Thanks for the more mature replies from people who know where I'm coming from, most obviously the people with brains!

Thanks for the post of sites for where to get info on viruses from, I usually do do a search on whatever virus is going around, but didn't have time earlier.

As for OllyK, do you think I'm thick?? I have done 4 computer courses in the past 3 years and passed all of them, so I do know what I'm doing and I also know that people usually inform others of viruses or other computer related probs, if it is something that will make a person lose things they need or something that is going to cause them hassle. Some of us LIKE to help others.

Hi Julz, Hi Olly

Not being funny Julz but I have done 4 computer courses in the past 3 years and passed all of them, so I do know what I'm doing really doesn't mean a lot on here. 4 computer courses in what? Word, excel, email, etc.? Could you build a server, could you write your own dll, could you write a thread safe multi threaded unix app, etc.? Computing is a huge field these days and in writing the above you are only leaving yourself open for people to snipe at you (which I'm hoping this is not read as such! ).

My missus' mother has a GNVQ in computing.....she knows f' all about computing and computer maintenance.....

Me, I spend far too much of my time in front of one and have done for the past 20 odd years, which again, depending on what those twenty years were spent doing, could count for jack $hit

Olly, can see what you were saying, but it did come across a little severe this time Prefer your more serious posts

Chill out dudes

Not all viruses have a destructive payload, i.e. delete your files etc, but I wouldn't recommend leaving any on your PC. Quite a few are badly written and either don't do what they were designed to and so are pretty much harmless or worse a harmless(ish) one becomes desctructive.

I constantly run adaware..windows beta and bt yahoo anti vius /spyware and norton sytematic(or simular) and it pulls up dialers, hijackers, trojans, purity scans and loads of cookie things and when i delete then they come straight back when the computor is switched off and back on again.i have never open emails from unknowns so what the hells going on?

powerman
Sounds to me like you have some memory resident viruses that, re-write themselves back to disk if you delete the files off. You'd need to look up each one on the Symantec (or similar) website and see if there are any special tools / instructions for removal. Some are a real pig to get rid of and require manual intervention if the virus has actually been executed.

As for Adware - it isn't harmful (unless written badly) but it is a PITA getting **** popups or having your PC constantly trying to dial out. It's worth setting IE to not allow Install on Demand etc, and certainly not automatically.

I did apologise in post 10 if I was being harsh on a newbie. I admit that I assumed that somebody with over 400 posts would have got past the reflex spamming stage.

Well sorry for me thinking I was being helpful, now I realise everyone else is so much brainier, I mean come on give me some credit I'm only 21 and female at that! The blonde could have some small part to play, but I'll leave that decision up to you. Everyone learns from there mistakes, so now I've learnt not to post about this, so instead of shooting people down straight away, just explain it instead.

You sure a BBS is the best place for you as it sounds like you take things far too personally. Plenty of people know more about things than me, doesn't bother me though. Why resort to playing the 'I'm female' card?

My missus knows much more about virus guff and technical bits than me, I'm just a lowly software engineer so I get all my maintenance tips from her. She never needs to play the female card though

I don't take it personally, I already know theres some ***** on here

The thing I'm trying to get at is, people shoot you down in flames straight away, without explaining why not to post on a certain topic etc etc, I wouldn't have minded if the first person to reply had said in a better manner about why I was posting it, or I shouldn't have posted it etc, the way it came across was a bit harsh and uncalled for. I don't always play the female card, just when some **** tries to have a go and put me down who obviously thinks they are 10 times better than everyone else, or who thinks they are replying to a male who has posted, not all usernames are obvious of what sex you are, and people reply in different ways depending if you are male or female. Shame really.

I agree, don't think there was any need for Olly to be so patronising.

21, blonde, female eh?

Fancy coming round mine and I'll show you it in all it's glory. I mean IT in all it's glory

Ok then...

IT can be a handfull, but with a bit of patience it is actually very easy to grasp.

There's a lot to take in though, so it's best to take IT a little bit at a time.
