There is a Mk2 Golf in the Midlands running an Audi 1.8 Turbo lump VAG eh So that may be why it had the sound of a dump valve.

I find a lot of the time no-one wants to play, yet when i was younger i would have raced anything just to see its poerformance.

The 1.8T as standard has a recirculating DV, so normally pretty quiet.

As has been said on here before..... Subaru has gone a bit backward performance wise, where other manufactures have leapt forward. Just look at the torque figures around 40-70mph for newer Diesels. It's just shocking.

IMHO... a well modded Classic/Newage over the 300BHP bracket (with torque to match) should dispatch most things... apart from high end sports cars of course

In my 'hefty' 04 Wagon I'm always getting caught out by Audi's and Golf TDi's, but recently a Red Y reg Escort RS1600i

We both came of a roundabout on the A264 near Horsham at the same time and accelerated quite hard. The Escort just stayed there. There was no way I was getting past him. Next roundabout gave him the thumbs up, he dropped a cog.... a few flames and bangs....and he was gone.

I know my Wagon is not ultra fast, but it's not slow either.

AFAIK... the standard RS1600i was only marginally quicker than XR3i. That was one well modded RS1600i !

I agree, i think the gap in performance between scoobs and other cheapily available cars is getting smaller. Take the new vauxhall astra vxr(i think). Its 240ps has loads more modern toys as standard or as options and its price starts at £19k. On a dry day this thing will probably give an STI ppp a run for its money. I think subaru need to start upping the standard specs of their cars to remain competitive. I mean look at the PPP. Its a 2k option normally, and what you get for your money is software and an exhaust, disgarding a practically new one in the process, talk about waste. Its clearly a money making exercise.

I had a shock from an S3 in my 320bhp P1! Off a roundabout on his **** and didnt seem to be making anything on him at all, then at the top end of second and into third I went past him like he was stood still. We pulled over for a chat and he was well shocked, it was running 260bhp and usually kills STI's!

Had my ar$e handed to me on a plate by a VW Toerag diesel whilst driving a tek3 classic a while back. Between 80 mph and the scary end of 140 he was happily pulling-away from me. German autobahn of course.

A 650bhp (at the wheels!) Skyline at Scooby Shootout!

Although I was in the lead for a few hundred yards, made me feel like I was stood still when he finally got it moving!

Took completely by suprise by some quick old Orange Clio, didn't seem right it moved rather quickly.

They call em sleepers apparently,

Would like to have known he was there then I could have given him a run for his money 380BHP or not.

i've got a MY05 WRX300 PPP, ford fiesta pop plus 1.1 e reg. 17 year old tossa in traffic light grand prix. pulled up along side of me, revving loads and edgeing forward, i started to rev and he heard the ppp gurgle, did a bit of wheelspin when the lights changed to amber. i sat on the lights laughing, and watching him dissapear in a huge cloud of blue smoke.poor chap, didn't even make it to the next set of lights. 1/2 mile later he was at the side of the road, LOTS of steam coming from the car and giving me the finger. best fun for ages!

When I was running on 3 spark plugs (long story - thanks julian), I was eaten by a pug 205gti... God knows what he'd done to it, a dark grey one with cream leather interior.. Either way it was incredibly quick...
I was also done by an 'Lreg type shape' M3 by some young twonk (wanted to cry) and by a CL55 AMG (no complaints there though )...

Had a blast with a TT quattro (3ltr) on the m25, I was sitting at around 90 in the fast lane when I was approaching a red (rather Nice) 3ltr quattro TT, he must have seen me as he put his foot down in the center lane and decided he didnt wanna let me pass............WronG!!!! I wiped the smiles off their faces when I moved over and tailgated him (not Good I know...) and pushed him and kept pushing him till we were sitting at just above 140 in the fast lane.....and he bottled it and moved aside and I just cruised past him, His mrs soon changed the look on her face, Perhaps she Threw loads in her Knickers. He didnt even look, felt stink thats why.

....But thats not all, half hour or so later, I pulled into a services to grab the Loo, (well deserved) and as I came out, the TT pulls along side me, He jumps out, still not aknowledging my BIG Grin but to my surprise was being eyed up by his Lady...mmmmm,tatsy one too, even got a cheeky wave believe it or not as I was reversing!!!!....P**ck teasing *ow!!!!

last summer, i was following a TVR Chimera over some quiet country roads when we both turned off left onto a long straight and i just knew he was going to floor it. although i thought hed leave me standing i decided to floor it as well and see how i fared. towards the end of the straight hed only pulled about 2 car lenghts and as he slowed a little for the bend i flew passed with him looking rather pissed off-not bad for a uk turbo with just a filter and afterburner exhaust! my exhaust also made his v8 sound a bit limp and he probably broke down round the corner as well!

Still waiting to be shown a clean pair of heels by anything yet (P1 with 300bhp/ 300lbft torque) - and I know there are a good few cars around my way that could well achive that - but it's just waiting for that opportunity to arise.

Best moment I've had was against a 996 turbo - I managed to catch him off boost from about 70 and get right in his slip stream (must have been inches away - yes I know it's not big or clever) - but he could not pull away up to about 120 then we both had to back off due to traffic - glad to see that we both acknowledged each other afterwards..

This is a good thread, a tonic to the usual 'I took out a 911 Turbo at the lights'.

I got overtaken by an allroad 2.7T the other day, whilst I was on a straight in the 'warming up period' for my car. Didn't want to thrash it, kept it below 3500.

A C2 VTR/VTS thingy yesterday had his foot down, and I was only pulling away only slowly, rather than watching most things recede in the rear view....similar to Audi TTs and Boxsters from a standstill.

Couldn't make up any ground following a TVR Griffith on my way to work a few weeks ago, either, though he was always within a couple hundred metres.

Totally correct about cars getting much faster, I tend to calculate the power at wheels as engine output minus transmission losses, making my car about 180-190bhp compared to the rest (260ish Tek 2 old shape 99 wagon). This figure doesn't compare favourably to the newer cars out there.

Time for a hybrid TD04, new fpr, ported headers and a proper remap...£££

Bought the wife a mini, so its now my full time project now m8. Pe1820f is going on (the IHI vf34 is coming off) along with uprated rods, pistons, one piece valves and a gas flowed head, possibbly a 50bhp shot of nos to boot. It should be a little quicker after the afore mentioned mods.
