Now you've got me started...... ......I cant understand why people see the need to listen to RnB/Hip-Hop/House with the bass at obscene volumes so every panel in the car rattles whilst they are in traffic?

Is it because the driver wants everyone else to hear how urban they are, how much bass they've got, and how bad they are?

Whats the point? Do you see people playing Led Zeppelin or Vivaldi that loud whilst in a traffic jam?

I used to do it in my XR2 back in 94. I had an Alpine kit & bass tube, and I used to listen to Jungle very loud with the bass turned way up so the insides of the car rattled and all the light clusters shook. But back then I was 18, loved Jungle and wanted to be bad ***.

Now I'm older I dont care about broadcasting my urban music knowledge or badness, and tend to listen to music at a reasonable level, whatever the music is.

Yeesh Im getting old, what a rant!

bad *** was a very good jungle track back in those days too

Yes, I do prefer listening to R&B, Hip-Hop and Rap, but I don't have a sound system in my car, just uprated door speakers - OE are completely ****e! I don't wind my windows down so everyone can hear it either!

I thought you were implying that the above music styles are 'Chav'.

basicly what you are all saying is keep them standard and stop giving the boy racer impression. If this is correct i agree fully the cars draw enough attention to themselves without adding to them, but the zennon lights look amazing, and improve your vision at night. Forget the kiddy look and give the car the creditability they deserve Mine is a standard 03 prodrive in blue and looks fabulous.

Here's a few pointers, doesn't strictly apply to Subarus, it can apply to any car which has similar mods:

Any backbox that exits at an angle and/or larger than 2.5" in diameter (unless it has a 3" system from the downpipe back).

STi wing, when it isn't an STi. Or any other non-factory wing

19" wheels (on Classics). They don't fit properly and screw up the handling - vanity=chav

Decals/stickers - tasteless tat

Sun screens - as above

Atmospheric Dump valve. Leave the factory original alone. Pure waste of money

(F)lamer kits

Lexus lights

Badly/illegally spaced number plate trying to make some word that remotely resembles Scooby, scoob Suby Subaru etc.

Or any other plate that is spaced or uses fonts that doesn't conform to the plate regs.

Front Splitters that make it impossible to traverse speed humps at a sensible speed or even put the car on a ramp to service

Ultra-stiff Coilover suspension for road use - do you like chipping your teeth for a hobby? Makes the car so jiggly that it handles worse

Defi guages galour. Only need two extra guages - and that's for track use. Plus go on be different, don't buy the exact same guage that every other RB wannabe buys

The need to conatntly warm up and warm down on every drive. FFS just drive it!

10w-60 oil in a standard car used under normal road conditions - thick gloop has gotta make it last longer

Turbo timers: here's a idea: drive like miss daisy for the last mile of your journey. Job done. And it won't invalidate your car's thatcham Cat1/2 rated alarm.

Anyone who fits a Clifford alarm "because its a Clifford" barring having the stupidest multi-tone siren ever invented by an alarm company, they have been the most overrated alarm since their inception. Their only worthy forte is blackjax, even though that is flawed and a royal pain in the ****.

Subwoofers that make the boot useless (for the record I have two 10" kicker KS80s ....but they are so small I still have plenty of room to fill the boot with junk). Upgrading stock system is ok, because its rubbish, just don't overdo it: your name is not Mad Mike from pimp my ride

Optimax (or VPower). Lets face - it makes me car go faster - innit (280ps imports, 22bs, P1s and PPP cars excused ).

Anyone who pushes their stock engine BHP past 350bhp who cannot afford to rebuild it, or the gearbox when it eventually wears out (more bhp = less life). If you can't afford the consequences, then don't do it.

If there is anything made by Ripspeed on your car: guess what? Chav!

Not to mention the usual stuff taken off the owners old Nova: Neons, strobes, LED washers, fancy wiper blades etc.

Now, lets look at the owner:

Do you have a Scooter CD, Or a Hard core Trance megamix CD, or anything that sound liek a Billy Joel LP played at 45rpm ?

Are you white, but dig R&B? Your most definetly are.

Does your girlfriend still wear school uniform (not including "role play" )?

Do you brag about your car's top speed and take pictures of the speedo whilst driving?

Are you one of those that says your cars "wastes" or "p**ses over" Beamers, Porsches, Skylines, Supras etc. or any other car that you happen to mention, either based on a breif encounter or last nights wet dream, or from spending hours on the toilet looking in the back pages of EVO using a guestimate of your modded car's BHP as a benchmark?

Do you drive less than 10ft behind the bumper of the following car. Making it tighter if you fancy your chances against the car infront?

Do you wear white Reekbok Classics?

Do you wear a baseball cap of any description? Bonus points if its slightly off centre.

Tracky bottoms? Socks tuck under or pulled over?

Favourite beer? Stella? Oh dear.

I could write a book

its good to hear that people with Subarus dont fall into the same league as those in their daddies Fords, and if u think logically about it, how can these boy racers/chavs afford the bl**dy insurance.
Seeing as all the boy racers i know are sat at college or trainee machanics.

Utter rubbish IMO all this chav nonsense.

Made up by papers like the Daily Mail by stuck up middle classes.

All cars can be so called 'chav' IMO.

Me too. Back then it was "pikey", "townie", "raver", "pot-head", even....."perpetrator".

Whatever, this all amounts to bad taste, which in the end is all down to individual tastes and opinion. So no surprise people are arguing about taste and opinion on this thread because both are personal viewpoints

Shark man = Flame suit....

Here's a few pointers, doesn't strictly apply to Subarus, it can apply to any car which has similar mods:

Any backbox that exits at an angle and/or larger than 2.5" - How about a HKS performance exhaust with back-pressure chamber?

STi wing, when it isn't an STi - If the car outperforms and STi then why not?

19" wheels (on Classics). They don't fit properly and screw up the handling - vanity - 18's are ok then?

Decals/stickers - Why not when insurance companies don't mind them because it makes the car stick out more?

Sun screens - because it may be sunny......

Atmospheric Dump valve. Leave the factory original alone. Pure waste of money - You argue with perfomance mods?

(F)lamer kits - Keeps you warm

Lexus lights - Look better than standard

Badly/illegally spaced number plate trying to make some word that remotely resembles Scooby, scoob Suby Subaru etc - So they are more personalised

Or any other plate that is spaced or uses fonts that doesn't conform to the plate regs - Sorry officer.....

Front Splitters that make it impossible to traverse speed humps at a sensible speed or even put the car on a ramp to service - Individual taste on the looks and handling

Ultra-stiff Coilover suspension for road use - do you like chipping your teeth for a hobby? Makes the car so jiggly that it handles worse - if it didn't benefit then why do they do it?

Defi guages galour. Only need two extra guages - and that's for track use. Plus go on be different, don't buy the exact same guage that every other RB wannabe buys - some people actually care about their engines

The need to conatntly warm up and warm down on every drive. FFS just drive it! - you don't like your car obviously

10w-60 oil in a standard car used under normal road conditions - thick gloop has gotta make it last longer - Most people don't buy a scoob to not exceed 4k

Turbo timers: here's a idea: drive like miss daisy for the last mile of your journey. Job done. And it won't invalidate your car's thatcham Cat1/2 rated alarm - can't fault you there.....never seen the point in them

Anyone who fits a Clifford alarm "because its a Clifford" barring having the stupidest multi-tone siren ever invented by an alarm company, they have been the most overrated alarm since their inception. Their only worthy forte is blackjax, even though that is flawed and a royal pain in the **** - security is never a bad thing

Subwoofers that make the boot useless (for the record I have two 10" kicker KS80s ....but they are so small I still have plenty of room to fill the boot with junk). Upgrading stock system is ok, because its rubbish, just don't overdo it: your name is not Mad Mike from pimp my ride - Never turned a song you liked up loud?

Optimax (or VPower). Lets face - it makes me car go faster - innit (280ps imports, 22bs, P1s and PPP cars excused ). when you get a fast car, you'll understand

Anyone who pushes their stock engine BHP past 350bhp who cannot afford to rebuild it, or the gearbox when it eventually wears out (more bhp = less life). If you can't afford the consequences, then don't do it - scared are you? or missus won't let you?

If there is anything made by Ripspeed on your car: guess what? Chav! + Ripspeed? do you read maxpower and keep the free-bees?

Not to mention the usual stuff taken off the owners old Nova: Neons, strobes, LED washers, fancy wiper blades etc + Can't fault you there

Any performance car that becomes "accessible" gets the Chav treatment.

Old BMW M3s, Civic Type Rs, etc and the Scoob is now easily purchasable for £5k or even less now.

Even my old R32 is starting to be bought by Chavs. A shame.

Its odd because I wouldnt like to own a chav'd car, however I quite like seeing tatty old performance cars on the road, in any shape.

Its a bit like readers wives or high street honey's - for some reason I like them, tatty old things that go like a rocket, dont need to be pampered and have some experience.

Im all for that.

(disclaimer - my car is 100% standard - my wife is no readers wife)

Imprezas or their owners only qualify as chav if they meet multiple requirements not just one or two. For example people are scared to wear a baseball cap or track pants these days in case they are viewed as a chav. People train in suits more and more now. Besides you have to wear the baseball cap tilted up so you can see your fringe/forehead or have it backwards or slanted just of center like idiots like Puff daddy or 50 cent.

I have always been baffled by the following though,

Carbon or BLACK bonets
After market Lexus clusters
Undercar NEONS
Rear lense convertors
Sun stips with logo

I mean why put some horrbile Subaru sun stip or Mcdonalds or whatever on your car. Stickers of any kind look crap, even GB ones. Shame that people even do it on the new age ones. The same applies to the black bonet, it just makes the car look odd and all because some craze a one point led them to believe it look "Cool". No it looks ****, thats the reality....

However regardless of the above comments the CLASSIC is seen by most as the Chav mobile now and i certainly would not ever get one unless it was a 2-door like the Type R or P1 etc. Not because of what people think but They're just too common and all look the same.

taking everything into account is my car a chav car?.

its nearly 14 years old, i am 26.
it has no atmospheric dump valve, no neons or lexus lights.

only mods are an sti5 spoiler, new suspension and an uprated ecu and decat. only used at weekends and the odd evening maybe.
has a pretty much standard stereo other than the alpine mp3 player.

not bad for a 14 year old wrx with 105k on the clock.

just for reference i dont cruise round town, i either go to track days or take it for a proper drive somewhere.

scuse the pic as it makes it look smaller at the back for some reason.
