How about a TD04 Hybrid from Andy F? Looks good in the Scooby Mag Project WRX.

It does, doesn't it. My personal concern with staying with the hybrid TD04 is that I want the "rush" you get from the Sti Turbos -you know, the way it just seems to dump lots more torque on you suddenly and send you shooting up the road as the turbo spools. I'm wondering if the modified TD04 can do this, or whether is just provides more of the same TD04 character, i.e. no real marked step beteen on and off-boost, just "always there"?

I'll let you know what it's like! I'm getting a TD04 Hybrid fitted today and mapped tomorrow by Andy . I thought about getting a TD05 but bottled it basically for fear of wrecking my gearbox.

I've got 305lbtorque and blew the teeth off my third gear on Friday....but the egarbox was on it's way out (crunching into 1st, reverse and a pain to get into third) so i'm hoping with a bit of care it won't go again......

my car is on 133k miles on the same box and im now running 302bhp and 309lbs although this has only happend within the last 4 months, it still ran good power before that. ive had my td05fe fitted for about 50k miles and not one problem with it and i only have the standard uk box

How does the car get driven?
I think this is a big factor.

My 3rd blew itself apart a couple of weeks after having a Vf28 and a remap (already had a FMIC).

I put it down to old age as it had done nearly 90k, I had a replacement dropped in a month ago by API and all seems ok (He says touching wood)

If you don't mind me asking, what was the total cost of the gearbox, fitted.
Was it an uprated box of any kind?

mate of mine has a 2.5 and 350 bhp with similar torque on a 94 uk
still on its original gearbox, well over 100,000 miles and he does alot of track days
some get lucky i spose

mine is also circa 350bhp / 340 lbs/ft torque but i sorted my box before the inevitable by getting the PPG gearsets fitted.

For the record, I am another TD05 gearbox failure, MY99 not driven too hard.

I think you have more chance of it going than being one of the lucky ones that it holds together for.

I blew mine up with the standard TD04, full decat and Tek3, never been driven really hard since new (me).
Driving over a slow bump at 5mph and just lost all gears.
Found a tooth from 1st gear wedging the entire box up.

Car is a 2002 WRX

I've been doing this to mine with 407 bhp for 3 years on a stock Sti v3/AP organic clutch and stick semi-slick tyres.

Still runs great!

Maybe i am the very lucky one?

Sti box seems stronger even from 97 onwards. Uk boxes are not paticularly strong.
