There is no need to loose the maf, mount it close to the air intake ie in std position and then attache the extended filter, that may be ok for you. The distance effect is quite startling isn't it. The APS also moves the maf too far away from the inlet, I am talking about "keep it close".

I would be interested to know (with figures) how effective the std airbox is with much of the box cut away and lots of cold air fed to the filter. The std size filter has a big enough surface area?

the O/e air box with a K+N is good for well over 320 bhp but I do not know how much over.
