Sorry to hear you bought from the AppleStore, you will get much better service form one of the major resellers generally. Although Apple service the ipods themselves unfortunately.
We sell undreds iof not thousands a week and still have very few problems but most of our customers are Mac users.
It's hardly rocket science.
p.s. I've downgraded the firmware, re-upgraded again, and so far I've not had the battery problem again. It's beginning to look like the original firmware upgrade I did a couple of weeks ago might have not applied itself 100% correctly...

I'm on my 4th iPod in 12 months, basically because they are such cool devices and I've had to buy every version released.
No problems with any of them and I treat them quite badly.

I'm sure its easy to blame the MS/PC side of things, but I've used loads of other electronic devices (external hard disks, other mp3 players, cameras, etc..) and not had as many problems.
Personally I'd blame the Apple Windows developers

I'm an Apple Reseller and since the iPod came out, have only seen a couple of failed units.
One iPod in particular gave me a lot of grief so in the end I stuck it in the drawer and left it there for a few weeks to let the battery completely drain out. A few weeks later I took it out, plugged it into the mains and hey presto it sprang into life.
If your iPod is still under warranty, get it over to a service centre for them to repair it.

My Brother works for a reseller here in Scotland, so I get real-life stories about Apple products and they're not all faultless - nothing ever is mind you. It didn't stop me wanting an iPod; Forewarned is Forearmed and all that, but I'm still annoyed at the hassle its given me. My first venture into the Apple 'lifestyle' hasn't been the best experience to date.
Still its good to get the balance, so hopefully peoples good experiences will outweigh the bad.

I'm not trying to say the iPod is faultless, I've had a niggle with mine, but I had a warranty there if I needed it, and once the warranty is up, well, depending on the problem, it could be a trip to Apple, or, if it's battery related, then a nice new, higher capacity battery from a third party.
Apple kit isn't perfect, we've trashed two original TiBooks, and I've seen a nice little room full of about 100 ibooks (clamshell and the next revision) which have been trashed, and they haven't exactly been used that much. Having said that, the G4 by my feet is at least 5 years old and it's going strong, only things I have done to it are add more RAM and upgrade the hard drive.

Don't know anything about the 'old' Ipods but if you're thinking of an Ipod Nano... Just got mine and three days later it's scratched to ****. Put it in a soft pocket with nothing else in it - it scratches. Got a calloused thumb - yup, that scratches it too. Thought Apple were the Masters of Design! Apart from that and a few bugs importing Outlook contacts and calendar, it's lovely!
