Not appropriate to comment at the moment really, but the PC Health and Safety anti motor sport green brigade are circling like vultures already...

Details very sketchy, looks like he regained consciousness and was walking and talking by the time he was airlifted. Hopefully they are keeping him in as a precautionary measure since he was out for a considerable period.

280mph!!!!!
Even with a helmet, an impact to the head at much much lower speeds can kill

still get head injuries with a skid lid, its the sudden deceleration that causes the injury, stopping from 200+ with your bonce will still jar the brain,

My thoughts are with him- just watched the news update.
Have to say it doesnt sound great if airlifted staraight to a neuro unit but hopefully just precautionary.
As for wearing a helmet at 200 and wibble- they are only designed for a certain load and impact.... clearly better than not having one but not exactly a 'get out of jail free' card.
Get better soon hampster

A North Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokesman said he was unconscious when they got to the scene and a hospital spokesman described him as "critical". http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/n...re/5365676.stm

It's on the BBC news clip somebody posted earlier. They say that two of the production crew who saw the whole thing said he walked to the air ambulance - yet the ambulance service quoted that he was not conscious when they got there

Whatever, here's hoping for a full recovery. Top bloke.

'I don't know quite what happened but the parachute deployed, there was quite a lot of smoke and the car veered off to the right onto the grass. It turned over a couple of times.
'The car was upside down. The roll cage had dug in and Richard was upside down with his head down into the soil. We opened his visor and fortunately he was still breathing.
'The ambulance came across and the paramedic and his partner managed, with help from the film crew, to right the car.'
He said Hammond was placed on a stretcher board and airlifted to hospital. Last night he was in a critical condition.

Worrying that the beeb have put this up - doesn't this sort of thing usually mean bad news is expected

Let's hope not

Edited to add the wording on the news article has changed from "Critically Ill" to "Seriously Ill" so that sounds like his condition has improved
