I had Uk classic scoob with a few mods..300bhp...A WRX witha few bits..280ish

Also had a E36 M3 and a E34 M5.

M's are better for real world life..and just as quick if not faster..

Scoobs are fun..at weekends!!

Went to a really nice restaurant once in my scoob.Didnt really realise what i was in till i got there,i felt ashamed..

Did you tell us you had a spec c? LOL oh, yeah, I'm sure you did....

Ring times aside (and to be fair, the ONLY valid comparison to the spec c is the CSL - and tell me again, which was faster? ) there is no getting away from the fact that in real world performance figures you cannot buy a Subaru Impreza from International Motors which is quicker out of the box in a straight line than a current model standard M3 BWM (manual, tiptronic & probably "gay" cabriolet as well)

And I'd be pretty confident that a standard coupe on the better balanced standard 18" wheels would be quicker round a track in the hands of someone who knew how to drive both cars.

Having said that, lets not kid ourselves. Neither a standard M3 nor any of the currently available UK Imprezas are particularly effective track tools, DCCD or no DCCD.

You're saying that some imprezas are faster. Tell me again, what was the CSL's time at Nurburgring?

Ashamed of mine........ not at all, but others may be ashamed of theirs once seeing mine though. Recently hit 365bhp @ 1.19bar, stock internals, stock turbo and using plain old Optimax ....... loads more stuff to do yet and get through with testing....... but more details on that in the near future.

Did'nt run at PS the other w/e.... had no need to.

So your car isn't factory standard then? At the very least a remap for UK fuel? Perhaps a filter and decat as well no doubt. We'll just have to wait and see then...

Don't worry about the weight...... that will be further reduced from the already lighter weight compared to other Newage Scoobs. Obviously the BHP figure and power delivery isnt anywhere near final and just work in progress. Couple that with copious amounts of torque and full boost around 3-3.5k, perhaps on the road the weight difference may not actually be the be all and end all. It's all certainly going in the right direction so will be interesting to see how it turns out. As you are already aware (by comments I have seen from Bob about the way your car drives), it isnt all about peak figures and to be honest they dont tell the whole story. A car needs to have fast spool up, strong mid range and pull very well at the top end........ thats what I want.

Unfortunately I havent a standard plot for a Spec C, as regards to JDM standard spec running JDM map and Jap Fuel. I have some others though, that are a bit more interesting! lol

I wrote my message after reading through the whole thread, and from memory it involved repeated messages of you blowing your own trumpet in among a sea of people who slag the BMW because it did not live up to expectations of being "really" fast etc.

Just felt that it was turning into a Tony Burns appreciation society thread, so I brought it all crashing back down to earth. Kind of a knee jerk reaction thing.

Sure you are a great guy, read loads of good stuff about the car you have, respect.

John, you need to drive the CSL its amazing. I had a test drive of one today and its a remarkable piece of kit. The throttle response and noise is out of this world.
My only problem is that the non adjustable seats hurt my back after 30 mins so I c'ant live with it as a daily driver

See if they like the look of me to drive the vanilla one first Booked over the phone, will dress up a little since they don't seem to take me seriously in casuals, and I don't mean a Burberry cap Feel like a little boy going to a massive sweet shop, this is altogether a different level of posh for me LOL. Will turn up in an 05 Skoda That feels posh to me, my Mum had a rusty Escort that always broke down...

So I will feel a little bit like a chancer even though I am not chancing it if you know what I mean. If it is really good I'll get one, even if not the red leather one that is optioned to heaven and still £40k for an April 04 model.

 

I'm in the process of trying to buy an E46 M3. Currently got a classic scoob and it has been a great car, but a new STi was never on the cards - want something with more class and while subaru's are great fun they lack a certain sophistication.

M3 may not have the same power delivery as a subaru but it is still incredibly quick and exudes quality. You pay more but you get alot more.

Big debate is over the SMG or manual. I've now tried both a couple of times and I'm plumping for manual. SMG looks to be excellent but on a few occasions when driving it demonstrated a few annoyances that have put me off (eg a feeling of being in neutral at certain times and not knowing exactly what gear I'm in). Possibly this would improve with use; the up changes certainly take a bit of practice to get smooth.

Power delivery is instant and constant from any gear - not always the case with a turbo car.

And whoever said the M3 is for posers, how can you say that when driving an impreza with a big spoiler, loud exhaust and a big hole in the bonnet?! I think it is an incredibly good looking car, much more pleasing to the eye than a scoob!

 

John, if your test drive was anything like mine be prepared to kangaroo or stall it before you get used to it! I'd not kangarood a car since I learnt to drive so it was a little odd to do it in the M3 after all this time. Still, I like the smell of hot clutch Classy

There are some disturbingly nice 996 TTs in the 50-60 range on Autotrader.... seems that an M3 at 40 a year old is relatively overpriced?

I went from the STI7 to a coupe M3 with SMG , loved it from day one.
Went hunting for a different car 6 months ago,looked around at loads of cars but ended up with another M3 but this time a convertible still with SMG and still love it.
Seems to be the best for me for the price tag,
and now the suns coming out its great

Whats best is now I'm growing old I can still have fun but rest the poor clutch leg

 

John I hope all the above is tongue in cheek. Just remember what you do for a living and the fact they are just car salesman. You've probably forgotten more things than they have ever known. They should be privileged for your potential business and if they're not go to the next dealer.

I know what you mean about feeling like a chancer - there is something about the automotive industry these days that makes genuine people with hard earned cash feel like spotty neds chancing their arm. I'm interested in test driving a VX220 Turbo but don't have the guts to ask for one? Why? I have an S2000 for crying out loud - the VX is well within reach, etc. Mad world.

I've not commented on this thread because I've not driven an M3 - however, I've been in plenty of fast cars and seen plenty others on the move. I've only seen two M3s under hard acceleration and by god where they shift.......real fast!!! Actually, make that 3 and he was shifting fast backwards behind a 400bhp type-r.......but that's to be expected

Arhh yes the dressing up bit.

I must admit I love my M3 but the dealers well there another breed.
Once they found out I owned a business they were interested in me but too late told them where to stick it, especially on my first M3. I told them I didn't want my Scooby going to such a bunch of stuck up *****.
I approached 6 different BMW dealers before I found one who treated me like a customer, but must admit even now when I go in to some dealers in my Jeans and Tshirt they look down at you. That is untill they find out what car you came in.
I used to love going to my Scooby dealership, new me by name as soon as I walked in and had a good laugh but that does change with owning a BM. ( seems to for me anyway )

 

Deep, I'm not really the pushy sort. I'm very confident in my own domain - ie at work, and I'm not bad after a few drinks but otherwise fairly quiet. I'm from a simple background and these flashy gits get to me I'm afraid. I have a very sensitive bull****ometer but I don't like "prestige" car dealers and their attitudes. I feel that less is more and all that. Trouble is, how else to honestly test and purchase a quality car...
