Classics too me will always be the TRUE impreza shape, just as a mk1/11 escort is a real escort.
Although, I now own an MY03 car, and although not the same, is truly a gorgeous car to me..... its the slightly normal look mixed with a menacing attitude that does it for me.

I have looked at EVERY Bug-Eye picture posted here and, while I appreciate that you have spent £1000's trying to make it look good, I'm sorry it just does NOT look good.
The Classic is the one, looks great, is faster, holds its values better, etc. etc.

I always loved the looks of the classic and was mortified when I first saw the bugeye at the nec motorshow, strange thing is that when I eventually came to buying a scooby I couldnt buy a classic because I thought it looked too dated compared to the new models, ended up buying a bugeye with the morette conversion already done, the classic just looks and is a bit dated for me.

Bugeye -a face only a mother could love. That Subaru were forced to do a premature update tells you all you need to know. Not to mention the fact they are slow enough to be matched by a diesel in real world driving.

The truth is the bug-eye didn't sell well and they needed an updated version to try and improve sales!!
I guess its good news if you like that shape as you can pick up a bargain!

The standard one he talks of would, IMHO beat (or match) ALL production Impreza models, current and past.

The original shape or 'classic' as some people have selfishly called it was a fast, reliable but seriouly ugly, noisy and uncomfortable car, add to that it's now verging on embarrasing due to it's max power reputation. I knew it was time for it to go when a girlfriend accused me of driving a Hyundai Accent!
I drove my old shape hard from 98-2001, it was worth pennys when I'd finished with it as my 'bugeye' is now. The difference is I can see myself keeping the current car as it's still such a nice, fast and rare motor.
As for the fast replacement, yes it only lasted 2-3 years, same as the surgically enhanced 'blobeye'. For sales figures take a look around on your next trip out, I think you'll find sales improved drastically with the introduction of the 'new age' models both hear and more importantly in the US.

get a picture of a bug eye, put your hand over it so only the very front is shown, then ask a mate what car it is.. they may reply ford Ka or something like
Bug eye is a better car than the classic in everyday terms but its just a huge **** up on the styling front, the Blob eye is far better looking IHMO.

I think there is a wide range to be had between '****e' and 'stunning'. Doesn't need to be one or the other, although a bug would quite happily be classed as the former category.
To me the V5/6 classics are the best looking and have the required updates over earlier models. They might not be the prettiest of cars, but they have a presence about them.

I've had both classic and bug eye. My de-catted classic was the faster than the PPP'd bug eye and the classic was rarer at the time, as was the impreza in general. But now am saving for a flat i've got a 172 cup to do me in the mean time. My point is (Flame suit!) once i've got my flat I can't wait to go out and buy myself a PPP'd, White Sti 7 with morret conversion. Had a shot of my dads mate's decatted one and have been in love ever since. Only other thing i would change is the bloody stearing wheel as it's to bloody big!
But by the time i head out and buy one i'll prob get a blob eye!
It's a love or hate thing, like the **** on the new megane!
cheers

The question asked was "what's wrong with the bugeye"
so far we have in no particular order
1. It looks ****e
2. It's relatively slow
3. It depreciates like a stone
4. It's expensive to run
5. Rasher likes them
