Bugeye's don't do 0-60 in 5.4 seconds in the hands of anyone other than a very skilled test driver on a strip. Furthermore nobody does 0-60 sprints in the real world. What's more likely is a run down a sliproad onto a motorway or a tussle on a dual carriageway. In both these circumstances a standard bugeye would be beaten by the new breed of hot hatches.
My S8 isn't a '***** substitute' as you suggest, what it is in fact is a cheap way of travelling long distances in extreme comfort while still being able to kick sand in the face of losers driving cars like fugly imprezas.
It's debadged as that's how I bought it, although I do have the badges sat in the little bag in the boot. I thought it more fun to leave them off.

It is annoying when someone comes on who own's another marque that costs significantly more and claims that the Impreza is slow... it is not a slow car.
My modified and remapped WRX will outpace most things, even at motorway speeds and even including the mods represents very good performance per pound spent. It is quicker than any "hot hatch" I have come accross...
Torpid was looking for a reaction, that's all and that's what he got... his work here would appear done.

He does talk a lot of nonsense, but atleast it's light hearted and sometimes (only sometimes) funny.
Sure he will surface again soon...

The long distances I drive are somewhat larger than a trip to some sort of low end dance festival for children.

It would be good if you could experience the performance of a Focus ST with a £500 remap and then get back in your car. My bet is that you'd find them very, very similar.

Dont know if this is worth anything but here goes.
Have owned several classics some modded some not, std WRX bug, and STi blob, currently own an S8 too, all good cars some better than others.
I have been on several "runs" with varied scoobs in attendance (most recent was in a 387bhp scoob and this felt really fast, however a std car(04 STi) kept with me in most circumstances (he just took more chances than me).
I was impressed with this car and the most "slow" feeling car was my WRX bug ( I put this down to being more refined/civilised than the modded cars) but even this still covered the ground quickly.
My S8 does its job well but in a different way to the scoobs (feels composed in all but the most enthusiastic driving) and the scoobs "felt faster"
So up against most "hot hatches" the scoobs can be driven to closer to the edge than most 2wd cars as the "get out of jail" aspect of 4wd allows a limited talent driver (like me) to get the most out of them.( I have a couple of 2wd cars too). IMHO.

When it goes it will have cost me the price of a set of tyres and an oil service to run for over 10K miles.

Your car should be producing, what, 330bhp and similar torque? So it would have needed to be running a good 400 bhp+ to "leave you for dust".

A good price for a good car.
Still, since you were mocking Scoobs, its worth pointing out that you could have bought a newer STi, modified it up to 350 bhp, had a faster car point to point ~ and still had enough change to go on a nice wee holiday and **** the g/f senseless for a couple of weeks !
