Where do you stand if a car you've sold breaks down after selling?

I bought a 106 gti from a garage, he wrote sold as seen with air bag light flasing on the invoice.
The car developed a driveshaft problem on the way home and i sorted it after a lot of messing around myself.
Should i have taken the thing back even though he had wrote sold as seen on it?

Thing is, Im unsure where you stand regarding the airbag because you was happy to drive the car away with that fault being made known to you. You should have took the car back for the driveshaft problem though

Ohh the air bag wasn't a problem, that was a loose lead under the seat.
The driveshaft cost me near on 300 quid to sort out thanks to being in a rush to sell it and paying through the nose for parts!

Sadly I've just had him on the phone telling me that he's had "a mate" look at it and it'll cost £800 to repair but they still don't know what is wrong with it. He told me that he's bringing it back and that he wants his money back to which I replied "you can't do that, I sold you a good car" He's now threatening to get his money back from me either the nice way or the nasty way so I don't know what I can do about it now 
I explained to him that it was a private sale and that I'm not a garage offering warranty but he's not listening and is now threatening me.

As above. confirm addresses, and contact police, if like you say he is a "bad lad" he may already be known to them. Police take a very dim view on men coming the heavy with females.
But on the other hand he knows where you live and is it worth it for £1800 or whatever the price was.

Don't delay, phone today! Sounds like a right nasty piece of work. They'll best advise you and if you are specific about the threats made to you they may pay him a visit in advance.

Log all contact you have with him in writing, write down verbatim anything he says that you think is threatening or nasty.
Don't relent or make any offers to him.

I phoned the police ten minutes after the phonecall 
There is some fantastic advice on here that has been echoed by the police and I don't have to answer the phone or door to him and now call 999 if he shows up. The police are coming tomorrow to take a statement now.

If you sell a car for £500 on Day One & the exhuast falls off on Day Two, who's to say that the £500 was not the right price ie it may be worth £700, with the £200 not paid acting as an allowance to replace the exhaust ...
Sold as seen will always work with a private sale, not a garage sale mind.

The condition of the car was down to him to assess before he bought it. You told him no lies and the noise appeared after the sale and when he was responsible for the car. He has no claim on you and if he threatens you call the Police.

What car is it anyway - Fiat Coupe. The manifolds go on thoise and manifest in the symptoms you describe. Hardly the end of the world. If that guy bought it off you and you're not a mechanic then he should know better than to take your mechanical opinion anyway. Even if the bottom end was knocking was still on him to mget it properly checked.

Those things tick anyway. What's he on about. That ticking might go away. I bought a 16v many moons ago, drove the *** off of it for 2 days and then got a ticking noise. Probably just a bit of grit or dirt affecting a tappet. That blokes trying it on because he's changed his mind. He'll soon get bored love.

I'm going to come clean. This was me using my sisters account yesterday. What started out as a simple question has now turned into a living nightmare. I didn't expect any answers so I used her account and it went from there. By the time it kicked off it seemed a bit late to say it was me.
The latest update is that someone claiming to be his cousin has now threatened to come around tonight and rip me apart. I can't even go home at this rate unless the Police act now.

Advice still stands.
Go home and if anyone comes, call 999 and say you're in fear for your immediate safety.
Where I work we'd be there within a couple of minutes usually, as that type of call takes priority.

thanks guys I really appreciate it. I didn't expect decent replies with me being a mod. I do have a digital camera but I don't know whether I'd have time to take photos of them.
The car ticked for over 2 years and when he viewed the car I was open and honest and pointed it out to him so that he wouldn't come back to me (did me alot didn't it
) What the problem is now is anyones guess. I would have helped him source parts and looked at it for him if he'd been a fair person but I can't now.

If it worries you, why not negotiate a settlement even though the law says you're sweaky clean. (Who ever keeps the car keeps £x ?) For the sake of a couple of hundred quid you could diffuse a ongoing problem / feud that'll cost you dearly in legal fees, vandalism & worry etc.

I sold a car on Fleabay (old diesel 205). Nowt really wrong with it that I didn't point out and I only got 350 ish anyway. I emailed the guy after a day or two giving him some info I'd forgotten. he emailed back and said 'ta, ut you owe me 60 squid for new seats 'cos the ones in the car are broken ...'. Que???? Emailed him for details and left a message on his phone asking for details - in both places pointing out as well that they had been fine when I sold the car to him. He never got back to me at all - just left 'neutral' feedback on Ebay. Trying it on ....
... as tis bloke is so my advice as as above - get the rozzers involved - at least they seem interested. Oh, and have you got friendly neighbours? Get them to keep an eye out and to get pics/number plates etc if you're not about.

If you think you can get the same money for the car (after its been inspected) it may if you are in genuine danger be worth stating you'd take it back as long as its in the same condition (you'd need a starting point here ie last service etc to have any chance of prooving its condition when you sold it) Overall if you/your family are in real danger £1400 is nothing compared to what could happen.
