I found if you de-cat the car it seems more responsive especially when I removed the cat from the downpipe, when I first got my scoob I was a bit dissapointed with its performance, but after I de-cated it, I found it to be much better of a drive.

You're mistaken; its an 'I cant drive' thread. How exactly should a turbocharged car be expected to 'drive' when it isn't on boost? Even though the B16a and similar engines only really come to life over 4,250 Rpm (as do all 16v engines); at 3,000 Rpm it's bound to out-perform a car with an 8:1 compression ratio and a bunged up exhaust isn't it?

People ask where the 'Scooby Wave/Scooby-spirit' has gone; the problem would appear to be that the cars are now relatively common and bought by non-enthusiast drivers.

Was thinking similar myself today - MY99 Standard UK vs Alfa 33 4WD (8 valve engine on carbs) with 170 ish bhp - Alfa easier & more pleasant to drive round town because of low down torque, nothing like as quick on the open road though

Pity they don't sell it with the US spec 2.5ltr engine.
Bangs out 300bhp/300lbsft, and this is with low grade us fuel.
Thing pulls really well from low down, and goes like a rocket after that.

Subaru should really begin importing these - the std 2.0ltr will never have enough low end power.

You seem to be miss-interpreting speed for drivability...which is what this thread is on about
