Anyone that thinks the EJ257 in a road car is capable of 700HP has been sniffing glue! - Wake up.. its not happening, having said that dyno figures are one thing, count the engine life in hours or laps of the track.
I personally wouldnt run more than 400hp out of a 257.. and if wanting more power I wouldnt use a 257. IMHO.
Personally I dont think anything like 600+ is sensible for a 4 cylinder subaru engine.
Each to their own though, and this only my opinion, and not aimed at Ian or Mike@ScoobyMania as they havent 'just' used a 257, and Im sure theres more done than just listed

count the engine life in hours or laps of the track.
How many cars do we know of out there that have had a considerable life while producing above 500bhp?
Not many for sure. 1/4mile cars are one thing, but road/track cars are another.
A fair few cars have substantial power above 500 but can spend a lot of time off the road as the owner develops it further in the quest for a better vehicle in their eyes.
Something to think about if anyone is aiming for this kind of power level.

Check www.crawfordperformance.com I think they have a 719 whp daily driver on there gallery veiw. I agree that longevity of high bhp units may be an issue but it depends on how its done. Plus the fact that just because you have that sort of power under your foot, it does'nt mean you have to cane it all the time.

Thanks for the advice and i really appreciate your views on this.
My new job should help fund the addiction with wanting more and if i can push 400hp when i have saved enough money up i will be more than happy.
From my point of view you could probably have too much power for everyday road use but 400hp would seem realistic for me to afford and a power figure with the best trade off.
Thanks again.

Here's food for thought
http://bbs.22b.com/cgi-bin/ultimateb...88&p=31#001229
Mine's the yellow trace compared with others that have had more work done to them and remembering that the brief I gave Scoobymania was for a daily driver, that could be used on the roads with good longevity and NOT a RWYB, straight line, blow up special.
If I wanted more power I could have more work done BUT it would make it into something I don't want...

I know that Ian!!
Ive also said the same to Alan. If an ej257 was available when I built mine, then I may have tried one.. Ill find my graph and over lay that too
Like I said I dont think an EJ257 can take the power (and I mean just an EJ257) Like I said Ill be interested to see how much abuse the 257's take
Im basing my comments on other engines I've seen, and John Bank's observations.
However what people reading this thread need to realise is that Ian's engine is a resleeved 257 which is why I'm interested to see how you get on.
As before its not a dig..

I'll keep posting (perhaps on this thread unless it gets too large!).
BTW - since the temperature has risen and I found myself on some quiet roads last night I had bit more of a play. Booted it from a rolling start in second and realised why you guys have to change gear so quick on those in-car videos. I'm having to re-align my brain not to hang on to the gears for as long

It was low speed but has wrecked my door the rear driver's door and some bodywork. It hit the back wheel as well so I'm not sure if there's more than bodywork damage.
Oh hum, someone up there does'nt like me having the Scoob back even though I've been calm and driving it like a p*ssy.

After a long day of hassle his Insurance Company have accepted liablity. It's now at a Body Repair specialists and I'm in a Vectra hire car. Oh hum, could be worse and at least I'm not claiming on my insurance and suffering £500 excess and an increased premium...

When I arrived all the mechanics came out and it was'nt soon before the bonnet was up. I had a word with the Manager who promised it would'nt leave the gates. Just to be sure I noted the mileage with him

good to see it's finally complete Ian
How does it compare to the 360CS on maximum attack?
*sorry- had to ask*
Graph is nice.
Gutted for you with the damage
If nothing else; the vectra should make the scoob feel even more bonkers when you get it back!

I'm loving driving the Scoob again - my ideal of a high power, no lag, well sorted car for the road as well as plenty to play with for the track. I just hope there's no mechanical damage from the crash. Was preparing a second set of alloys with track rubber on them as well to put it through it's paces - D'oh!
Hope all's going well with yours mate...

Hi Iain,
I guess I was expecting that answer
'Chalk and cheese'- nice summation.
Did the dealer ruin the CS experience for you? Have you sold it now? X fingers the damage on your scoob is cosmetic only.
Nice stealth exterior on the scoob btw
As for mine; been trying to sell it as I have knackered my left shoulder meaning that manual gearshifts are 'interesting'.
I have had to buy an auto, audi a4 avant, and as mentioned- been trying to sell the scoob as it is just sat undriven in the garage
It's been fun, but it's time to go...
also seen here:
www.bradwarren.f9.co.uk
Tis a sad thing.. I need the sale of the scoob to pay for the Audi!
Mind you; as soon as my arm is reet, and my pocket can take it I shall be back with mad bad older scoob in track weapon trim (just don't tell the wife!)

During this time I got endless reassurances and excuses and was driving the sloppiest rep cars in the UK, whilst all the time missing the best of the weather and still paying the insurance, navtrak and depreciation on the CS.
In the end I made the MD buy it back. It's still there now I think...
Bumped into their chief mechanic a month later who told me the head of JCT slashed all the wages and told them to make back what they had been earning by overtime. The good ones all left hence the guy working on mine was 1 month out of a Rover dealership. He rebuilt my front suspension and anti-roll bar with the parts used on a normal 360 not a CS + they did'nt give a cr@p about the cars, hence all the damage.
To say I'm sick to death of JCT is an understatement and I can't look at Thrappers or the CS in the same way. Good job the Scoob is so awesome as a daily driver/road car and a track day animal.
Phew! Still too long a story
Hope your shoulder heals soon mate and you find a good buyer for your pride and joy,
Ian

I spent 2 months biting my lip and listening to what I was being told. After 2 months I grabbed the MD and explained the situation of bad service and mis-information. He promised to put it right (i.e. last chance and all will be forgiven). That's when it came back totally knackered and damaged. At this point I drove straight down, grabbed him, totally lost it. I've not been so angry/loud in years and was still red in the face an hour later. Very unprofessional I know - I can put up with alot but there is only so far anyone can be pushed. That's when the topic of "I'm not taking this car away again and you're buying it back" came up.
Just to put it back on topic - Scoobymania was the total reverse. Listen to your spec (however awkward!), keep you informed on the build, push you to test it and give them a niggle list, keep checking in to see if everything is running OK - absolute pleasure!

It's back
Quality Repair by Alton cars. Big thanks to John the Manager there - he went above and beyond the call of duty looking after it...
I (and many others) have looked over it and you just cannot tell it's been damaged:
Due back to Scoobymania in a week or so to have a set of Defi Gauges fitted on top of the dashboard. They're checking the car for hidden damage (suspension, bearing, diff etc) for free as well as fitting another set of stickers on the right (photo of the left for comparison) for nothing.
Yet further proof of a top outfit that really care about their customers and cars!
Regards,
A very happy Knobby

Update:
I've now put 4,000 miles on it with nothing other than a few niggles.
I've also put a new set of centre Defi Gauges on.
Still getting quality service and backup from Scooby Mania.
About to do a track day and giving it proper caning on some Toyo PXR888's
