Coolest cars my dad had were -

Triumph Stag
Triumph Dolomite Sprint (x2)
Alfa Romeo GTV2000 (80's version)

Definitely got my love of cars from him (and returned the favour when I got my first scoob and once driven decided he had to have one - we're now both on our second scoobs )

Let's think now....

Austin 8
A40 van with window conversion
Wolseley 4/44
Hillman Super Minx estate
Triumph 2000.

I guess it would have to be the Triumph, with its lovely leather. Cool though? I don't think so

I wonder what j.r-xrs would say?

Nice thread.

Of the ones I can remember.

E30 325i
Lotus eclat riviera
mk1 Lotus Cortina
Gilbern Genie
Dolomite Sprint
Saab 96 (we thought it was cool anyway )
Tickford Capri
2.8i capri
Alfa 75

He also has a morris traveller (amazing modified engine in it)..despite that I remember walking home in the rain rather than get in it if my mates were watching!! He gives me a hard time about that to this very day.
Nowadays I would drive absolutely anything, even a Robin reliant...but when you are about 13 it's very different.

Hmm. A couple of Spitfires, a Beetle, a couple of Alfasuds - one of which actually worked quite well. My favourite though had to be either the Volvo 164 or the Peugeot 604 that replaced it.

They were when I was a kid, fond memories. Of his cars that I've driven, it would be the Mk2 Jetta gti probably. Since then he's had beemers, nice but not cool.

An Austin A35. We thought he was a gangster ! It was ok until the day he slid on some black ice into a wall and a coping stone fell off onto the bonnet and more or less finished it off.

Very much so. I love the shape of the 2000/2500 though, and the Dolly Sprint was a car I really fancied in my youth.

I can (almost) take or leave fast cars these days... all I really want is a garage full of 70s vehicles. 240z, dolly sprint and a rover P6... I'd be a happy man for the price of a new focus!

The two that stand out for me are.....

In the 70's.
Rover SDI V8 3500 - awesome sound and looks in the day.

In the 80's
Senator 3l 24V in white (Big grill version) for some reason everyone used to get out of the way on motorways and dual carraigeways.

He now runs a new Fiesta 1.6 Ghia which is actually great fun to drive.

Cheers

Quote: But then he will have to post what his dad had.....
I asked him, he says his Dad didn't drive

So, amongst some of my Dad's cars were:

1964 Mini Traveller with Blydenstein engine conversion in which he came first in a hill climb. My mum came second in the ladies section of the same event I was an 18 month old spectator at the time and blame this event solely on subsequent my love of motorsport

1966 1275 Mini Cooper S

1968 Lotus Cortina MK1

1967 Hillman Imp with silver painted wheels and the number plate offset to one side (he assures me this was cool at the time )

An early '60s Austin A35 van

And part ownership of an Aston Martin DBS and E-Type Jag

One of these

Not many made, Dad and two of his pals went over to france to buy them and razzed them back. Very rare, think they did a test on top gear many moons ago.

Cars I remember them having

Datsun (cant remember what but dad always said it was fast and he loved it)
Nissan Micra (the original old shape)
Hyundai Accent (again the old shape)
Mazda 323F
Jag X type 2.5 V6. (current car)

I definately didnt get my love of cars from my dad. Although I remember the number plates from all the cars (apart from the Datsun as I was too young) Dads actually picked up a love of cars from me recently, started to get into washing and polishing the Jag and asking about my motors. Takes a bit of interest, although he hasnt learnt what a decent car is. He hates my RX7 and says an Audi TT would beat it...lol

My Dad was a motor trader, real Arthur Daley type, so we had loads of Jags and Mercs when I was younger. The more memorable cars are...

Jags V12 XJS - Red, lowered and bodykitted B100D NH
Merc SL60 AMG - Current car and very rapid, feels like a go-cart on steroids

Good thread.

My old man's best car by far was a Valiant Charger which was based on the Valiant with a hefty V8 in it.

http://www.valiant.org/charger.html

The best thing about it, apart from being indecently rapid in those days was the advert which used to feature a load of people, including kids, shouting 'Hey Charger' whilst making the victory V sign as one went past in the adverts.

For a six year old, being identified as the bloke with the Dad who had a Charger was mucho cool and having kids scream 'hey charger' at you as you were being driven along was a buzz. Dad got pissed off with it though...

My Dad used to like his cars. The coolest Jag was a two tone silver/deep metallic red SII XJ6.

Next to that would be the car he still had before he passed away - A Metallic Black XJS with a Lister ground effects kit (skirts/valances) It always stood out. Even moreso when he dumped on some 18" BBS wheels Still have it today, nesting in a garage collecting dust.

Before the Jags there was a very cool BMW 2500CS coupe. A very very cool car - Pillarless with rear windows that wond down. Very rare car, even when it was new.

Then there was the Stag....in Metallic Brown with gold stripes, Niiiiiice

My favourite drivers car was the 1987 911 Supersport, in Gaurds red...of course. No car I have driven has even sniffed close to "feel" of driving one of these.

However, my mum was the "real" petrol head. She was teh one who liked to drive fast...my Dad just wanted to look good

Yes, this woman used to kart me round in the back of her red TR6 (how on earth I fitted in the back of there I never know ).And not only that, when teh engine was re-built it was uprated with High comp pistons, flowed head and somewhat loud twin exhaust exhaust that has addicted me to the noise of a well sorted straight 6 engine

Following that, there was the XR3i, in proper 80's style it was white with red pinstripes and dogleg alloys
Then it went down hill, with a Fiesta sport, followed by an array of Toyota Celicas.

My Dad went through Cortina's Mk 1,2,3 & 5.

Not cool at the time, but the Old Skool Ford boys these days may think so

Excellent thread

Good thread.

His "cool" cars would include a Jensen Gt from the early70's (lotus twin cam engine, steel fastback bodyshell), an Original Reliant Scimitar GTE in banana yellow and a TWR (from the touring car efforts) tuned, braked and suspended V12 XJS that would do 165 plus mph and was considerably quicker above 100 mpg than most things around at that time other than a 911 turbo , and yet in absolute luxury.

My dad used to have a MkII Jag in the late 60's but sold after a few months as he couldn't afford to run it, he once scared his mate by doing 106mph on the M1.

In the 50s my dad had a big old Humber Super Snipe with a Perkins 6 diesel from some lorry. Talk about torque, you could drive around all day in top.
Then he had a Jaguar 3.8 Mk11, which he eventually traded in for a Jaguar S Type, which he had until he passed away in 1982.
