I subscribe to the "cool it down before you get there" idea. Better to drive the car a lower revs and sedately rather than stop and let it idle.
For one thing, I find oil temps peak after I've stopped giving it beans and slow down for a few minutes.
Second thing is on idle you're relying on the cooling fans to kick in and cool it. If you're driving it, this isn't likely to be required as you've got a nice cool airflow through the radiator, past the engine, turbo and through the i/c.
Third thing is noise. Sitting there on idle for a couple of minutes with the fans going on and off with a meaty burble coming out the back endears us to no-one.
Fourth thing is I'm impatient and when I get to my destination, I want to be able to turn the car off, gather my stuff and lock it.

I am never really sure how long to leave it but normally go for a drive after at around 2k revs and let it have a minute on the drive, but my engine bay always seems really hot, worse than I expected and fans normally kick in as I put the car on the drive never found this with my sport so are the turbo engines hotter in general??

I agree the best option is to drive the last few miles gently but I still have my TT set for 30 Secs just in case I have to be a bit quicker.
