I went with my brother and dad today to currborough on a members day unlimited runs in their cars.
for those of you who don't know my dad has a swb Dialynx quattro that makes a dyno proven 468bhp 460lbft torque.
my brother has a mitsubishi evo 7 extreme 's' based on the rs model with full 3 way ast's and track rubber approx 350bhp.
my dad's car is without doubt one of the fastest cars you will ever drive the acceleration is just insane as it weighs in at about 1170kgs but.... the turbo lag is just ridiculous, found myself planting right foot midway through corners to try and pre empt the lag so when it comes on you get 4 wheel spinning insane power drifts which you have no control over, so any time his sheer ***** out pace would overwhelm my lag free turbo and short ratio box is just lost on twisty tracks like currborough. its also very hard work and the handling shows it's age. It's a testament to his ***** of steel driving approach that he is so quick in it as i don't think i could get within 2 seconds of him on any track in his car.
my brother's evo is very nice tons of usuable grip and the antilag and group n box keeps it surging forward like a mad thing but still a slight lack of get up and go from the bigger turbo compared to my car which acts like a normally aspirated free revving loon machine. oh and the ap racing 362mm 6 pot fronts & 320 4 pot rears he has on have to be used to be believed.
However I still think my car is more usuable and chuckable and had power on tap at all the right times in comparison to both of them. I think i could drive my car quicker at my current standard of driving round most tracks bar maybe shelsley which suits the ***** out torque monsters.
Wait there is a point to all this rambling, I think the route i want to go with my car will be to maximise the smaller turbos output, concentrate on keeping it cool and then go for weight saving and handling upgrades if and where i can find them within reason. as much as i'd love 450bhp i think it would be slower than a light car, lag free set up with 340bhp than gripped like s**t to a blanket.
Just my thoughts from my experience so far with my car and driving plenty of others in anger, but all the records belong to a 500hp beast evo so maybe im talking crap.
We shall see my bro is getting big injectors and 2 bar boost from his car next week which should see a 400/400+ output and then i'll probaly change my tune and maybe cry a little.

Exactly the same thoughts I have, I want to secure the ride then add horsepower as required.
I want to compete to use the car off road not to win anything, the battle will be with myself more than with others, If good things are achieved then great, if there not, it's a blast under safe & controlled conditions.

Thanks for your wise comments, which have been gratefully received.

hello, again, rob, your family has really nice cars ( pics please
)
sorry for all the questions, graham, what is the standard bhp for your sti? and what boost did you run to get 312bhp ( with boost and 3" decat )
I have a my98 2.0 turbo with a green panel filter and dawes ( 1,15 ), hopefully will get a 3" decat by the end of the year. can increase the boost without a remap?
sorry for another thread hijack

It is interesting to read all the comments.
Carlos;
My Sti when i first had it was stock, so about 280 bhp on Optimax fuel.
With the Blitz boost controller and 3'' decat @ 1.3 bar we got 312 bhp on straight Optimax.
I then went to all the mods/20g etc and hit 407 bhp one before the TMIC was overheated, but i feel that 370/380 is a more accurate figure on Optimax again with booster to stablilise the octane rating.
I did the chassis before the 312 bhp conversion and continued to do so for the 407 engine.
a perfect chassis is a must, well before bhp.
You might/will have difficulties with fuel-cut on the stock ecu but the Dawes 'fools' the ecu i think, but there is the danger, the fuelling/timing could lead to detonation and a dead engine.
Fitting a decent ecu is a must, ie Apexi FC,and this i should have done instead of the boost controller, but i knew very little then about tuning Impreza's (not a lot has changed!)
I fitted the 20g expecting to go to a 2.5 litre engine the following year, but that has not materialised (too many $$$$) so i hope to gain more by suspension/drivability next year.
I have been in the '50bhp EVO' Rob talks about above. Not sure if it is 500, but certainly 450.
On the road that car is simply breathtaking.
The short (RA style) box and the lag-free turbo is astounding. The suspension is so compliant it's untrue and the seating is great so the driver is confortable even!
Carlos: Rob's father's Audi is superb, but a classic car now.
The modern Jap cars are just inherently better.
It is Progress.

Yes, yes, very good!
I am sure you know what i mean though
I bet if Mick Harriman drove in competition either of his son's cars he would be very very quick.
But he is much the same age as me and us old guys still have a bit left against the Young Ones, so he gets my vote!

My dad took petes car round currborough as i watched and was visibly quicker than my brother who really is a quick driver. My bro' could take his now sold skyline r34 gtr vspec 2 (mouth full how do the japs write that down?) round a track faster than anything i have ever seen/been in/driven. but my dad loves the ownership and the fettling as much as the results as i think most of us do. If my dad decided on an evo 6 rs with 600bhp i think records would tumble. That will not happen and his love of UR quattros wins every time and I hope I'm the same when I'm 64. I'd love to run a quattro as i grew up with them but the money to make them quick and live with them is rather huge. so my 5k subaru will continue to be abused until that lottery win I'm so sure I'll get.
