week of fun
should mention that the car starts instantly from a cold start, a little bit of hunting untill she's warmed up and then spot on - I was told that cold starts would be bad but it seems Bob has got it spot on with mine. It was said at the garage that the simtek started better than the motec and RCM seemd quiet impressed - it was something I was worrying about as Olly had alway recommended the motec, thanks goes to Bob Rawles fot that one
350 miles down only 1000 more untill its back with RCM for a check over then the drive to Swindon to see Bob for the final mapping session
might have to treat the other half to a trip to Scotland

thanks Simon, i hopefully should be at japfest this year not sure on the rest
I think mine is the first RCM 500 turbo currently in use but I am sure it is very simular to the md321 V
I know that Dynamix is using this turbo to good effect but is there anyone else using the "V"?

put some miles on the car this weekend, the car is a dream to drive on open roads, instantly notice how smooth it is, coming on and off the throttle is night and day to how it was before, I guess this has allot to do with the new simtek running a map senor rather than the maf
getting used to the clutch and light pullies is a different story
I’m not sure if it’s me forgetting how the car was or the new light pullies, but hard work is putting it lightly - I guess driving a 1 litre polo for 6 months has had an effect - I don't think the current setup would last if I needed to use the car daily ( if Olly from RCM was reading this he would smile as he said a 6 speed with their clutch would be a much better option )
My twin plate clutch still seems to be silent, but I do find the noise of the billet selector forks quite loud which I have never seen written before
I’m sure running the car in has allot to do with me falling out with the gear box\clutch as let’s face it a tuned wrx never made a good shopping car but I can’t help wish I went for a 6 speed

Hi Rich. Glad things are turning out good for you.
Been following your thread and much of it and many of your comments regarding RCM take me back to when I had my engine built by them.
What you say about "the car drives like a dream" is what I have tried to put over in my thread.
The biggest problem being that it does not prove wise to let every Tom Dick & Harry drive yours or my car.
I drove mine in anger for the first time at The Advanced Driving Techniques day at North Weald Aerodrome (high recommended) and it was truly awesome to drive.!! ( 4 timed laps / quickest on first three and pipped by 1 second on the 4th timed lap by a 520 bhp Evo ( My P1 was running just over 400 ).
RCM's work always looks fabulous but the driving aspect is what other guys cannot see or feel, and that far exceeds the visual aspects of their work.
I feel the same with mine. I hear numerous comments on how nice everything looks regarding my car, but it's when you "drive" an RCM prepared car that you realise just how good they are.
I have had many nice cars but my P1 is leagues above anything I have driven when it come to the pure feel and response from the driver's seat.
(The Gobstopper must be something else to drive)!!
When your car has it's final map, you will then begin to understand just how good RCM are at what they do !!!!, it will also justify the monies you have spent with them.
My comments only relate to the differences from my original engine that was running at around 300bhp to when I had my final map at just over 400. The engine was limited to just over 400 until the rest of the car was strong enough, however it now is.
The difference was awesome.
When I collect mine in a week or two running with RCM's new rotated turbo kit I think I will be in for even a bigger shock running mid to high 500's.
Good luck Rich (happy days ahead)
thanks for you time on monday sorry to keep you talking for so long It was just a great opportunity to gain some good informed info. Looked and sounded great the finish is amazing the engine bay is a work of art (as with all the other big build i have seen from RCM eg SkullFudges monster
)
thanks again chris
)thanks again chris
no problem Chris was nice to talk to a genuine subaru fan rather than the new skhool
im sure the parts will serve you well and don't let Olly temp you in to the garage it will only cost you money
must say I was only thinking today how good the 2.5 feels I am sure you will have a nice suprise when its all sorted, forget snet roumers and get an email sent to Bob he will set you in the right direction

lol sorry
yeah never had second thoughts about RCM taking into account the cost and time taken - the car has really settled down with regards the clutch , i think it just took time to bed down again, not what i would call stock but is much more managable
Clive id be interest to find out how your get on with your new clutch - any news on when you will get it back ?
I have contacted Bob to see what sort of notice he needs before he can map mine , got about 500 mile on her now

Was beginning to think I had annoyed you somehow

Not sure when I get mine back Rich. They are waiting on Silicone hoses and the fabrication of a wing box.
Will let you know about the new clutch when I collect it mate
Have fun.

Your poor polo will be feeling left out, bob booked up till may when i emailed him, it will be interesting on both your thoughts when you have your full power set ups on the road
Having driven SleeperSy's monster up the drag strip 5 times last weekend I know have some indication of what to expect. Was running well over 600bhp with NO2 and it was totally awesome.
Cars at RCM for a once over and to finish off a few things before the final map on 13th of June
They have just fit the spec c anti surge kit along with the bosch 10bar pump, which should be fine for what i use the car for

fingers crossed I will get a new set of bonnet dampers to get rid of the nasty scott Lowe versions which have rusted

looks good mate will be interested in your thoughts when its all done. Still waiting for olly to email back when he can book that car in, been 2 weeks since i 1st emailed him, looking 4ward to testing out all those bits and my gearbox
Think i will end up going for solris ecu sounds like its very similar to your ecu but it works with DBW and cost half as much as motec. have you had any issues with the car since we talked ? hope she is still going well

big day tomorrow
, hopefully Bob will work his magic as usual and we will see what the car can really do
the car will be run on plain Tesco’s 99 ron as the closest shell garage is a 20 mile round trip from home, all involved don’t think it will make a huge difference
RCM have swapped the old turbo ( read 1000 miles old) and put on the very latest rcm 500, still based on the md555 but RCM have made changes which they think will improve spool and top end - all this was free of charge to me
Not got a clue what Boost Bob will run, I have seen 2.5’s running 1.5 to 2 bar ! –
From the start the brief I gave Olly was a fast road car and I wasn’t chasing figures, but it really would be nice if we can hit 500bhp. It’s all in the hands of Bob now

Im sure I could wreck a std engine at 220bhp by giving it large on the loud pedal when the oil is still cold
I think allot of subaru problems are caused by the owners not the modifications
look after the car and it should be fine, mine was

car feels great Driveability
If anyone has talked to me outside of snet they will know I wasn’t happy with the way the car behaved in stop start traffic, Bob wasn’t in the car 5 minutes before he noticed the problem and set to, this included a drive round Swindon town, this has completely transformed the way the car drives , not quiet stock but an infinite improvement .The car is now a pleasure to drive again and I can enjoy driving even if it’s just to and from work this is what this project was all about, I had it in my head that with all this extra performance I would have to make do with the drivability aspect, what a load of rubbish

Performance
The mapping went as usual holding different boost levels, rolling on the accelerator to full on wot in all gears. The car has always been quick but after not driving the car for a while this was something else , Bob only had to tell me off once for going through the gears like a granny
First thing I noticed when going through the gears is you feel the car move \squirm about, only a little but you notice it in the dry so I bet it’s going to be an animal in the wet – but if Bob is going to run 2 bar in the mid range I guess that is going to happen
The power starts around 3k mark and pulls hard to about 7k when you can feel it wants a gear change
It was mentioned that Bob would have liked to give it a bit more top end power but the turbo wouldn’t give any more than 1.6 bar at the top due to my engine breathing so well. If it had been a 2 litre car it wouldn’t have been an issue but with the 2.5 ,1.8 bar at the top was too much for the turbo instead we had to settle with 1.6. For this reason Bob seemed to think the car wouldn’t produce the 500bhp I was after, more around the 470 mark but I would need to get on some rollers to be sure
I’m not to bothered about figures just yet as the car feels too fast for me right now ( if Bob had said its well over 500 I would have believed him ) so I’m not going to change anything just yet but as with all things Subaru there is more to come if I want it

Hi Chris
I still don't know how to answer that question
My 2L was running a tad under 400 and done on a budget, my 2.5 is running 450 plus and had a bit of money threw at it so I can’t compare apples with apples
In its 2L stage the car was a flyer past 4k revs - once on the boil it was a hoot, power all the way to the limiter, problem being the limiter came in far too soon on the stock wrx heads - always fun to drive on a spirited run home but you did have to work at it
The 2.5 seems to be the opposite, on a small country lane 3rd gear is all you need, on a larger "a" road put it in 4ths and you’re away, no need for dancing around with the gear box like before. At higher revs you can feel the car wanting a gear change as the power falls away around 6800 - 7000 revs – the car still has fewer than 2k miles on the clock so this may change a little as it loosens up
The 2.5 is easier to drive and is faster in all most all aspect of road driving yet I can’t help but miss the eagerness to be thrashed that the 2L gave,
I am sure which ever you go with will be fine but I can’t help but think if you go down the 2l route you will miss the low down power and off boost characteristics of the 2.5
I’m not sure if it’s me getting older or going over 400 bhp has in some way taken some of the fun away from the Sunday blast around the country Lanes. My car hits 100 mph in seconds and I find myself backing off all the time as the voices start to tell me this isn’t a race track – My braking points are way off and you can really feel the extra grunt as you come back on the power, which is a bit intimidating but I’m sure I will get to grips with it in time. On the up side (if having too much power can be a classed as a down) early morning Dual tracks are a whole new play ground

Trying to pass the time till feb seems so far away. Yep its a hard one i have never driven a 2l so its more out of interest , sure I will change my mind multiple times between now and then, love the way my 2.5 pull low down great for dealing with the unexpected ( *** BMW
) also I suppose it’s more suited to the road environment. I am sure the speeds limits must come and go in a blink of an eye must be 60 in mid to high 3s ?. have you decided on the 6 speed yet ?
Ha ha feel really sorry for you having to put up with all that power

Bob would have liked to give it a bit more top end power but the turbo wouldn’t give any more than 1.6 bar at the top due to my engine breathing so well.
hi rich, what do you mean by "breathing so well"?
