rac advert makes me laugh, saying that it'll cost you 3 grand to get your petrol car running again after putting diesel in by mistake and then trying to start the car.
a friend done this (she's blonde btw) and it cost her about £100 to get it sorted.
surely even in a diluted amount it'd make it run a bit on the rough side wouldn't it?

LOL
Seriously, I would like to see the evidence that it does not harm anything before trying such an odd action.

Look at mileage
Check sales receipt and see how much was bought
Calculate mpg (in my head normally as I drive along)
It has been roughly 30mpg around town ...... 35-40mpg on a 100+ mile run
Now, it 'appears' to be about 18mpg it could actually be as low as 14mpg but I am awaiting the light to pop on, then I will know for sure.
Whatever ................... something is happening - I can drive 10 miles and the gauge has dropped!! thats never happened before!

This maybe a bit sad, but I set up a spreadsheet to monitor and calculate all the MPG, litres, prices, range etc. I've done it for around 10-15 tank fulls at the moment. It also lists what I have been doing during that tank, like motorway driving or going on holiday with 4 people and a boot full of luggage.
It is quite suprizing the difference between different fuels in terms of MPG. I've generally found that BP Ultimate is very good, as is Texaco and Esso Ultimate. Optimax isn't very good at all, getting the lowest MPG of all. I haven't tried Tesco or Sainsburys yet but I think its worth it for a comprehensive list.
Just put in a tank full of Total Excellum in last night and I'll see what that stuff is like.
If anybody wants a copy of the spreadsheet, PM me and i'll be more than happy to send it too you.
If you do want to calculate your mileage, I do it like this;
Fill up when about 3/4's empty.
Get a full receipt with all the price of fuel, litres, price per litre.
Write down your mileage at that moment on the receipt.
Then, the next time you fill up, repeat above.
Minus the new miles by the old miles to work out how much you've used
Divide the NEW MILES by the OLD GALLONS/LITRES.
(to get UK gallons, multiply litres by 0.22)
As a side, I usually get from 25-33 MPG, but I don't trash it at all. In fact I'm very careful.
Hope this helps
Regards
Andy

Why have any of you obsesses with MPG bought a car designed to take as much air in as possible and pass out the exhaust as quickly as possible?
Why not buy a Subaru Sport and fit a VW TDi engine??
I will confirm however that my wifes modified UK300 (285BHP) can when on a run driven at around 70-75 return aprox 32 MPG, but no more, when she drives it correctly she gets around 26-28 MPG, my modified JDM spec gets no more than 24MPG but this is probably partially due to close ratio box and me having FUN!!!
Get a grip, S U B A R U built for speed not economy

Fuel Consumption
Range can be fantastic I know.
UK WRX Unmodified, struggling around 28 MPG, apart from long constant low speed, then 29.5MPG. 25 MPG is a good average.
UK WRX with CATS removed, decent K&N Panel Filter and remap to 98 Octane/97 will give a range of 21.5-32.5MPG depending how car is driven, obviously the improved efficiency can convert to MPG or performance.
WRX on trackdays expec 11MPG if driven hard
My STi is around 23MPG on road and 7.5 MPG on a trackday
Looking forward to Tesco Fuel in the midlands when it arrives, will reset the ECU thou to ensure the fuelling is ok

I had thought I was getting lower mpg with Tesco 99 RON so I ran a test recently. 05 WRX PPP. Air temp was ca. 7-9 degrees. 100 miles of Friday mid-day M25 at 80-85; 10 on slow country lanes; 10-15 round town; 15 mile blast on quick, twisty A road; 60 miles on mid-day Saturday M25 at 60-70 mph.
Result: 32.5 mpg overall = about what I was getting on Optimax. I find pick-up is not quite as good with Tesco as with Optimax.
BTW, I'm not pslewis!

Some on here just cannot fathom that 35mpg is at all achievable - it would appear that plenty of 'sensible' drivers are returning 30+ figures regularly.
And the operative word is 'sensible' ........... if you drive like a **** then you will get ****** returns on your fuel!!
