15/40, or 15/50 Mobil ?

Yes, I think the thick oil could cause an issue, based on it being fine before the oil change.

Sorry to hear it didn't work. Did you let the engine/oil get hot ? takes about 15 mins of driving in this weather.

Hope you sort it.

i would expect low compression if it was a sticking valve.

Anyways, next question... do you have a boost gauge or one you can borrow.
See if the needle fluctuates rapidly on idle.

I think you need to deal with the CEL before you carry on mate...

Here is a update chaps:

I have called round a mate who has given it the going over and he beleives it has either a bent valve or damaged valve.

He disconnected one of the Coil Packs...the one near the ABS unit and the car run the same

Anyone know how much this will cost me? anyone fancy the job? would it be cheaper to get another engine?

That 2 statements don't go together, sticking valve and good compression add onto that one cylinder not working.

Big ends, broken cam shaft, knackered follower?

The nearside of my engine sounds much noisier than the offside, and at least once a day I get a big knock spike on my Power FC display. The weird - or perhaps not so weird - thing is that it's never under any particular load when it happens. It happens either at low revs, hardly any throttle, just tickling along in traffic, OR on the overrun whatever the speed i.e. a sudden lifting off of the accelerator, and more often when engine braking downhill.

Does this sound like a sticky valve could be causing a knock spike to be picked up?

mine does the same with regards to the spiking, seem to get less "noise" on full throttle, yet idling I can get high teens.

Weird. Do you get sudden unannounced spikes, or is it 'spiky' all the time on idle? Mine is very well behaved mostly, you can have a completely flat low level knock reading at 4, then suddenly you will get a huge spike of 40, a straight vertical line for just an instant. Then it carries on flat just like before, as if nothing happened. The rest of the time it does exactly what I'd expect - low level flat trace on low revs or easy driving, busier spikier trace on high revs or high boost.
