (ack! ), it's his car and his responsibility for being fit to drive it. He must have known he had to deliver the other car in the morning, so why stay up all night and get no sleep? I feel sorry for him (who would want ten deaths on their conscience?), but if it was proven that he fell asleep at the wheel, then he deserves to be punished.

I wouldnt like to be renewing his insurance!
Have you any claims, Sir?
Yes, just the one!
What was the cost of the damage, Sir?
I dont rightly know, but £20million seems to ring a bell!
Before I get fried, I am NOT making light of the situation - If he drove while unfit, by whatever reason, he has to be punished.

On the towing subject the majority now agree that dipping the clutch and not touching the brakes is the best way to settle a snake. You would be hard pushed to "power" out of a snake in a LWB deisel Land Rover with a 2 tonne trailer on anyway.
A big 4x4 is not an ideal towing vehicle when things start to go wrong, a high centre of gravity and long suspension travel makes them very unstable in a snake situation.
A very large, heavy, powerfull car would probably be a more stable tow vehicle but there are very few cars that would comfortably handle the tow weights and more so the nose weights of a big industrial trailers or car transporters, a V12 S class would probably get stuck too often as well.
I agree that he should not have been driving if he wasn't in a fit state to drive but can't see how they can tell the unit wasn't snaking on the tarmac unless he was on the grass a while before he went down the banking.

IMHO the guy needs to do time. He drove while unfit to do so but the outcome was well a little unusual. He is a victim of bad luck for causing that much damage. It's a bit of a million to one shot.
Would we have even known about this if he had killed 1 person in a 'normal' falling asleep at the wheel?
