500+ bhp/lbft 22B

Usually people have an exaggerated view of the value of their car.I don't think thats the case here. A good 22b with history is still worth between £22-£25k. This car must have min £15k of extras, an extra £5k for that in not unreasonable. That puts it at circa £30k.
#34
Thanks Deep,
Try more like 30k of extras!
Ecu alone comes in at around 3k fitted!
Steve,
Wasn't joking about 355. If she sells, that is what I will look at, if she doesn't, that is what I will start saving for to sit next to the 22B.
The 355 is going to feel painfully slow after the 22B, so having the best of both worlds won't upset me at all! Plus if having a family in the not too distant, it might be nice to retain the 4 seats.

hi adam,
i would be very keen to see the full spec and pictures, i really thought i would never return to subaru ownership as i had a gr8 type r and thought nothing would beat that, however i am being forced by my company to buy a car. its either a 22b or a 993c2 so i could be interested.
can you pm or email the details of yours.
cheers

John, you are probably right about selling it. We'll see.
Love the idea of keeping it. will wait to see what it is like in final spec.
I can't reduce the output, it is pointless, too much has gone into the engine to not use its potential.
It is very drivable and on top of that, its not as if 500bhp gets used all the time in everyday driving.
The sale will remain a fluid proposition and I will certainly readdress things when I complete the finishing touches which should be in the next week or so.

I think the last time I properly saw your car was about 4 years ago! when you brought it round to Bobs in Malmesbury just after you'd bought it (but maybe I've seen it since - is it externally radically different?)
Fair enough on the 355 - I was looking myself at a bigger litre Porsche, but tbh I dont know what I want. I have the money, although its a case of 'do I pay the huge mortgage down or do I put a fair bit of money into another car
For me..... I have not reached the point where I have 'too much power' so I certainly wouldnt want to 'trade down on Power', although saying that I drive an Ecutekked wrx2004 as well which is abysmally slow................ in comparison to my 99sti5
and I still owe you a meal from about a year ago!
Good luck with the sale. I'm sure the car will be perfect for someone. Theres about 20 or so of us out there who have spent quite a lot of money on Scoobs and its like a second wife!

I remember the day at bobs, but I don't recall you owing me any meals!
If you are around this neck of the woods again, would be happy to collect on that one though.
I would far rather buy a 355 aswell, I still havent had the fun in the car that it and i deserve so would rather hang on to it long enough until I get bored. Trouble is nothing affordable, other than the 355 appeals to me more than the 22B.
only time will tell I guess.
Visually it looks exactly the same as any other 22B, although the condition is probably better than most if not all.
Graham, when the last stage of modding is finished (some little touches left - like refitting the engine! after putting in a more sympathetic clutch), I will put up a full set of comprehensive pictures and perhaps even a spec list.
trouble is most people get bored before getting to the end as it tends to go on a bit.

Never been in a 355, and I don't "get" the old Ferrari thing, but the one I saw on the dragstrip used in anger made a fantastic noise - it sounded like I imagined a hysterical Italian woman would sound like! But I found myself laughing as the time was very ordinary after all that drama.

Remember I was round with Pat that time for lunch when you were at work? - maybe you were treating all of us!
And you showed me the small house that your parents live in (you know the one - that small place on a dodgy road................)

Adam: I don't get bored reading spec lists (do it as a day job).
Look forward to it.
Many 355/348/etc hill climb in a different class to me at the same meetings, and I can beat them all but one, and he is about 2 seconds ahead of me on semi race tyres, but do they ever look good, drive superbly and the sound............................
A 355 seems a Good Thing to me.
Nearly as good as the 700 bhp Audi Quattro's.
Graham.

graham,
thanks for the vote of confidence on the 355!
fyi,
Short Block:
2.2 standard closed deck block complete with oil squirters relinered with 4mm thick top hat liners to 100mm bore.
three layer steel 2.5 head gasket
increased stroke taken to 79mm by farnden billet forged crank with cross drilled oil ways, this alone was £1500
ACL big end and main bearings
PAR rods
custom spec JE pistons with teflon friction coat.
compression ratio of 8.4:1
currently undecided about which sump it will have, either standard or a bewinged wrc sump
Heads:
flowed and ported by SMG tuning
DH22 cams specced by kent by reprofiling standard sti3 cams (larger starting base circle)
custom billet valves for increased temperature handling when running circa 600bp
custom double springing with titanium top hat lifters
6 prodrive 14mm head studs on each head
kent vernier cam pulleys
gas flowed inlet manifold running in reversed direction for shortened pipework length
custom cncd fuel rails now running 4 modified 550 injectors.
Engine peripherals:
SX fuel pressure regulator
custom slip jointed 2 inch uppipe and race gate external wastegate rated to 900bhp.
Lateral performance garret gt30r turbo with 0.63 housing good for 500bhp and 530lbft (possibly significantly more torque).
The engine has happily been run at 2.2 bar without any signs of trouble.
The wastegate rejoins custom downpipe to make for an impreza as quiet as any other during normal driving.
The car runs no dumpvalve and makes great noises to prove it!
Lateral performance front mounted intercooler - loses air con but avoids cutting into the £3500 bumper! also provides exceptionally short pipework particularly when inlet manifold reversed.
surfaces discharge spark plugs run from msd ignition amplifier (bypassable)
Air injectors coupled to ecu give incredible boost control!
Pectel T6 2000 ecu (with knock control - not set up) - this is my favourite mod! This unit alone is around £3500 installed with complete wiring looms and wide band lambda control. It allows an unbelievable number of control parameters for accurate mapping as well as safety cut outs so it can kill the engine if any monitored parameter gets too high.
Also allows in car driver controlled (via a ****) premapped switchable boost control.
runs a driver controlled switch for engaging two completely different maps for available fuel.
To my knowledge mine is the only road going impreza running a pectel where the ecu is aware of the oil pressures and oil temperature, allowing it to keep an eye of the values for you to let you get on with the driving.
Note the ecu runs with a loom adapter so the car can be returned to standard wiring set up by simply unplugging it. Note: standard ecu supplied with car will not run the engine though!
Mocal 13 row oil cooler hidden in wing, supplied by air from brake duct in bumper.
Oil primer system allows the car to build oil pressure before the engine is turned over. also means it need not be subjected to the start up procedure when oil changing.
Primer pump can empty the entire system within about 6 seconds!
Also driver controlled via switch in centre console.
Gearing on car has been changed to run UK gear ratios with 3.9 final drive ratio. This gives gearing to 200mph+, which turbo dependent isn't unobtainable. Given the torque of the engine from the 5 speed gearbox, the higher gearing is much better suited than the standard type r ratios.
The gearbox is a five speed PAR synchro kit which hasn't missed a beat, though the car has not been subjected to standard quarter mile launches as can normally be expected from a 500bhp 10 second capable car.
The clutch is an exede twin plate with its own lightweight flywheel, this has the action of a standard clutch but can contain the torque.
The exhaust centre section and backbox area scoobymania straight through 3 inch, These produce a very nice but far from loud sound and fit the odd cut out in the 22B bumper better than any other exhaust system I have seen.
Two tank mounted warlboro fuel pumps to reduce increased noise associated with extra fuel pumps. These are relay controlled. An extra supply pipe has been installed in the same location as the standard fuel pipes for the return from the fuel rails. This allowed the standard return to be used as another supply. This has made for a very clean fuelling install which can easily be returned to standard.
I am getting tired now so I have to stop.

Fangoria: I'm from the West Midlands. You get out of Snet what you put in, so I have an interest in many areas of the Impreza.
Adam:
Your spec is too much.
I can only imagine the ability of the car in a hill climb situation with so much torque and a box that could tolerate slicks.
You can loan it to me for 'development work' when it is running
Many thanks. Just the pictures now!
Graham.

funnily enough graham, the gearbox is likely to be the biggest weakpoint on the car!
The PARs have been known to break at around this torque level, even those from the better batch (which mine is) which seemed to last substantially longer than the initial failures.
Mine hasn't had the abuse that some of those have which caused them to break.
If it were to go, I would probably replace the broken gears with those made by ppg as a replacement. They are louder but tougher. Straight cut first does sound great though, as do semi straight third and fourth.
Other option is the forester six speed, but this would meen getting hold of a later DCCD too and would add over 50kg to the weight of the car, plus I am not convinced that even those ratios are long enough.
Ideally I would like these same ratios, equivalent to a UK classic and a long sixth geared to say 250mph for quiet cruising.

Hill climb racing is not too bad on a box, and my V3 trans is still there despite warnings.( 380 x 360)

A 50Kg increase is crazy for the 6 speeder.
Sorry Adam, drifted the thread from the Sale of the car...

ffs don't sell her- you'll regret it, and even if you find a replacement somewhere down the line it won't be the same.
sell a kidney or something instead (apologies to Dr Banks, can see you frowning already )
