Sounds like we have very similar fathers David. It is brilliant to have an old man like that around and i too feel very lucky to have mine. It gives you a little more confidence to go attacking your car/house/whatever knowing that if the worst comes to the worst you can pick the old mans brain for advice.

That's also excellent advice about the tools. Six months ago i moved out from my parents (i just turned 24 on Tuesday) into my first house and that was the best piece of advice my father gave me about sorting out my garage. I bought all the basics and have been adding as and when i need things. Another good piece of advice is to always buy the best you can afford - the Snap-On wrench which seems expensive will probably be the last one you ever buy.

Great to see another 'Wallis' project thread on the go. Looking forward to seeing how this incarnation evolves.

Indeed... only a few days old, and already there's forward progress in spades...

I too had a father whom i learnt an awful lot from, i worked with him for 17 yrs til he was taken ill and then passed away since then i've built a new house, and continued playing with cars and houses and all sorts.....
i'm good with my hands, but not very clever on paper....

Somehow that garage looks bigger to last time!
Thanks for welder info. Been looking at Mig/Tig for Xmas.
Looks like a LOT of plug welding to do and grinding. I've used Comma red Oxide in the past and have managed to plug weld through it well enought including real spot welding at times when I did radical welding on my 911 in 88, and all is still solid today.
Thanks for all the pics , very interesting, and tempting to go full competition spec on my Sti.

40 Kg is a serious weight saving David.

Paul, that was not the best of hill climb starts, but you know all the conversations that have been said on the Launch' topic, but that was 5000 rpm and dump the clutch, just hung on to the revs in 1st too long (rev limiter) but I've always had issues since the better engine and the sticky Kumhos.
My very best has been 2.03 to cover 64ft from a true standing start, no Drag racing run-up slots in hillclimbing.

sounds like more slipping of the clutch to me, and agreed with paul.. that isnt a launch

I still think under 2 seconds is do able.

last ones came from somewhere in seacroft behind NTL, but I didnt buy them so dont know where.

Bolt and Bend over Nut supplies.. they aint cheap!

While David is doing the welding...

The traction on a hill start is less than a drag strip, especially Santa Pod, but that sounds like an excuse (maybe it is) so I will try harder next year.
No smelling clutch starts but pleanty of one-wheel spin launches. Still, saves the box.

Carl: did you get your Type R?

I'm fourteen and my father bought me a quadbike at the age of seven, a semi built Locost at the age of 12 and now (age 14) he lets me dismantle his scoob and trusts that i know enough about cars to do a sensible job. Is he trusting or just plain mad?

Few new pics..

Unfortunatley drilled a hole in my hand with the spot weld drill.. Ouch.

Just checking panels fit.. so need to fit front door, check gaps and then clamp and weld.

Didnt do as much becuase I went for a curry with Pat.

Big thanks to scoobyclinic for sending some weld through primer on the same day.. top service

David, whilst your at it with all the sill work, do you think it would be worthwhile adding some jacking tubes 'WRC style' so you can get it up on tall stands nice and easy in the garage?

At this rate about 10 mins work for you!

Cheers.. got a lot of welding.. (got to fill the holes where spot drill went through (or needed to)) and then clean it up and spot weld it on.. and try and make it look standard

Then seam weld the cuts.. and clean / grind / sand / fill / prep / prime etc etc..

Argh..

about 6 hours more work at a guess.. then need to locate a drivers side sill as the car mikee sold to my mate has a buggered drivers side sill.. , having said that.. inners might be ok. but havent cut it off yet!

Will probably concentrate on just cleaning up more metal prior to welding.

made a start on welding it up, spent a lot of time pissing around with gaps, then spent more time burning holes than welding, damn subaru and cheap metal.

Will be cheating on the other side now.. All the top of the passenger front door is spot welded in.. lower sill to do, A post to do. B post to complete.. and rear door nearly done..

Then take doors back off and do the lower edge.

Need to buy some more body filler as the stuff I had has gone off. And Ive got a feeling the tin's going to be too small! Best buy some 2 Pack Stopper too. Thank **** though for 2 pack filler primer

Very interesting thread I'll be another avid follower on this one, I take it you will never be moving house then David ? imagine that

Similar to you guys I was lucky with my father as well, he passed away 4 years ago now but when he was working he was a signwriter and artist so I picked up many skills for about the house mainly and I have to say a good eye for detail but like Kilo I'm not much good under the bonnet but I am learning little bits as I go along and I'm 39 I do respect my limitations though and I've only recently started buying some decent tools as well

David if I can just make a suggestion have you considered a Type R style roof vent ? I'm assuming your throwing the air con in the skip there.... be a shame to miss an opportunity now the shell is still a work in progress.
Always good to get some extra fresh air in the car.

nah.. adds weight, cost and not required.. UK car doesnt have aircon anyway. (my silver one is a UK car)

Also buggers the aerodynamics.. windows may still open, undecided yet.

Ron, if you're ditching the glasswork then you might as well ditch the screen pillars and roof, using the roof skin to weld over the now opened up deck and turn it into a speedster...

You only need one opening window for the road (drivers for car park tickets) but I'm not sure about the rules for motorsport, but I think all windows can be sealed.
Trouble is the Marshal's might like to use the roof chopper on your car to let you out..back to the speedster.

Glass is very heavy, so glass screen and plastic for the rest, there's another 5Kg I bet. (can be done on a frameless car.)

Sill fully welded.. bit of tidying to do..

Straighten bottom edge, patch hole in arch and fill welds properly.. filled quickly and sanded with 40 and 120 grit then just primed incase I decide to get on with the rest of the car, at least the wont rust.
