Limited Space GB on STI 8 Rear Spoilers.

Got mine friday.
Paint work looks top notch.
Shame is that it doesn't just go straight on, you have to take a drill to the spoiler!?!!? Only 2 holes ready drilled.
So am now running around spolierless as can't be arsed to put old one back on!
Not overly happy.
Anyway if you see a spoilerless WRX around the herts area it'll be me!

Yes, mine looks good too and the paintwork seems OK. However, I also had trouble fitting it and ran out of light so had to put the old one back on (which is surprisingly easy in comparison!) because the brake light wire is on the wrong side and the holes in the bootlid were fractionally too far apart for those on the spoiler. Yes, it is odd that we need to drill extra holes, but I guess that's to make sure they're in the right place for our specific car.
Has anyone got any tips on re-routing the brake light wire or better still, where I can get a plastic 'plug' to connect it to the one that was on the original wire? That way I could just plug the new wire straight in without damaging the old one in case I ever need/want to revert back.
Also, it says no bootlid drilling is required, but there is a visible gap in the middle between the lid and the spoiler. Is anyone else planning to drill extra holes? I'd rather avoid it if possible, again in case I need to revert back.
Why is nothing ever simple?

Got mine fitted today.
Took it to my bodyshop, £100 later is fitted.
Strange really as was sold as fit straight on, all holes in correct place.
Funny as holes had to be drilled.
Phoned up and was told would get a call back, how unusual I didn't get a call back.
Customer service at it's greatest!

They drilled extra holes.
Looks good but am thoroughly pissed off that it wasn't as sold.
And **** customer service.
What you used to plug holes under spoiler, the 1 and a half inch holes on the sides that is?

I fitted a DRMotorSport STI 8/9 spoiler around the middle of last year and all the holes lined up without any drilling required - maybe they've changed supplier or redesigned them.
A mate is looking to buy one but I came across your posts and wanted to check this out before an order is placed.
Can you confirm which holes didn't line up (ie front, back or both on one side), were they out by much and would the new holes be covered if refitting the original WRX spoiler?
Also was it necessary to drill holes in the middle of the boot lid to resolve the gap in the middle that WRX-Jo commented on?
cheers

Once the first negative feedback was posted here i held off purchasing in case it was more than a one off.
I did take the liberty of sending them a polite email with a link to this thread so they can see for themselves what people were saying.
I thought this would give them the opportunity to reply to any negative remarks etc and offer solutions. I also said that this negative feedback on such a respected forum could damage their reputation.
This was well over a week ago and i have not received a reply or one hasn't been posted here.
They were very quick to respond to the initial sales enquiries though. So i guess this lack of response speaks volumes concerning their after sales service. Shame!!

The drilling of extra holes was, I believe, to ensure the spoiler lined up to the holes in the bootlid. There were two already drilled, one on each side, which (more or less) lined up to those on the bootlid, then we had to mark on the spoiler where the other two holes should go, by lining it up to the holes on the bootlid, then drill these in the spoiler. It was easy enough to do and ensured an exact fit.
However, I still have a tiny gap in the middle between the bootlid and the spoiler because I haven't drilled any extra holes in the bootlid to hold it down closer. There is some sticky tape around the bottom which I will probably use once happy with the spoiler, but this probably won't be strong enough to eliminate the gap. So I'm living with it for the time being (reluctantly)...
Any additional holes in the spoiler, whether they be the small ones which are now underneath so out of sight, or the larger ones at each end of the spoiler, have not been filled - I have just left them. Unless you look up at it from below, you don't see them. I didn't quite understand what those large holes are for...
It's far from perfect, I know, but as I've said before - you get what you pay for. This was little more than a quarter of the price of the genuine Subaru article.

Sounds like these spoilers are a little different to the one I fitted the middle of last year.
From my experience - the spoilers are made of two halves - top & bottom. The 2 fairly big holes at each end give access to the screws/bolts which hold the 2 halves together. Mine came with rubber plugs to fill the holes once fitted.
So can I confirm, before my mate orders one.... Although WRX-Jo has a gap in the middle between the spoiler and boot lid the only holes which have needed to be drilled (by anyone) is in the underside of the spoiler and not the boot lid?
cheers

I have also been in touch with DRMotorSport today because I need to know what they have done to rectify this problem as I would like to buy this spoiler, the reply I got back was;
The spoilers are designed to fit the original 4 bootlid holes.
However there was a little bit of work to be done to the spoiler to get it to fit perfectly.
Basically 2 holes matched up, and to make sure the 2nd pair also matched, these were to be marked on the trial fit then 2 holes drilled.
Now after a good few hundred spoilers like this being sold, we always find someone who can get this wrong.
So this week, we've been altering the spoilers to make fitting 100% foolproof.
From now on the spoilers will have captive bolts in them that will drop through the 4 bootlid holes, then all that is required is to put 4 washers and nuts onto them and tighten.
What do you lot think of this.

That sounds alot easier to me
The problem may have been solved , Shame it's taken 4/5 Of " Our boys " To highlight the problem though

Still begs the question why they didn't respond to the emails sent by those raising the problems in the first place or those purchased the spoiler.
Or am i just being synical that they only respond to emails from potential customers ?
I have been put off by their lack of replies. So i need to be convinced that their product is back up to scratch again !!

Just received a E-Mail from DRMotorsport.
They have informed me that they are to be delivering my spoiler on Wednesday and the reason for it taking longer than first antisipated was that they have made adjustments to the fittings on it so it is now 100% full proof.

Please let us know what you think of the new "fool proof" version.
So far no pics of any bodys fitted.
I stillmay be convinced to buy if someone is actually happy !!

How would you rate the quality of finish/painting (any close up pictures would be good too)?
Do the spoilers still come with the clear brake light which illuminates red - as per the Subaru OE version?
thanks

Here's a picture of mine fitted:
Need to use silicone sealant around the holes as well, as mine has let in a bit of water with the recent rain. Thankfully not much though. Paint is OK but ovbiously not as good as the finish on the car and as you can see, the brake light is red, not clear.
I'm a bit jealous that other people are now getting the 'fool-proof' versions of this spoiler, but at least DRM are doing something about it for other customers. It'll be interesting to know how much better they are...

It turned up this morning!
The bolts were 'nearly' in the correct place, had to make a few minor adjustments to the boot lid (so much for it being 100% fool proof!) but its on and looks rather smashing!
Please excuse the p1ss poor picture quality, i would blame the camera but i know i just take kack photos!

Guys as I mentioned in a previous post my mate is still looking for an STI style rear spoiler.
Given all your experiences and ignoring the difficulty you've had with fitting are you overall happy with the end result (look/quality) once the spoilers on the car?
Would you recommend this spoiler or should he be looking elsewhere?
Was WRX-Jo the only one to have a gap between the middle of the spoiler and the boot lid and did you manage to resolve it?
MrBush do you think the modifications to make the spoiler "100% fool proof" are likely to have compromised how well it attaches to the bootlid (ie do you feel it's secure enough or is it questionable)?
Sorry for all the questions but I appreciate you comments/experiences before an order is placed.

I think going on what other people said about how difficult it was for them to fit there spoilers that i had a pretty easy time fitting mine.
The bolts as i said above were nearly in the right place (had to elongate the exsisting holes) but all in all it looks ok, fits to the boot lid ok and the quality of the finish was ok too.
Its secure too!

I assume if you only had to elongate the holes a little then the original WRX spoiler could be refitted again if necessary in the future.

I only elongated the holes on one side of the lid so that if i ever wanted to re-fit the WRX spoiler (which i can't see happening) it would fit right back in its original spot!
The bolts on the spoiler where about 2-3mm out of alignment, not too much work envolved!

So MrBush, do you also have a gap in the middle between the spoiler and the bootlid? I assume you didn't drill any extra holes in the bootlid because you wouldn't be able to put the old spoiler back on if you did...
I'm glad I didn't drill any holes in my bootlid, because I've had to (temporarily) revert back to my old spoiler. We took the new one off to make it a better (more watertight) fit, but when putting it back on, we couldn't get the tapping screws to bite, as they go straight into the fibreglass with only a small thread. So I now need to get some bigger screws. Grrr. Wish we'd never taken it off now.
I wonder whether they modified these holes/fixings at all in the 'fool-proof' version...

The 4 bolts seem to hold the spoiler in place very well, and there is also a 1/2" double sided tape around the whole edge.
Its on at the mo and doesn't seem to want to move!

Sorry - another question. Did you stick it down with the tape around the edge and did it stick all the way round with no gaps?
When I finally put mine back on (hopefully tonight), I might use this, but given my current gap, I want to make sure it will stick. Positioning it will be fun too - no chance to shuffle it after it's stuck down, eh?

The tape goes round the whole base of the spoiler but there is a small gap in the tape on both the front and back.
I found this to be quite usefull as when i cleaned the car or when it rains there is a build up of water (puddle) in the gap between the spoiler and the rear screen part of the boot lid as the boot lid itself tapers off to rear of the car and these gaps are in such a postion that the water drains off from there.
Also as said in a post above use silcone sealer in the holes in which the bolts pass through and where the wiring for the brake light passes too as this is a prime place for water ingress.
