I had a Mercedes E-class estate leave me for dead the other week on the A16 (orA18) in Lincolnshire. He obviously knew the road far better than I did and had the mid range grunt to pull away. Probably of more importance though, he was telepathic and so knew that when he was cutting the blind corners at 80+mph that there wasn't an on coming vehicle.
At Croft last week, my French Clatter-wagon was quite happily punching above it's weight, struggling on the straights but being faster in the corners than a lot of other cars. That said, I find it a more rewarding and entertaining drive than many of my previous more powerfull and faster cars.

From a personal note, I was let down by the RCS172 that we bought for my misses.
Don't get me wrong I like R's as I once owned a R5 GTT that was like turd off a shovel.
I found the build quality a real let down more than anything. That rattle over the engine is really annoying. Some of the boys from Surreyscoobies will tell you that most of the money I wanted to spend on my car ended up on going on the Clio to repair silly little problems. Mostly the hangers on the exhaust were a pain in the butt and the amount of Saturday or sunday's i'd spend under it was becoming tiresome.
I found the car's driving position a major problem. It's fine if your below 6 foot to be honest as the seats are made for you but anything above that height then you had a problem. For a car on 16" wheels I thought it was too heavy up front.
The engine was ok but still lacked that little something for me. It was fine for short little spurts on the motorway but it wouldn't open it's legs like my old R5 GTT on the motorway as yes I did take into account it was TC and not NA. I think with some tidy mods and a map the rev's will flow a treat and the clio is a dark horse.
We ended up selling on the RCS in the end and got a Mini. If I had to get another Clio I'd maybe try a 182 Trophy. I still visit the cliosport forum from time to time and it is full of useful info like this place.
Don't get me wrong, I do like them as they have a lot of tuning potential and fun round corners. But if push came to shove I'd rather get a Mini CS.

My Revo'd PD150 is circa 190bhp, what other mods have you done to get your 130 to 197bhp?

I love subarus dont get me wrong. Top of the range sti etc are very quick. I sold my clio 172 to buy a subaru but after driving 2 bug eye wrxs I changed my mind! There is no way anyone can say a clio is slow!I drove that and thought it was dissapointing! Fair enough a clio will be slower than a P1 but someone with a remapped golf?? I bet you started racing him and he was hesitant dropping a gear to start racing! You dont need to do that with a turbo! I raced my mate in his Jabba'd golf rolling (i was sitting at 5k ish) and I pulled quite a bit. If we both just started from 3k for example he would beaten me! Anyway rant over, golfs are quick once remapped but clios are not slow! Try driving a 1.4 escort

I've had a play with one of these new clios and he wasn't slow by any stretch of the imagination. From what I saw, he'd beat quite a few scoobys with ease.
He'd be made to look slow on the strip, but were weren't on the strip and there were quite a few bends.
(my car isn't slow either, 12.4 1/4)

I owned a 182 for 18 months and definately wouldn't say their slow. Great fun in the twistys and still king of the hatchbacks in my opinion. I now own an MY94 WRX RA which is obviously in a different class performance wise . It was in the garage last week and i had an M reg fiesta 1.1 to drive .Now that is F**king slow i thought i was gonna have to get out and push going up hills . Gotta say though when i had the 182 i took a few cars by suprise especially around bends it was like a go cart. Don't think there would be much in it between a 225 bhp newage and a 182 considering weight.
