But Andy you are comparing a modified fabia against a standard Bugeye - which is the slowest Scoob - a Fabia would not see which way a Modded Scoob went once it dug its heels in - ok its not all cut and dried on the road, you have 4WD loss and a Subaru has the aerodynamic properties of a brick - but a Scoob - especially a classic with 280ish bhp is still gonna be a pretty quick car on the road.
A lot of it is down to teh driver as well - i mean **** me i've been outdragged by corsa's when caught off boost and off guard.
swings and rondabouts mate
***edited*** what was your Fabia pushing out at the crank Andy?

When mapped my 40-100 time in 4th was very imprezive and would happily box well above it's weight.
The other is it cost me 2?p per mile over the 13k and 1 year I had it.
I am not sure what my crank power was probably 180 but that would be a guess.

My 2cents
I had a Ford Focus Diesel for a while (don't laugh). I must say, it's low speed grunt came as a real surprise. I Think it had around 190 lbs ft torque, but a transient overboost feature which gave it a peak of just over 200lbs ft when you floored it; this gave it a nice shove and the impression of great performance. It could certainly give a higher powered petrol car a shock if it was caught sleeping!
However, it just wasn't a performance car: literally as soon as the thing woke up and started to deliver, the action was over.
My std classic would have run rings around it.

It was on the back of reading posts on this site from ex-scooby owners that I got the Fabia in the first place. The fabia is massively flawed in many area’s, but it has a couple of tricks up it's sleeve.

No worries mate - i knew your were not bashing Scoobs mate.
i wont even start thinking how much fuel i put in a week
Diesels are light years better than they were years ago.
i went for a spin in a 3 series 330d and was seriosuly impressed
although on paper or maybe santa pod its time woudl not compare.
i think a lot of (high performance) Diesels offer great real world performance

i drive a classic wrx import. Mines had a couple of bits added and soon to be given the full treatment and mapped by Andy f. I love my car and think it is very fast at the moment (its going to be around 350 when the new turbo and remap are done) but i think the diesel argument is very valid as my dad drives around in a couple of years old bmw 330d and they kick out around 200 odd bhp standard. That car is incredibly fast for what it is and bearing in mind its a diesel. I think that the next car i am going to be buying will be one of their 330d convertibles. Thats got to be an almost perfect car for me. Resonable performance and cheap to run.. Think you can't really beat them anymore!!

I can't believe how many receipts you kept! Nice work!
Got some crystal side and front indicator lenses today from scoobyworld. A steal at only £40 for the set.
When are you picking up your new toy??

I dont think anyone can say a UK classic is slow, in the same way you cant say ANY car that has a sub 6 second 0-60 time is slow.
Its all relative though - if speed is all you are interested in ( straight line in particualr ) then the Impreza isnt the best car to buy as they were never designed to be straight line cars.
Where the Impreza wins is speed + handling - this is why they are often faster or as fast as much more expensive / more powerful cars etc... in track tests, which give a much better 'real world' idea of the abilities.
Unless you only drive on motorways, or live in the USA where they have dead straight roads, then comparing the Impreza with X, Y or Z hot hatch or diesel is pretty meaningless when most cars cant corner anywhere near as quickly, so on a track or normal road would find it hard to keep up.

I don't think I've ever seen a UK Classic produce it's rated 208/215bhp - every single one has been a fair chunk more, even on 95ron.
0-60, is, as SIDC faq states, is quite a bit quicker than quoted.
But then, I've never seen a classic obtain its quoted MPG figures either
Makes me wonder whos **** they pulled these figures from

So ok modern diesels are quick, very quick if modded BUT like the A4 i had that was chipped, it was very quick, but not as quick as my scoob!, it only ever returned 28-30mpg and it lasted 3 months before it went pop and left me stranded on the A14 for 5 hours!
The point of having a diesel is surely fuel econemy? I have a workmate with a new A4 3 litre tdi i think it is which in traffic only gives back 20 mpg in town!
So why? Because they are dirty, black smoke bellowing planet killers?
This is what annoys me!, My tax costs me now £190, i do @4k miles a year in my scoob, not much damage to the planet there really, when you think of all these big engine diesel cars out there paying less tax and doing anything upto 100k miles a year, not getting that many more miles to the gallon than me in my scoob and churning out a huge amount more of black soot and poluntent......

What a load of old cr@p is being posted in this thread, oil burners for christ sake, ok you get a good blast of torque from 1800 - 4000 rpm but then its over and you have to change up a gear.
Classsic Subaru 0 - 60 in under 6 seconds standard handling puts a grin on your face every time you drive it (well nearly).
Name one poxy, boring, grannies car, front wheel drive clackety oil burner that goes from 0 - 100 in around 15 seconds or 0 - 60 in 5.8.
If there are any they'll cost a damn site more than a new Subaru
Most of these "hot hatch" tdi's are 0 - 60 in 8 seconds plus and over 100 their pants, ive driven most of them.
And Skoda for gods sake guys get a grip.

For some reason it's in litres/100km even though its a uk car and its in the old EEC/93/113 measuring system (being a MY97)
So:
Urban: 13.8 l/100km
Extra Urban: 8.1 l/100km
Combined: 10.2 l/100km
Plug that into google (sod the calculator ), taking careful note that it's imperial gallons, not US gallons and we get:
Urban: 20.469 mpg
Extra Urban: 34.874
Combined: 27.694
34.874mpg....maybe possible if I stuck my **** out the sunroof and lit my farts
