That Sti brace is purely styling, as Richards says; ditch it and fit a proper metal one

Are the Dunlops available in a soft (or wet) compound so they will be grippy from the start line without requiring a couple of laps to warm up (which isn't possible at a hillclimb)?

No, just one compound.
Using wets for a dry hill climb = disaster. Seen it done and fail bigtime (crash)

At £65 each (above) that is 1/2 the cost of a Kumho.(which do work on a hill climb!)

Hi 911 a question for you. With your ast suspensions it's possible to keep the stock height of the car?If I buy them I don't want to lower the car, or at most approx 0.5 0.8 inches.
thanks

The AST's are height adjustable to extreme limits, so you can have them set anywhere including exactly to stock ride height.
If you have them fitted by Powerstation they will set this for you.
A touch lower will make a difference to the looks, but will give beneficial gains in body roll without danger of hitting the underside of the car with full passengers/luggage loads etc.

They are a vertatile unit.

I think you'll need to fit longer bumpstops if you raise the height beyond the coil bind point, which means coil removal if fitted already.

Hi 911, other questions for you

-are compression and rebound adjustable separately?

-have you got more extensive data/spec like a graph?

-how many miles have you done with them?

thanks!

giggio:

I have used 2 types of AST's.
1
The type I spent racing and road use on last year we the ones available on the PowerStation Group Buy.
They are really good simple units well suited to many applications. They have just one damping adjustment so you can very simply tune the damping rate to the springs and to suit your driving 'attitude'.

2
I am now using the far more complex 3 way adjustable units where you can tune the damping to the rate for suspension compression and rebound, plus you can vary the rate of compression rate for fast and slow displacement.

Here is where things are quite complex as i use my Sti on the road and for hill climb competition, and finding a 'mix' that copes with both conditions will be interesting to say the least!

I do not remember seeing your 'name' much on Scoobynet, so here is a quick clip to show you the simple but very effective AST's from last year.
I don't have any damping curves for the units, and drive about 3000 miles each year and 10 serious competetive hill climbs each year too.

Time to get this thread on the road for 2006.

With new tyres (Kumho's again), and the new AST's, there is a bit to do to dial them in.
3 way adjustment sounds a bit complex but it can't be too hard?

The car feels just like the old AST's of last year with the 60/50 springs, so a good starting point, but I need to find some closer settings using the coarse adjustment first, then tweek with the other.

Has anyone done 3 way adjustment before on a road car?
Would be interested to hear your views before I start.

Graham.

done plenty of suspension work on motorbikes and on my mountain bike (got preload, compression, rebound & a flood gate to play with on my bike )

if i remember rightly you've got fast & slow adjustments, slow is for suspension travel when braking and accelerating, fast is for soaking up sharp suspension movements like kerbs. It's all in my head how to set it up but can't put it into to words very well

I have an instruction sheet from AST which says the same Kev.
Just looked out of the window and we are covered in 20mm of snow, so can't really play today.
Will do the decat , take the wife for a walk, charge the 911's batteries and get it running, and finish off the designs for the racetrack's signs.

Normal weekend.

Wheel nuts are a nice matching colour!

We know YOU and David are very busy, I was thinking of the projectionists on here.
Just been looking at 22B and things are a bit quiet over there too.
Hill climber John Stevenson's Impreza will be great when done.

Right, enough of this. The family are up and about now so i can make some noise in the garage doing the de cat swop over.

Then why are you on list 1A's?
Hope you keep away from the Midland/Leaders Champs!

Are you coming after Roy?? Can't be me as I'm too slow to be a challenge.

Have been against Roy, he's got 500 hp I am doing the class 1c so no 1b tyres allowed ,anyway nice to be fast with a slower tyre... will join the midland events later in the year but doing Harewood as I am getting to know the Hill abit, sounds like you will be going well with the new mods you have this year....

I think my best year was 2005!
This year will be very difficult with the New Boys coming in...

Took a long hard look at the ride height and the rake of the car over the weekend while doing the Down Pipe, and thought the rear was a bit down so added 10mm at the rear and 5 at the front to make it all look right (to my mind).

Surprising what so little can do, but after a run over the local sleeping policemen and back it now looks much better.

It is an old question, but any thoughts on rake for a classic?

The rear has always sunk on this car no matter what struts and springs are fitted which is stupid, but it always has settled low.
Time will tell.

Just wish the weather would get better so i can get some road miles on the tyres, the brakes and AST settings.

hello,

graham you raise the car a little bit and the handling is better? I always thought a lowered car had better handling...

Last year halve way through the season I did shift the weight(by use of the coil overs) of the car towards the back to give it a more level appearance so I would have more 4 wheel drift and I thought that worked well ...but have since moved it back for this year to the front ...not sure why yet, but if it goes better I'll know why if the track is smooth then the 3 way will not really give you much advantage I would of thought, soft compliance (springs) and little body roll (ARB'S) is the way I do things ........
