Sara, of all the things you should do, and DO NOW, is get a private MRI scan. Miles better than any x-ray. I was in a similar position recently. Just a knee should only cost £600-ish and you could prolly get it done next week. Then a private consultancy, another £100-150.

Then you'll know what the problem is, and how urgent/bad it is. His bones will be healing fast now, but if they are not properly straight... My uncle did something similar as a young lad, it's given him grief all his life and is now in a wheelchair. Sorry, don't mean to be alarmist

Secondly, get him off that bloody motorbike. I'm a dreadful hypocrite here, but just do it. Fortunately, getting a license for a superbike these days is pretty damn difficult so it shouldn't be long before you can wean him on to four wheels. Bribe him as much as necessary to get anti-lock brakes and air-bags, please!

Thirdly, if you want to give yourself a headache, complain to the NHS. But it will get you nowehere, and won't help your son

Best wishes,

Richard.

If you get a consultation privately, the consultant may be able to fast track an MRI scan on the NHS. He can do this because of the severity of the injury, so you may not have to pay for the scan.

Sara, leave the NHS plans in place for the MRI scan, but also make a private booking. Phone tomorrow and I bet he'll be scanned next week.

You can't rely on the NHS. I was due an op earlier this autumn, which then became March 07. Then I got a cancellation date for today, which was swiftly cancelled on Monday. I'd already bought me jim-jams, too! I'm now due to go in January 07, but I'll believe it only after it's done.

Sorry to say this again, but if you rely on the NHS, he could be disabled for life. A £600 MRI scan now will clarify your son's condition and needs.

Richard.

I won't bore you with the details, but the system doesn't work like that. Get a fooking private MRI scan now, and worry about the rest accordingly.

If you insist on going through the NHS, EVERYTHING must start with your GP.

Err yes it does, I have been through it like that. Granted things may have changed since I had it done, but I got a private consultation through the GP for which I paid. The consultant manged to get me an MRI scan within a couple of weeks on the NHS. This was for a head injury a few years back.

thanks donna

i forgot about this...................when we went back to the hospital 2 days after the accident and said his jaw was in a lot of pain we was sent to a different hospital for the xray. we then had to return straight back to the first hospital to get the result. it was about 4.30pm by the time the xray arrived. all these medical people swooped around my son prodding and poking his jaw. they kept asking him if what they were doing was hurting, then the doctors went off and came back and started counting his teeth over and over before the finally realized the xray wasn't my sons, it didn't have a name on. in the end the other hospital xray department had closed so it couldn't be sent till the morning

i wasn't laughing at the time though

Lax, no other word for it!!

Why on earth didn't they have his name on it and why send you to different hospitals?

OK, maybe the first one didn't have the equipment or whatever to do the x-ray, but why send you back to get the result rather than get it from the hospital it was taken at?

From what I have seen, most x-rays are on computer now, rather than film, so no real reason why they couldn't have done it or took so long over it!

Bottom line with the NHS is that if you are 'critical' and could die unless urgent action is taken, they are absolutely brilliant. No question.

But if your life is not in immediate danger, they just let you hang around until:
a) you learn to live with it
b) pay to go private
c) are prepared to wait until they can find a slot that suits them (not you)

Richard

PS Edited to add, the difference between Private and NHS care is, when you pay to go Private, they want you to come back next time you're in trouble. The NHS does not.

Just for info, All Max-Fac units I work with don't have digital radiography and work with traditional films.

Some are *still* lacking the funding others have then Probably another post code lottery thing!

Either way, I still don't understand why the x-ray had to be done in one hospital, but the results given in another

A note for SS's son.
I've had about 7 or 8 accidents and come away without a scratch... Why?
Because my transport had four wheels and four doors.
Forget the motorbike.. Too many feejits on the road today and the standards have dropped...

Test driving a car late this afternoon in the dark (40 grands worth of unregistered motor by the way) I came up to a roundabout and could see headlights coming from my LEFT.. I came onto the roundabout cautiously...
Had I not there would have been two written of cars and possibly injured occupants, this geezer and his wide eyed girl passenger didn't even think to slow down at the roundabout. If you were on a bike and not been as aware as a more experienced person would have... you be dead for sure.
As I say, too many fcukwits on the roads these days..

You could try and get the motorists insurance to pay for the MRI scan.

Ligament damage is in some ways worse than broken bones, which heal fairly easily. As others here have said ligaments take ages to heal, if at all. Is the ligament just damaged or is it ruptured? If it is ruptured the only satisfactory solution is to have it "replaced". This is done either with some of your own ligament or with carbon fibre. However I don't know whether the NHS will run to that. Again i suggest you pursue the motorists insurance to cover the cost, if you have to go private.

I rode bikes before I drove a car and had several offs, but nothing too serious. However it did teach me to treat all, and I mean all drivers as complete ffffing idiots. There's a saying amongst bikers.

"There are bold motorcyclists, and there are old motorcyclists, but there aren't any bold old motorcyclists"

good point on the damage factor. i dont believe my ligament was damaged. as im left footed, and it was my left knee i did, made it worse as all my power and balance sources from that leg. it never gives me any problems now, was looked after by me after i damaged it. if anything its this accident at work i had thats caused my old whiplash injury to exasperate and hurt like ****

Donna, he was sent to another hospital for the jaw xray as they has a machine just for that. it was sent via computer back to the hospital that was treating him as his doctor was there. when the fracture was seen he was sent to another hospital 50 mles away because they had a Mandible (sp) xray machine, he is now getting his jaw sorted at this hospital .the whole thing has been a sham though.
today i will get somewhere
