Powerstation approached me and I made that clear in the outset.

They wanted some feed-back on AST's used to an extreme by someone who would report clearly. My written word is poor, but I sure can talk about them (just ask Rob!).

I wrote/write posative comments on them because it is what I found to be true.
Getting the best (for me/hill climbing) has been an absolute joy over the last 18 months, the best bit about the car and worth a lot of bhp.

Powerstation have sold a lot of kits maybe as a result of my exploits/reports.
The 3 ways came the same way to move the game on.

They could 'recall' them at any time as the units are all theirs.

I hope they do not as they ARE fab.

I would only fit the brace if the suspension bushes are solid (ie not rubber) as although the lower brace stiffens things it is all a bit lost if the rubber bushes are shimmying about everywhere.
Solid bushes are a mixed blessing and I for one would not bother with that heap of work ever again, although bushes elsewhere sure do work well.

Cornerweighting is a very good thing to do, and my car does not have it done.
My old 911 was weighted for when I started to go 'fast' (a relative term for me) ; doing a 61.8 up Prescott in the 911 is a bloody fast feeling...and it made a huge difference in the feel of the car changing direction.

Every little helps, and AndyF has a 'many a mickle makes a Muckle' phrase, but he does come north of the Wall...

I have a few tweeks in mind for the suspension over the winter as I will need a zillion mickles to try to keep up with you and Pete.

What I will add though is I'm not sure if the mods I have made to my Sti are really right for hill climbing, but I knew very little about them when I started out, just experiences with my UK Turbo Company Car which seemed bloody fast with 207 bhp....

I wish I was starting again now!

Best way to fully inspect a car is to wash it all over, inc the dirty bits (in your case the grassy bits!)

No Dialynx Audi at Curborough tommorrow, when they fired it up it blew the starter motor.

 

How weird is that?
If the weather is dry i will go anyway just to run the old 911 a bit.

Apparently it was the wrong starter ring fitted, which means not a thing to me, but it is a shame.

The starter ring had 2 too many teeth on it and needs machining. Roger was there for a play in the Sunbeam and broke a drive shaft...but he is over the moon with the Audi. It does sound fab to say the least. Over 6 feet wide in the front!
Rumour is it will not be in our class?

Roy was ther class win of course. He makes 33 secs look so easy.
Roger Beard was there in the oh-so-nice EvoII and getting used to 4 x 4 and spinning off at times!

I have a choice of directions to go, just resisting the urge to do it now so i can keep a little closer to you and Pete next year.
I think you will both rocket ahead of the game, and we will see how far Roy is actually in front (rather how well his car is).

Big big question is what is Roy going to do?

I think he will re-turbo/map the thing or walk away.
Didn't have a chance to talk to him at the Midland do, but he may well be pondering the game with Pete around.

I think the EVO is miles better as a base car for hill climbing, and I'm really not sure if the Impreza can hope to match it.
This task will be down to you and Paul 'Zen' to chase.

I am sure you both have an evil plan hatched.

The evo is without doubt the best base car, but I'm really happy with how my car has turned out, it is a bit close to the limit of the intercooler, injectors etc. at the moment (which is what I asked Paul to do for the last 5 races of the season) so those things will definatley need addressing over the winter, then I'm a bit stuck as to what to do. I think the thing that has made my car so quick for its low power out put is the sub 1200kgs, small turbo, zero lag, short ratio box set up that is so useable. Pete's car puts out 405bhp and he was crossing the line at Curb at 100mph, I with just over 300bhp was crossing at 99mph so there is obvioulsy something to be said for the set up I currently have so I don't think I want to stray too far from it. I could lose £5k into a forged rebuild and big turbo and might just end up with a right handful of a car that I can't get the most out of with my current driving ability. However the break is long and the mind wanders often so who knows. Torque is the one area I would really like to improve, for example: Curborough, flat track Roy's crossing speed 105mph, mine 99mph, 6mph difference. Shelsley, hillclimb, Roy 104mph me 94 mph, 10 mph difference. Which seems to suggest that his car with all its torque can overpower the gradient whereas mine with very little suffers considerably. I'm not sure how scientificaly correct that is but there must be something there. Desicions desicions eh'. Wonder what my wife will say when she gets a £2.99 handbag from Matalan for christmas .

When my Sti was 'stock' it was an absolute delight to drive, and i installed the RA box to improve things and went slower. It ruined a great car.

The engine changes have not given much imo, but the chassis a lot more.
This is why i said a few posts ago that i was not sure that what I have done is correct.

I have been in Roy's car on the road, and it is sublime. He gunned it a few times and the package is awsome, so so much better than my Impreza.

The ingredient needed is torque and for me, a much greater courage to hit the hill harder.
Roy's EVO also has 235 tyres, that is a whole 30mm of tyre each corner, about 15% more rubber to each tyre. Grip that can tolerate the engine.

Indeed a lot to think about, but my plan is written!

Remember to pop something VERY expensive in the handbag...

I guess it didn't suit your driving style, I have driven 'fast' road cars with the longer ratios and I just cannot imagine being able to extract 100% from the engine without the short ratios. Does the type R box you are installing have longer ratios than my RA box?

STi R & RA v3/4 & v5/6 are all the same ratios according to the info I have

Matalan do not sell £1.99 handbags big enough to get that lot in (I'm told).

The type R box is between the very early RA (lowest ratio's of all the boxes) I had to the Sti v3.
A front LSD will be going in to to get the most out of the front end grip, and an RA Kazz plated rear diff.

I get confused when people start on about diffs, I think when I reach what i consider a wall in times i may venture down that route but until then i think theres plenty more tenths to be found in my car yet.

 

The factory offered an option on a front helical diff in the Type R box (TY754) and i assume this was worth having if offered?
Gerry: you are prob right in which case i will be happy. I will fit this transmission and persevere this time to learn it well.

Thinking hard about dccd control at the moment, but getting distracted by something else too...

hope the works bonus is good (or existant).

If you fit a type R setup im assuming the drive will become largely rear biased like mentioned in the thread earlier, the equivalent of dccd in the open position, that is of absolutley no use on the hills, i know i did my first few events this way and spent most of my runs totaly sideways, which is spectacular but slow. Also launching is near impossible. You must fit a dccd or the neetronics unit to rein the car in.

 

Yep: That is the plan if I can find a stock controller then will use one, but a Neetronics is possible, and someone from work is in the USA till Xmas, so could bring me one back as a pressie!
however, I think someone might be offering to make me a demon controller 'prototype' which i like the sound of.(love that kind of stuff, bit like being at work)

Get that soldering iron working!

 

Had a blast around Curborough for the first time in my Sti RA today. Started with the diff in the green and had two very scary excursions across the grass!

Running two thirds was a good setting car ran very well. Having run 4x4 Cosworth and pulling third only once in a lap at Curborough I had quite a surprise.

Drop to second for the mole hill, pull third on exit into next bend, back to second in hair pin, third, fourth along straight,very close to rev limiter at speed trap, hard on the brakes, second back into right hander, ****** third all the way back to mole hill, and so on. Never had 5th on a sprint circuit before, needed it over the finish line……..need bigger brakes to stop it at this point or a parachute!

Lap 18 and gearbox broke!

I have to say thank you to David at API he has mapped me a fantastic machine for the money.

Anyone want to sell me an RA DCCD box? Mine played a great tune on the way home…
