B&Q Warehouse do USB cables for around £3 each - one to remember.

I've ordered 20 Belkin USB cables from one of our suppliers yesterday. Under 50p each.

Seeing as Ive alread admitted it to PSLewis...... I used to work for PCServicecall as an engineer, it was all I could find after I left uni as a mature student. I import cars from Japan now, but before I quit I worked for PCW sorting out f*ck-ups; quite a big job!

Believe it or not there are no sheets handed out to the staff with what to sell and they also get nothing extra for selling their extended service, they are just targeted on it.
I used to work part time for them and yes there are sheets handed out. they work on a commission basis and whatever pc makes them the most commission is the best thing since sliced bread. they also get a commission on their extra cover, with their 5yr extended cover getting the sales guy at least £15 in commission as well as the comission on the sale of the machine. At chrimbo we didn't even need to "sell" the machines, just put them on a trolley and run them thru the till. money for old rope.

I can imagine your role was quite challenging!

Hope the car importing is going well now.

but for picking up bits and pieces just because you have to have them now, they aint that bad

and to be fair to the staff, its better than stocking shelfs at tesco's which pays about the same
Are you actually aware og the pay structure in PC World? I think that you will find they pay considerably more than tesco.

I work for PC World as a business Accounts manager and I feel that alot of the negative comments made about the staff are unfair and a complete generalisation.

Whilst I do agree that they are some "bull****ters" that work for them..can you tell me a company which doesnt?

There are weekly CABS lists (cash added bonuses) which do have small incentives on them normally in the region of between £1-£20..which is mainly on a select few printers, cables and sometimes lead PC deals funded by the manufacturers.

The sales guys do not receive anything extra for selling the Service agreement...you may be referring to the christmas period where as an incentive for staff they recieve 20 points for 5yr cover (20 points=£5 voucher or £6.50 in your wages) during selected weeks of the festive period.

PC world no longer offer 3 or 5 yr agreements unless for Business use.

At the end of the day they are like any large company..people will have good and bad opinions of them but I do think there are alot of haters out there who are just obnoxious like to think they know it all geeks who have nothing better to do on a friday night at 8pm than to go to there local store and try and catch staff out.

Hate is not without reason.

Staff can be cought out at any time of the day, not just 8pm on Fridays.

My sister was looking to buy a new pc so she wanted me to go with her to PC World for some advice on certain models (i did recommend DELL but its her money), she was then interested in a particular model, so when the sales assistant started asking about extended warranty before even discussing the pc specifications, my sister pointed out that it wouldnt be required as i would carry out any future upgrades or repairs. He then delved into his trusty book of tales and stated that on that particular model, it would require a motherboard change to allow any future modifications. Is it me or is this guy the most useless streak of p**s ever to be employed by this company. Not only is he talking out of his ringpiece, he also lost the sale.

It should be called PC Universe, as most staff are on different planets.

And you can get USB cables from E-buyer from about 2 quid a time

He knows computers have motherboards, so he was probably the local expert.

I went into my local pc world on Thursday looking to buy an ipod photo. They had them in stock (I could see them on the shelf behind the counter), but do you think I could get anyone to serve me? Was waiting around for nearly 20 minutes trying to get someone to sell me one, and evetually just walked out and ordered one over the web instead (from Apple).

Have seen an occaisional bargin in there, but the staff are hopeless...

So I must be hopeless then? Was the shop busy? We often have to run a queing system as sometimes the staff are all busy with other customers. It is the ignorant and impatient people who demand they be served then and there are the ones that annoy me.

Again I cannot comment on what goes on in the english stores, but we have very helpful and knowledgable staff in our Branch in Glasgow and consistently achieve Mystery Shop results of over 90% week in week out.

Notorious; youre on a hiding to nothing here. You forget that whilst everyone who visits Currys isnt a refridgeration engineer and everyone who visits Dixons isnt a TV engineer; everyone who visits PCW is a computer expert.

Im more aware of the problems that PCW has as a chain and of DSG's shortcomings than anyone here, but in my experience most of the complaints that I have dealt with in person and heard on here are without merit, and thats being generous.

My girlfriend currently deals with exec complaints for Simon Turner and the 'I was waiting for 10 minutes (give me money, give me money)' type of crap outweighs the real issues that need to be resolved by a factor of about 10:1

No the shop was not busy. Just some bored looking staff wandering around with about 2 customers in the entire shop. Eventually collered someone and asked if I could buy one, and they said "it's not my department I'll go and find someone". Stood around for 10-15 more minutes and eventually gave up. I wouldn't expect that sort of service from any shop (not just pcw).

Can't comment about any other store than Swindon, (Glasgow is a bit far to travel) but I've had this level of service on numerous occaisions when I've been in there, so it was not an isolated incident. I also have relatives and friends that have tried to use their service center, only to bring the pc around to me afterwards to sort out properly, (although I must admit that hasn't happened lately).

Btw, I actually am a computer expert. Build my own pcs, and write computer software for a living

i used to work for currys which is pretty much the same as pc world with the way stuff is sold (or it was back then) (from memory dixons own them both)

everytime i walk in to a shop i know whats going to be said to me
anyway, my experiance of pc world is pretty much the same of everybody else in here

my local "superstore" component centre is frankly SHOCKING, the 1st time i went in there i thought maybe it was an off day, and it would be sorted out next time i arrived, about 1 year later and the place is still a **** tip, empty racks, missing price tickets, stuff stored in racks with other items prices on them.
the place is a fooken disgrace!

bought sum memory from there a few weeks back (i know, i know but i needed it there and then for work or i was stuffed)
took the empty packaging to the counter to be told that they dont sell that type anymore so WTF was it doing out on display , honestly helpful bloke had a check on stock and came back with 2 diffrent types, one of which was corsair which was actualy a bit cheaper, so all is not lost, although a few months earlier i had bought the same type from a diffrent local small shop (had no stock on the day) for about £20 cheaper

plus i must add, i was in there a few days ago, i needed a 80mm to 60mm fan convertor thing, i bought one from them a while back but needed another, hung around the pc clinic counter for about 7 mins before sumbody came over to ask what i wanted, explained about the convertor but was told they dont sell them and do i want to try a 120mm fan

120mm fan is going to fit a 60mm cooler isnt it

2 blokes behind the pc clinic counter messing about with a pc, not one of them walked over to ask me what was up (pc clinic was right next to the component bit.

I don't think the people in the clinic are allowed to talk to customers...

Im not sure what the point of this thread was; you start off asking what people think of PCW and say that your friend works for them; later in the thread it transpires that its you who works for them.

Iain; if your local store is that bad then Id advise you to write to Simon Turner and complain, thats the only way that slack stores will be brought into line.
