Apple could include a charger with the iPod, but as others have said, that would increase the cost and the packaging would have to change, plus if you already have an iPod you could end up with two chargers, and most of the time I'd doubt you'd use both of them so one would be redundant.

Looked at the 30Gb Video iPOD in Black today ...... pretty good, bargain in Currys too at £170 with discounts off the speaker/docking/charging systems.
I must admit to starting to consider it seriously, it really is a beautiful thing ..... maybe the crowd/sheep are actually right in this case??
The accessories available for the iPOD is simply staggering ........ I hate to admit it, but unless something appears to challenge it, I may be buying an iPOD!! And I will hate myself for doing so ......

One, dare I saw it, flaw with the iPod (and many other devices) is the connectivity. My iPod has its' usb>iPod connector. Why, oh why, does it not have a usb>mini-usb connection on the device like my SPV phone? I could then plug it into any mini usb cable (had from anywhere for little £'s - this prob explains it). In my case, I have my mini-usb charger left at work to charge it there when necessary and the usb>min-usb at home plugged into PC to charge it when at home (and auto update it while I'm at it)
This is not iPod specific, many phones and mp3 players etc. lack this universal connector type. Although my mate lent me his iRiver and forgot his cable but this wasn't an issue as it was a mini-usb connector standard for which I had the cable anyway.
Or, is there a iPod/mini usb adapter I can get of?
On the upside, in my previous job, many people had iPods so never a problem borrowing their cable to charge mine up during the working day if need be.

Most MP3 players/Digital Cameras use the very same USB Connection ...... it's Apple's way of getting more money as the 3rd parties need to licence the cable connection design from Apple!
I REALLY REALLY HATE Apple and all they stand for - but, it appears, that the iPOD is the best MP3 Player you can buy ............... sadly!

I agree. I bought an iPod 60GB a coupla years ago and it was the only one that had a 60GB capacity that I needed (apart form a crap 'creative' device) and it's easy to use, loads of accessories, parts and support for it etc.
I've worked with macs/apple for a few years (not anymore thank <insert deity here>) but they really got it right with the ipod. I really wanted something other than the iPod at the time, in hindsight I dunno why, just trying to be nerdy and different from the crowd, pathetic really. I really wanted to go for the iRiver at the time, but it just didn't fulfill my requirements, they didn't have 60GB+ versions, no colour screens, too many buttons etc. I came to the rational and sane conclusion and got the best mp3 player for my usage.
Sound quality is more than good enough (as it is on many players - although I do recommend using better headphones, the std iPod ones really are crap) and 99% of use is on the move, in the car etc. where top notch sound quality is NOT what you're after in the 1st place - in the 80/90s everyone had cassette walkmans after all!!! mp3 players are for portability and on the move, cds etc. are for ultimate sound quality on the home stereo, blahdy blah blah blah.

So you don't even have to pay over the odds for an Apple branded charger.

if you use , the usb port, it wont charge, but will transfer tracks..
if you plug the usb & firwire cable into the pc at the same time, it gets very confused, as it wants to send data via firewire, and the 3rd gen isnt set up for firewire transfer.... (on the pc only), and then the usb port reports errors
So you need a firewire charger from the mains. you plug the firewire end into that, and it takes care of the charging, and the usb end into the pc, for the track transferring, or the loopy way is to use firewire from the pc to charge it, then unplug the firewire cable and plug in the usb cable...
good old apple !!
i believe they resolved this on 4th & 5th gen...
thats how i got my 3rd gen for a song... it wouldnt charge (because the seller was using the usb cable to try and charge it)
