Re your last query. Recent comparison of my Elise up against our Clio Cup (which is no slouch see threads about them ragging Scoobs on this forum). In straight line terms the Elise is quicker off the mark by a couple of car lengths then maintains the gap to the top of third gear indicated 75-80ish then the Clio starts to slowly gain and pull away.

This translates to being able to overtake most stuff pretty quickly unless its travelling at in excess of the motorway limit. The basic Elise has got pretty good low end shove as well so its pointy and squirty about town. Its not like Scoobs that have to be going pretty quickly before they start to entertain. (This is really the main reason I got an Elise. I wanted a performance car I could enjoy without having to break any speed limits in.)

Best bit is cornering in the dry - it just feels so well planted on the road.

 

Is the only cosmetic difference between the S1 and S2 the front lights and where the rear exhausts come out?

If so, can you put the S2 headlights on the S1?

 

I made the change from a scoob to an elise last december.
In the end i opted for a S1 111s. The main differences being vvt and close ratio box.
I do miss the sound of the scoob. I do have an induction kit and a ss sports exhaust but it still sounds like an angry wasp in a tin can
I have not really pushed the elise yet on the road. I have booked in for a 1st lotus training day in march to learn how to handle the car a little. I dont think they are quite as forgiving in the handling department as the scoobs are.

The S2 is a heavier, more forgiving car than the S1.
Think of it as a bug eye and the S1 as a classic.

 

That kind of puts me off a touch Wilf I get to use my Mother's 172 (non Cup) quite a bit but TBH it feels as flat as a fart to me. I have no confidence what so ever in it's overtaking ability. I know the cup is quicker but i can't see it being that much different.

 

A friend at work bought a new one about 6 months ago. Hopelessly impracticle. Nice though.

I considered an Elise, then a VX220 before i got my Scoob, discounted them as not being practical enough as a full time car. Scoob's gone now and I've got a company car for practical... I need a toy again.

Did a mate a favour at weekend by driving his VX for him when he moved house, and now I've got the wants again. Currently counting my pennies to see if I've enough to buy my best mate's VX off him.

How's Mel? And have you replaced the Scoob yet?

 

I have had my S2 Elise for just under 2 years now 25K, up until 6 months ago, it hadnt missed a beat, since then I have had so many problems including HGF, go in with your eyes wide open, it is a specialist car, I would not call it unreliable, but expect to replace parts which you wouldnt normally replace on a Scoob or similar, servicing is reasonable, fuel consumption good.

I very nearly sold mine due to the problems, but took my baby for a 150 mile jaunt on sunday, roof off, heater on full blast, and go.
The handling is simply mind blowing, the brakes so precise, you can feel when they are going to lock, steering very direct and pointy, I have about 150 bhp, which is plenty, I got bored with 118bhp, not enough grunt, the gearbox can be a bit rough, but then Im used to Honda Type R boxes.

Well worth getting some driver training, in the wet it is quite easy to loose the bak end, but with practice it can be caught quite easily IMHO.

Just sold the scoob and am looking for a practical car. I'm thinking about an elise in a while as a "toy" to complement the boring oil burner that I'll be going for...

Hot damn, I wish I hadn't read this thread: I'm now considering a 2 grand lump of a car and a s1 or s2 elise

Exactly what I have, own a ZX 1.4 that cost £1500 and my S2 Elise with a few mods

Best of both worlds, do all the miles and all the wet weather journeys in the ZX, and then weekend breaks, touring and trackdays in the Elise.
