That reminds me. Few years back I was working in Epsom. And 1 came over with the landie underneath it. About 10 mins later he was back, without the landie No idea if it fell off or whether he'd put it down. but the pilot was really chucking the thing about. Had it at some horrendous angles. Visually exciting, though I must admit I thought he was about to bin it. But he didn't. Straightened it all up, and pushed off.

It was supposed to be 16 not 6, my keys never work, my words come out like a 3 year olds! No I'm not in the army but my husband is, that's the only reason I knew some stuff, I know that 51 para sqn that my husband is with from here are down on this exercise, and we were with 23 air assault in 2003. I know there are no Apache's housed here, I said we have Chinooks and helicopters landing behind our house, not about anything being kept here, when I meant here I meant in general not as in Ripon, Disforth is only down the road so it's not like it's miles and miles away, I think I would know if we had anything like that housed here, we aren't that lucky

Dishforth is only 6 miles from ripon, you should see them patrolling the skies of north yorkshire very regularly!

Chatting to mate who works at wattisham yesterday and he confirmed there's a lot of extra helicopters there for the exercise

Passed some very mean looking swiss vehicles heading towards wattisham this morrning. Some Hummer style jeeps and some more landrover style...though they had no passenger windscreen (i.e. UK drivers side) and instead has a very large barrel sticking through

Tell you what would liven things up a bit, wait for a real low Apache to head your way, then line up a rack of BIG fireworks in your neighbours garden and point them in the general direction of the approaching chopper, light the fuze and retreat to the comfort of your own living room, you won't need surround sound

My mum and dad live around 1 mile from wattisham airfield, and regularly get 2 or 3 apaches flying very low over their house! Never have the camera ready to snap them though!

Got a Chinook flying round the camp at the moment, I'll see if I can get some pics if it comes to land but I don't think it's going to.

Another time I saw one accidentally launch a flare battery. As soon as he realised he was letting out flares, he pulled up and got as much height as possible! Think of the headlines now days?

1.Apart from the helmets the pilots wear, there are no spare for them in the whole of the forces, no helmet no operational capable Apache.

2.Also we have just spent a small fortune on air to ground comms for the apache 3. Not to mention the unreliable targetting computer we insisted on designing ourselves instead of taking a USA Tried and tested ready one.
4. They also can't fly in the mountains of Afganistan due to the altitude,so expect some dodgy stuff in the Deployment in May.

Best peice of kit, don't make me laugh, 3 years behind shedule and over spent on budget.

Should have asked - where abouts are you?

Used to play pool against someone from Bricett way, and his name was Dean Smith, did ask him a few years back if he had a scoob, but he looked very confused, so I figured it wasnt you

Ah Wattisham (or What-a-shame as it was known). Worked there for five years, four when RAF then another year when Army. Good times.

Are you an apache technician? Mountain flying was done and dusted last week in northern scotland in order for afghanistan! Air to ground comms was sorted in november 05 with apache linking well well with troops in an exercise solely for that purpose! Apache done well in firepower demos in canada with the 1st hellfire missiles

As to helmets, there are far more in the system than you are making out! 6 apaches are going to afghanistan so thats 12 helmets. There are over 100 helmets in the system for our 67 individual aircraft! No helmets no operational deployment, dont make me laugh. You really think that would ground a fleet of apaches?

Not sure about the tracking system you are on about! The FCR and tads/pnvs have had a few niggles but again all problems are now solved.

Name a better bit of kit in the uk armed forces than the apache? There is nothing it cant do!
