Can you be too young to drive a Turbo Scoob?

Once you get to 22-23, or have had your licence 4-5 years, you have the experience of other road users, but you then need the maturity to be able to drive a fast car sensibly.
This is why a lot of insurers (like myself) will only insure younger drivers if they have experience on performance cars. They need to have proved they aren't going to drive like an idiot.

And why would they have to pay more insurance?

because young boy racers are one of the reason's why we have high insurance cost's and yea there are 30-50 yrs old muppets on the road who are just as bad but its mostly young driver's that are the worst if thats the case bout age then why do they have restrictions on motorbike' im 35 and i stilll had to do my cbt and do my bike test?? so by rights my 14yrs driving exsperiance should cover me for a bike????

Sorry, FIRST or SECOND ten pints?
On a more down to earth note, a gradual increase in bhp is no harm for no-one!
Did "pro" Karting for a couple of years before I got my driver's. Then I started with a modest 1.4 (98) Golf IV and from there I worked on upwards. No regrets and can only thanks to family and friends.
Even my friends which went ahead with a career in racing keep it "real" with the road cars.
I can only say that parents play a big role in the driving education of the person in question.
Like I said in another post; 240 Km/h in the Scooby, and 275 Km/h in the Volvo 850 T5........... both on the track.
Thanks

The danger of inexperience is that you don't realise how you are until maybe 3 or 4 years later.
I don't think it's a problem that can be solved in my opinion. I think its a case of young people learning over time, sometimes, unfortunately the hard way. I know people who'll roll a milk van given half the chance, and i cannot see a way of it changing. It doesn't have to be a good car to be a deadly car.

so by rights my 14yrs driving exsperiance should cover me for a bike????Yesterday 23:25
Riding a bike is much more dangerous then driving a car.......(though the actual practical of 'riding' I find much easier)
Youll be a better driver for riding a motorbike though...

Of course not, I can only hope I, and others never have to experience that situation. It's not something you just brush off.
Someone gets hit in the dark - Ban driving at night
Someone gets hit in the wet - Ban driving in the rain
Someone gets trampled by a horse - Ban horse riding
Someone gets falls while climbing - Ban it
Hit by a bus - Ban them
I'll say exactly the same again, I really can only hope none of us are involved in a trajic accident through someones moment of stupidity or just general stupidity. I'm sure as damnit not willing to live in a cotton wool box to avoid such a situation, and I'm also sure that it will happen by at least by proxy to someone I know/you know.
Why should I be forced into this situation, because you don't like it. If you don't like it don't leave the house. If we banned cars all together no one would ever be killed by a drunk driver of any age.

Gentlemen,
Driving ability has nothing to do with why a lot of young men crash, it's because they're driving with their bo##ocks and not their brains.
I'm 32, started driving a campervan in which I drove like an idiot all the time (albeit slowly) and had many near misses,
My first big prang was in a transit and was caused by inexperience and inappropriate speed.
Then went through various bland cars in which I had near misses and a few prangs.
Then followed Gti's, a 200sx, a scoob and I now drive a nice sensible 330d.
I still drive like a pr##k sometimes, but looking back I realise that when I was taking most risks and thought I knew it all, I really didn't know ****!
Why do you think old buggers like me sometimes drive quite slowly(and have lower insurance premiums)? It's not just because our bladders are so weak if we do more than 35mph we'll wet ourselves. Whether you like it or not, experience and maturity counts.
If you are a young chap, with a fast car, with a young lady/mates in the car/spirited hymns on the wireless/old duffer in front of you sticking ridgidly to the speed limit(in a crappy deisel) etc... You are more likely to do something stupid than someone who has done something stupid in the past and has learned from it.
If you're doing this in a Scoob/other performance car you are invariably going to be travelling quite quickly when you do it and if you get it wrong the consequenses are more severe.
If you are 20 and the next Tiff Needell or have thousands of miles under your belt but are frustrated at having sky high insurance premiums, I'm afraid that's tough as society has to legislate for the lowest common denominator. However insurance costs alone, as we've seen last Friday, are not working.
Regards
Dave

I count my insurance premiums at having cost roughly £10.5k from 19-25 (which is how old I am now)
Having never claimed (until a couple of months ago but that had nothing to do with performance cars) that's a lot of money i've just given away because I'm in the same age range.
Anyway, pretty much every single accident I've seen has a middle aged woman involved! I think I'm subsidising them.
Dave <off on a rant now, ignore me please

I definitely agree with the age restrictions. 18 yrs old you havent got the roadsense to realise how quick your travelling and how quick the car will lunge forward. Its all well and good us saying it could be ok for them to have it but we driver them reguarly enough to understand them and knoww when to switch the testosterone down a level.
I really do dispair.
One other thing I suppose is that I would have been criminalised myself at that age. I would have had a fast car regardless of the law.
I drive/drove sensibly enough, so does that make me a bad person that should have been treated accordingly?

I think that anyone under the age of 56 should not be allowed to drive a Scooby
On a more serious note, another factor to consider when driving in a Scooby regardless of your age is the amount of 'challenges' and the 'attitude' of other drivers towards your Scooby (usually drivers of German cars). If you respond to these n o b eds in a reckless manner then no mater what age you are you will endanger yourself and other road users.

i think any one is should be able to drive a scooby i got my first scooby this year when i was 19 and i havnt had amy problems i think its just down to the maturity of the driver and his attitude
I think everyone appreciates that Dan, as with everyone else who has remained accident free whilst being young and driving a Scoob.
But this chap was young, was driving a Scoob, and had a crash which resulted in one of his passengers dying.
You can't drive an HGV without a special license, how about a 200hp+ license?

cant put age limits on different cars because there wont be a fair way! cant go off bhp cos what about big comfy oil burners that have 200bhp+ but are slow and there for comfort, cant say engine size cos again its not fair that young drivers would have to poss drive 100miles on the motorway everyday in a 1.2!!!!
imo crashes happen and its just tough, saying you will be going quicker in a scoob is stupid cos it will also stop quicker, grip and handle better so will give you better chance of avoiding a crash therefore equalling out the added speed!
everyone that owns a scoob or other high performance car is going to brake the law and drive at higher speeds and go too fast round bends etc etc, most will get away with it but unfortunatly some wont!
age has no relevence what so ever really, its experiance in a given type of car! I remember taking my dads supra up the road when i was only 17, i thought it would be fun to put my foot down and see what all that power felt like, i did and i shat myself!!!!! only got to about 50mph to! that then gave me the respect for the speeds that performance cars have! I got my first scoob when i was 20 and before that i had a 300ZX TT and a GTO, because i had respect for what the cars were capable of (touch wood) i was and have been ok since!

Problem is alot of people on here are over 30 so their opinions are different to under 30s.
Some 40yo's old you get are ****** becuase they try to be the kiddy behind the wheel.
Yet some 20yo's are fantastic drivers.

Only one answer for this question.
Introduce some kind of advanced driving test that will then allow people to progress to more powerfull cars regardless of age.
u can be a ***** in a car at 50 not just 18 its not an age thing its attitude and blind ignorance to your own driving ability we all think we are better than we are, a session with a professional driver will show you have more flaws in your driving than a bad paint job.
So further instruction and a test would be a start.
your never to young to drive a fast car its how mature you are when you drive it.

I have come to one of many conclusions on this, it all depends on the individual.
Anthony
i think it all comes down to the individual. I have been really lucky in my life with cars. I've yet to ever have an accident and i have driven and ridden some of the fastest vehicles out there. I learned to drive when i was 14. My dad was a racing driver when he was younger and tought me most of what i know as well as having a load of experience go karting etc. I have also been trained by an advanced driving instructer as well as doing some track days. In regards to motorbikes. I was riding an r1 (03) model when i was 19 although i had ridden a gsxr 600 and an rs250 before that. I never came off any off the bikes and i definatly used them to their potential when it was safe to do it. I came accross lots of older people at the time that claimed i was too young to ride these bikes and often when i went out riding i was more under the impression that a lot of these older people couldn't control the bikes at all well and were dangerous.. yet they were still happy to criticise any young person on them. I honestly believe i have a reasonably mature attitude towards driving. Ive had a 350bhp impreza for the last year and never had any accidents in it although i have to admit im far from being an angel in it!! I've even now moved on from impreza's now to a slower car because i don;t see the point in owning one at the moment because the running costs aren't practicle for me so ive got a diesel bmw now. I think age really is often irrelevant in realtion to driving. It really comes down to the individual. You get more young reckless drivers that try to drive above their abilities but you also get a lot of older people doing exactly the same. It all comes down to the attitude of the individual, the experience they have and the ability they have at controlling vehicles.
Just my 2 pence worth. I'm 29 and have worked my *** off to buy my Evo 6...
It's just wrong altogether that 18,19 yr olds etc are driving around in Scoobs and Evo's... where the hell do they get that kind of money, either dealing, crime-funded or spoiled daddy's boys. I know this will upset a few people but there are some of us out here who WORK for our toys, and it de-values these awesome cars when some tosser is doing donuts in MaccyD's carpark in a car that he hasnt earned... and yes I'm bitter because I nearly had my Evo taken out by a **** in an Evo 6 doing powerslides in a packed carpark

If i was to take a questionaire saying "whats your most answered question", it would be "FFS How much is your insurance.. etc." but that applies to all the cars I have had, not just this subaru.
I started off with a 206 1.4, after a month, I bought a saxo vtr, after 2 months, I bought an MG ZR 160, after 2 months of that, and 1 month of driving a 2 litre £150 RWD sierra for some RWD Experiance, I bought a twin turbo supra mk4,(I am also not naive enough to think "LOL COZ I OWNED A RWD SIERRA OBVIOUSLY I CAN HANDLE A TURBO SUPRA" ) beleive it or not, I had one of these at 17, and was fully insured, fully comp, for a SILLY amount of money, but I worked 3 days a week to just pay for the insurance while I was still at 6th form.
I took it steady all the time in this car, your license can be gone in seconds before 2 years of driving is up! I thought of this car as my one time possession, if I lost it, that would be it, gone, all my hard earned cash, down the pan, straight away, and maybe my life. It wasnt worth the risk. Im not saying I didnt put my foot down every now and then, but every driver does, I would be lieing if I said I didnt, but I took it steady and never used the cars full potential.
After owning that supra, and 40k miles of driving (i had to travel a 45 miles round trip to 6th form daily, and also the GF lived a 50 mile round trip away, because I moved away from my home town, hence a lot of miles) I was now 18, and working full time, and earning a lot of money I didnt need, and my parents didnt need anymore from me, so I decided that rather than spend it on ****, I would invest in a better car! I went to speak to the bank and they gave me the extra money I needed to buy my next car -My Audi TT 225!
I had this car for about 3 months, it was lovely inside and a nice car, but i just didnt "click" with it, so I decided to go for a subaru! After a long time of searcing, and owning two more cars temporarly until I found the perfect subaru(rover 620ti and a rover 220 turbo coupe sadly), I found my perfect subaru - MY03 JDM STI 8
Bought that, and now I am 2 Months off being 19, and I love it - It honestly just makes me go tingley when I look at it, and a real sense of hmm, I dont know the word, acheivement is probably not appropriate, but ownership maybe! I have worked hard for the money, and the rest I am working hard for to pay it back on time, every time, and its going well.
I have had decent cars all the time, and looked after every single one the same. Iv been bought up with cars as my dad has previously owned 3 car garages, and now owns a transporting business moving them about! He is happy for me to do what I am doing, I am doing it off my own back, and so far, not much putting anyone in danger in the process, Touch wood!
Its all down to the individual owning a subaru, if your sensible, why not? If your an idiot, then your going to crash without a doubt. But I dont like seeing posts where people saying its wrong for young people to be driving about in them, and they are all mainiacs, because, I am young, and I am not a mainiac, (mainiac driver anyway lol)

However, I think you'd agree that you are the EXCEPTION that proves the rule though! We couldn't set a precedent based on the exceptional behaviour of one good egg!

The MAJORITY of people your age cannot be trusted with a high performance car. The statistics and insurance premiums (which aren't penalising young males for nothing) speak for themselves.
There will always be a few that could be trusted and they will unfortunately suffer for the actions of others. Hard cheese, yes, absolutely! But as I've said before, there are other perks to having a bit of money when you're young and blowing it on a flash car may or may not be the right way to proceed.
