Hi Mo Mo & sorry to hear of your impending NIP.

There is a chance that at the moment specified they were not taking a reading. I once sped up out of a side-road into a 40mph zone & accelerated to 50 as the idiot (in front of whom I had plenty of space) leathered it the minute I pulled out. I passed the target point for a mobile speed camera just at that moment, but there was no warning from my detector (which picks up laser & radar) and no subsequent NIP.

The two websites below may be of some use. The second one is especially interesting as it holds a list of UK prosecution examples. 61/60mph in a 30mph got 2 and 1 week bans respectively, but the information higher up the page implies that although a court appearance is almost certain, a ban of a month-a year doesn't become likely until 36mph over the limit (which means your speedo would be reading about 70-75mph probably).

http://www.carnet.co.uk/carlaw/home/...-speeding.html

http://www.speed-trap.co.uk/Accused_...eedVSFines.htm

Anyway, good luck,

Phil

BTW - 104.6mph in a 50...now that is taking the p...!! Only 3 months ban as well!!!

If you were doing 60 past the van then you were not doing 60 when the operator took the reading(s). Depending on the set up of the camera and how quick the operator was the closest reading that can be taken is about 30m (the laser will operate closer but its unlikley that the operator would be set up for that). So I guess you are looking at 45-50mph? Wait for the NIP I suppose.

serega - I have seen people pinged with a laser and the print out shows a nice clear picture, the speed....... 130+ (not seen it often but it happens).

There are all sorts of unmanned cameras on the motorways too, GATSOs and SPECS etc - tend to be in road works though. No idea what the max speed these have recoreded people at though!

Think Top Gear did a test last year with various cars.
Something like a Porsche gt sailed through at 176mph, camera didn't even flash let alone think there was anything there ;-)
Not sure about the mobile vans set up though.

freind of mine was caught doing 63 in a 30 on his CBR 600
he got a 14 day ban and some points
as it ment he would lose his job and he had a kid to pay for so they went easy on him

GATSO's don't work over 168mph I believe......

Silly question, but which way was the van facing? They point the laser/camera out the back so you would need to be approaching the rear to get done.......and as already said it's pointed way down the road so if you accelerated quickly then you were probably already too close to target.

But 60+ in a 30.........I have no sympathy for that.

Apparently the cameras can't pick you up over 160mph and you would be going faster than any Police Helicopter!

IIRC a Japanese guy hired a ferrari when he was over here and was caught doing that kind of speed on the A1M and was jailed.

Dont give much for your chances. Better resist the temptation to say you were familiarising yourself with your car like that copper did and got away with it!

Quote then reply, quote then reply...

Now you say it...

As for 60+ in a 30, you deserve what's coming your way, I'm afraid.

It doesnt take guts to own up to it on a forum like this because you get a raft of idiots sympathising with the perpatrator offering advise and likes to sites that "might help"...
This burk screws off up the road up to 65ish in a 30mph zone ffs... Hopefully it will be a 12month ban and tasty fine with publicity in his local papers relating to his punishment, so to spread the message that auditions for the fast and the furious 3 will not be tolerated on Englands roads!

Check to see what exact date it was sent and whether its 1st or 2nd class.

If its 2nd class let me know and I'll point you in the right direction.

Re doing 180 on the motorway - wouldnt bet money on getting away from the chopper - all they need to do is get close enough to zoom in on your number plate and film you between a couple of set points and that would be enough to prove it.

As for over 60 in a 30 ? personally I think it is out of order, just because you're not going to have time to brake if a kid runs out - check out how far a car travels in 1 second doing 60 and it'll scare you...

As I understand it a NIP MUST arrive in 14 calender days for a prosecution to occur. If it takes longer than that then the prosecution can be successfully challenged. I would point out, however, that if you are not the registered owner this doesn't exactly apply - the registered owner must be contacted in 14 days, but it may take longer before you are.

They have 14 days from the date of the offence to get the NIP/S172 to the registered owner, once the registered owner has completed the S172 to say who was driving the $camera partnership has a 6 month 'window' to contact you and lay papers with the magistrates.

If the owner receives the S172/NIP outside of the 14 days then PM me and I can point you towards your next course of action - DO NOT THROW THE NIP/S172 ENVELOPE AWAY.

Gutted you've not be prosecuted yet ... Will keep my fingers crossed though... Here's hoping that if you do get done, you'll be man enough to take the punishment on the chin and not be a poof by going down the line that Bottomfeeder will be advising you to take...
If you cant do the time dont do the crime shamon.
