They've dug the road up outside my house!

Just to confirm, was all sorted by the time I got home last night. Just need a week or so before they come and fully reinstate it, fine by me. My biggest fear was where to park over the weekend as all dropped kerbs and yellow lines on my road.
DT, I would think that an Insurance company would pay out, but you would have to prove conclusively that you were blocked, ie photos, or a statement from the contractor saying that they had blocked your driveway (don't know as to the likelihood of that though!)
DF, sounds absolutely spot on and what I was saying to them. They told me it was a 'new' contractor, so obviously had no idea how to go about these things!!?? I won't be sueing or chasing some sort of compensation (as some people might have you believe), there was no harm done, but I will be writing to them to complain about it. This is what I think the vast majority of normal people in this country would do.
TT, can you imagine if someone like Beadle had turned up there? I would then be doing my best to look amused at the whole thing!! At least I could swear at him on TV though!
Thanks for comments.

Maybe your action will make them think twice in future.

Totally agree. They've (Southern Electricity) already told me that they will make sure it doesn't happen again and they will speak to the contractor. The guy from the council also told me that he would be raising it at their quarterly meeting with the contractors, utilities etc.
But these considerations are hardly new, so presumably other people will be inconvenienced by this sort of thing before they get any better!

Similar thing happened to me one day i was going to work....with my car still sitting on my drive!!!
To say i was like 'WTF' would be an understatement! They then came out with two of the narrowest steel ramp like things (the tyres were just wider than them i seem to remember!) and laid them over the hole and told me to drive over them!
As i had to drive 38 miles to work i'd no option!
My point?
Surely when they clearly see by doing this work they will be blocking two cars on a driveway they would at least come in and recommend you take them out first??
Wasn't too happy at having to leave my car out on the street for 4 days either!
