I've just seen this and first thing is you have my sympathy.

Driving into London this morning I saw a very similar car on the side of the A40 with 'For Sale' in the windows, it was just before you turn off onto the North Circular. I didn't pay it much attention so I cannot be sure, but when I saw the picture of your car it immediately reminded me of the car I saw this morning. Apologies if this is a wild goose chase.

Regards,

Robin

agree with mr greer. if that liitle ****s driven the **** off it for a few hours with no concern over the car, it may have done many miles worth pf damage and shorten the cars life in general. thats the worst thing. the devaluation of it when its been nicked and totally thrashed to death, would rather burn it and restart again imho.

good that you have it back at least but get it checked.

hey guys , yeh least i dont have to worry about where it is now .

as for the engine , thatsbeen my main concern , have been told that the insurance companies engineer will look at that , because they have to return the car in pre-theft condition , they also said they hate engine work because its so unpredicable so rarely actually fix them , more then likely if its blown it will be written off

still dont even know if there gonna pay out :/

just a horrid waiting game , but at least now scoobies been found the long old process has started

i suppose at worst...

if the car was written off say due to the engine being fooked, could you not buy the car back off the insurer for an agreed discounted sum, hopefully less than what its worth on the insurance policy.

would you then not be able to source a decent condition second hand engine (lots of sources on here ) and get somebody to pop it in. i dont know if the figures would be worth it but if you wanted to keep your car and have no issues with the engine etc?

just a thought anyways gem gems...

hi Gem, worked in the insurance industry for a few years and its a fair chance they will consider it "beyond economical repair" if they cant measure the extent of any damage. If I were you I'd presume this is the direction they'll take and start gathering your info.

If they are going to make a total loss offer you need to be able to consider if this is "reasonable" or not. Get online and into Autotraders etc and start gathering info on similar cars, to help guide them to a realistic valuation.
All receipts for work done, letters from any regular garage / mechanic you use, photos etc. You'd be surprised how many people dont have this info and the company's go straight to a standard insurence loss guide and make an offer. This way you will have something to talk to them about, and its much better if you can present this with your claim form before they ask for it. It shows you are a responsible person who's taking this seriously and not someone trying to make a quick buck.

As for buying the vehicle back, so long as they deem it still roadworthy, this wont be a problem, as they dont really need cars on their hands. I'm sure you can find out plenty about donor engines. The car looked mint in the photos, so either you are pretty handy yourself or you know people who are.
Good luck with this, I guess you only decision is whether you want it back or not. Ive got no opinion on this as its never happened to me, but I have had two of my houses burgled and after a while it does sort of dilute a bit, to the point where you dont think much about it, but you are more aware (not afraid) of things around you.

And if you can, dont sepnd too much time dwelling on the blokes that did this, otherwise they will still have some hold over you and I'm sure thats not what you want. Get on with life asap and get back to enjoying what all of us here enjoy.

Gemma,

Word of advice, if you buy the car back, make sure you change all the security on it including the locks. Dumb as these little scotes are a favourite trick is to get copy keys and fobs done as soon as they get a car then if it packs up or is seized back they can just go and get it again.

This also apply to you house locks if those keys were on the same ring when they nicked the car.

Not being paranoid before anyone says anything, had this happen to a mate.

Pleased to hear that.

Hope the insurance outcome goes your way and quickly, just stick to your guns and keep your cool. Normally the first offer is crap, just send em a load of ads of similar cars at the price you want and they normally buckle.

As for the not paying out at all, I'm presuming this is the no lock damage they had the keys scenario. You crime number and report states that the vehicle was taken without consent and under duress so use that as your stance to them. Police (not normally a big fan miself) will normally back you on this one. Log of 999 call etc available and the like!!

Good luck

mangel
