Hehe - if you managed to keep up with a WRX in a French pram, I have to ask - was the WRX being driven by a woman?

I think that your answer, fortunately is that the driver was a *****! see below.

I used to drive a Saxo VTS, which is the same car as a 106 GTi underneath. I now have a bug-eye WRX (standard until recently), so I guess I'm quite well placed to compare the two cars. The WRX wins every time.

The driver was probably in 3rd waiting for the turbo lag to subside.

Anyway, does anybody know how much heavier a bug-eye is than a classic and the relative performance? Didn't realise there was so much difference - might need to buy something older.

Classic is circa 1235kg

WRX (bug eye) is circa 1395kg

Quite a bit of extra weight, certainly 2 average passengers

From my own experience, I followed a new WRX in my classic and had to back off once I had 3rd gear otherwise I would have gone through the back of him.

I think in terms on 0-100 the classic approx 2seconds quicker.

Having driven a blobeye and a classic back to back I would certainly say that the classic is -subjectively at least- noticably quicker. I could certainly believe a 2 sec advantage to 100mph. To me, the Classic's acceleration seemed more akin to the new age Sti than the WRX, although it doesn't quite have the OMG factor when the the turbo takes hold as with the Sti.

That said, we do have to acknowledge that the far superior refinement and less agressive delivery of the new age cars does disguise their speed somewhat. They are still very brisk cars!

Delusional??
- Excellent - I haven't laughed so much in ages ........ have you ever thought that he couldn't be bothered to waste the petrol??

106 Gti - 120bhp / 1050kg - 115bhp per ton
02 Wrx - 215bhp / 1380kg - 156bhp per ton

Thanks for the data. Still don't think I'll be too worried if I ever find myself on the A130 though.

You sure the scoob driver wasn't waving you past as he/she was tired of yet another hot hatch stalker..?!

Or maybe they were seeing if they could get past the magic 300 miles out of a tank of fuel..?!! LOL
