Help with choosing a new dog ?
#61
please tell them to consider a rescue dog - I do some work for the following site;
www.dogpages.org.uk
There's 100's of dogs that need homes, many who have full history etc so your parents will know exactly what they are getting. The biggest plus point is that they will always have the back up of the rescue if they do have any problems with the dog and if anything changes the dog is always expected to be returned to the rescue home.
Loads of deserving dogs on there, including specific breeds if they have their heart set on a particular dog. I will vote for the Heinz 57 as we've had 3 and they have all been amazing dogs and none of the health problems you now get with many pedigree dogs!
If you want any more info please just PM me.

In fact, I'm sure its Alex. - make a mistake somewhere did we with all the logins boys?
Honestly, you guys are worse than Nacro....
In any event, I'm sure that the (and lets be fair here, no one really knows what happens when you/your pets die - but for some its nice to have a "belief" be that Heaven/hell/Rainbow Bridge whatever) afterlife is devoid of the prejudices held elsewhere
Your constant attempts to seek to ridicule me with the whole rainbow bridge thing is rather amusing. You guys have such paranoia about proving your macho sexuality, don't you? I think sometimes you all (and I use the term carefully) protest too much.
Still, its what you'd expect from a collective of homophobes that believe women have no place except the bedroom and the kitchen...
Anyway, if you had half a brain between you (which is surprising, given that Alex can be reasonably intelligent sometimes) you'd be able to figure out that while 99% of Rottweiler attacks will be reported and be jumped on by the media exercising those same prejudices, there are many, many attacks by small dogs which do not get reported.
Its hardly rocket science and hence your google search figures are skewed.
It is an irrefutable fact known by doctors and vets that small dogs inflict more bite wounds than large dogs, and that black labs are way higher on the list for bites than the so called devil dogs such as Rotties, GSD's and Dobermans
Its also widely recognised by vets and animal trainers and behaviorists that smaller dogs are more likely to start a fight with other dogs than larger breeds.
It can only be encouraging that people like you are prejudiced against the larger, more "public" breeds. The less tossers that own them, the better

greyhounds are trained to run fast
everything else takes a backseat
as long as it runs the trainers do not care
i would recomend dropping the greyhound idea

Bad dogs in every breed mate
I personally know of 4 rescues that are the most placid, well natured dogs I have ever known.
I would never recommend anything based on one example.
To be honest, they should get down to a rescue centre and get the dog that suits them best.
Or get another westie, a breed they know.

no presumptions at all.
original poster wanted a dog the size of a westie
EBT is unsuitble (in every sense)
Mini EBT is also unsuitable (although a better size)

Really, there was no need to launch into a character assassination ... homophope this, misogynist that! I am sure as an ex moderator that you appreciate the politeness to the thread originator to keep the thread on track old boy, even if your preferred breed of hound eat children!

Correct me if Im wrong but Beagles are very energetic dogs even later if life and for an ageing couple it might not be the best thing, To be honest aside all the great dogs suggested theyre maybe better off looking for something placid and calm, happy with a stroll round the block rather than an hours walk in a field everynight like a springer spaniel etc

I've lived with an EBT constantly for the last 32 years. Standards and minis, nutters and crufts entrants......well over 20 dogs in total.

I have had 2 bulldogs and an GSD before I got my EBT and I would recommend the breed to anyone. Agreed, maybe not the best dog for a retired couple but I wouldnt knock the breed or wish her dead (even when she crapped on the new carpet). A bulldog would be good for a retired person as mine were right lazy sods who hated going for walks. But in all good advise on the rescue homes, most dogs deserve second chances.

a) no have i have never recommended one............i have never seen a post on here where i thought it was right to.......this thread is a prime example.
b) you (like the wackjob that PM'd me begging for the dogs life) seem to think i really want my dog dead....i dont, but it is a huge pain in the **** as many EBT can be. WHile there are MANY +'ves to an EBT there are also some HUGE negatives. I belive the same +'ves could be achived by the old couple in question here with a better suited dog that doesnt have the negatives of an EBT.
T
now wheres that rat poison?

and thats the problem with SN.
people with EVOs tell someone who needs a fiesta they need an EVO
the steroid monkies tell the bloke after a good chest routine he needs lots of gear
people with EBT tell little old ladies they need one instead of a westie!
People should love the extreem choices they make without suggesting everyone does the same.

I never took you seriously, I knew there was a sense of comedy in the post. Im not sure anyone who has the ***** to kill a dog would keep 1 anyhow for a reasonable amount of time.... Im just saying its not something people really joke about though...

Pound for pound you will not get another breed as powerful.
They are one of the most affectionate breeds you can get and one
of only 2 breeds that the KC says is good with children (Known as the nanny dog).
My stafford is now 10 Month's old (No pic's i'm at work !) and he is not a lap dog, he's too bloody heavy.

Blackadder - PM is fine, site is well worth a look but I can point you in the direction of some of the better resuce homes in your parents area. Normal procedure is find a dog that suits (or even better a pair) and then the rescue will arrange for a home check to be done. If all goes well parents and dog can become a happy family ASAP. Don't be put off by the dog being 100's of miles away as we all chip in and help arrange transport if needed.

That doesn't stop the "advice" being given, but it should be taken with a bucket of salt

Thanks Coopz
Diablo, i agree with what you just said above but i'm not going to dismiss many of the comments already posted just because i dont personally know them. Some really good breeds have been put forward and indeed in every breed there will be "black sheep" but you have to go with what and how the breed react inherantly
Rizla posted up a good link to the Norfolk Terrier which has been taken seriously and also a few users comments on re-homing and coopz's offer of help are just 2 points i have taken seriously, along with many others
but not the hamster or gerbil one

tiggs you stagger me your posts about your dog didnt strike me as funny in the least and perhaps you should rethink your unique wit
(or lack of) before you post such emotive stuff on dogs
i certainly didnt think you had lived with ebts for 32 yrs
i seem to remember you posting about how your dog ate a can of dog food in the can and that you had been gifted it and didnt care for the animal
to be honest i suspected the poor beast led a terrible existance with you as its owner
