I recognise you fella - I first started lurking here in early 2001.
I must admit they are far more geared up for cycling over here in Germany - there are some iffy roads where I use the pavement. But they have a huge amount of cycle lanes which makes it relatively safe.
I would think twice about do so much cycling in the UK just from the saftey point of view.

hi straubo,i normally cycle down to the main blantyre to cambuslang road.i can then go to newton train station under the bridge and connect to the glasgow to edinburgh cycle lane.the cycle lane takes me close to work.or i can go down past blantyre train station to the bridge over the clyde which is a short cut to uddingston main street.

Flippin' cold this morning : was -5 last night at 10pm when my wife came home, doubt it was much milder this morning. Edinburgh itself would have been maybe 0 or higher but out in the sticks the freezing fog was very nasty on unlit roads I use and combined with frozen back brake due to me stupidly washing the bike last night when I got in and leaving it in the garage overnight meant a bit of a dodgy ride in for a few miles until it unstuck !
Last commute now until Dec 31st (am driving home - car in garage here at work) so hopefully weather will have improved a bit by then.

Does the cold air hurt your throat? Mine really suffers.

Anything we can do (without looking like a welder?)

Strongly recommend this.....lets your head breathe (sort of goretex) and has a mouth protector bit

Cannondale LE Balaclava £18.99 - Leisure Lakes Bikes

Wear mine when below -3ish

PS As for your other thread, I'd recommend a hybrid instead of an MTB if you really are commuting mostly.....

I generally buy two sets of wheels - one for slicks.

When I go off road, it tends to be stuff that I don't think a hybrid could cope with.

Ta for the link

ordered a 2008 Spec Rockhopper Disk Comp (£750) for commuting, through the Cyclescheme. Went in to order it, and they had a 2007 pro (£950) for the same money.
£950 bike for ~£400, couldn't pass that up! Could keep it a year and sell it on for more than that.

Trouble is it's far too good for commuting- my Stumpy may have to go...

So.....who is still doing the daily commute then ?

Good see loads of people at my work switching over to the bike, but we'll see if they are still so keen when the good old Scottish winter faces them

SiPie - been doing one for over 5 years now!

Recently lengthened ours as I now do 3 days a week of it and Mrs Matt does 2 (she's a bit of a demon cyclist but was pregnant for a while then gave birth 9 months ago - now fully back in shape) but I try and do at least one other at the weekend. I also run about 4-5 miles off road on the "off" days (and do weights twice a week. And surf. And and and...)
Now 12.6 miles and VERY hilly with about 2.5 miles of proper off roading. It's a stunning route and I see pretty much no other cars or cyclists.

Gradually blinging the bike up - almost everything on it (2007 Stumpjumper HT) has been upgraded and lightened - I love it!

Only thing that stops us is ice - just too dangerous - we run instead.

Yep

Now that I'm NOT living 70 miles from the office, I leave the car there and cycle everywhere I can (as long as I don't need to be non-sweaty when I get somewhere). Commute this morning took an extra minute approx due to the tube strike but is generally less than 10 anyway.

Much the best way to get around London though I have also been doing a lot of walking recently which is also quite good.
