top gear, jc crashes into a hedge !!
Could it maybe have had a chassis from a newer car as part of a repair or restoration ? Then the car would be A reg as far as the VIN plates are concerned even if everything else is earlier - only way I can think that explains it.

Could be Import and was given an age related plate on the year it was registered in this country?
Many ex-miltary Landrovers (lightweights in particular) go around sporting plates dating from the mid 1980's when they were built in the 70's. Mine originally had a 1976/77 "R" plate, yet it was built in 1969.
I later had it re-registered as a 1969 "G" reg to qualify for tax exemption
