long metal nail file.. or one of them combs with the point on the end.. hairspray jobbie is good too.. my missus carries them not had to use them yet, thank god.....

Another piece of advice is to pretend you're on the phone - thinking being that if someone sees you are on the phone they are less likely to attack you !

sorry but that last bit of advice is quite useless. do you not remember the case of that young holiday maker that was murdered on new years eve in some hot country. she was on the phone to her mum when she was dragged off and raped and then murdered!!!!

.I'm not a murderer / rapist so I don't know if someone being on the phone would put me off - But I suspect it would make you think.

i would go with the pepper sprays, you cant go far wrong. As said above, you would expect that you wouldnt get into trouble for using one of the others, but in todays sh ite society, the mugger will get commended for apprhending you with it!

While pepper spray is good the absolute tossers who make up the countrys police force will get most upset if they find that a woman has used it in self defense against a rapist. I think they treat it almost like a fire arms offence so expect your wife/girlfrined to get a longer sentence than the would be rapist.
Also people on the phone are easy targets as they are not paying attention. Never talk on the phone unless you know the area is safe as its an open invitaion to a theif/mugger etc.

The teeth of a normal hair comb raked under someone's nose is VERY painful, likewise, a bunch of keys held in the fist with the keys sticking out between the fingers is a another useful deterrant. Both items are usually found in a ladies handbag. Quite legal.
Alas, even if she carried a glock in her bag, chances are, things would happen so fast she wouldn't have time to retrieve it to use.

It maybe that the crime was not categorised as mugging but to say that mugging never occured in the UK until 1976 is ridiculous. As DL says what about Highwaymen.

Personally think self-defence classes/instruction much better..
more versatile to a given situation. There are several ways to disable someone quickly long enough to make an escape. And face it. realistically
thats all the effect she would expect from a weapon.
By time she has delved in the handbag for protection its too little too late.
And the weapon could also be taken off her and used against her.

SD classes - and regular ones, not just 6 weeks and a nice certificate at the end of it. Whatever she has, it will either be too hidden for her to use (what mugger allows someone to look in their handbag? And have you ever SEEN the contents of a woman's handbag? 
) or she will freeze after being too terrified to use it.
You need to react subconsciously, not consciously, and that only comes with training - or luck, but I wouldn't rely on that.
And TBH, the chances of a size 6 woman legally carrying something that totally disables her attacker in one hit are pretty miniscule anyway. In most cases she'd miss his eyes or whatever, and he'd then come back twice as hard. Not something you'd want to encourage.
In short, there's no magic bullet - if there was, we'd all be using it already.

How about a 18" ***** the sort that takes 4 x size dd batteries, That way you/she can claim it has other uses if she ever has to subdue some ****** in anger!

Oh and self defence classes, it will give confidence and a chance if she is attacked, they run them for women just for this sort of situation. Talk to you local Police station or council or leisure centre - if not the ***** has it merits!

.Fascist, they need counselling ideally a all expenses paid for foreign holiday and some community service and the very most. These are vunerable deprived people unnable to work or earn money by any means other than stealing it.

.Good idea...in the US where they kill bad people there is hardly any crime at all.....we should look at these safer placers and copy them.
Sadam Hussein used to cut muggers arms off.....pity he's gone otherwise i'd be out of Henley On Thames and off to bagdad for some safe streets to walk at night.
