Which mapper??

cant comment on andy's work, but given his ability and knowledge with the rest of what he does, I would expect it to be firs rate.
I know that pavlo (paul) is also excellent.
I am also more than happy for pat to map my car as his mapping so far has led to no noise on the knocklink and 550+bhp on the rollers.
I used to use Bob to map my car but his distance from me and the fact that he is so popular that you have to wait months for a session puts me off.
Have to say the last time I visited PE after one of Bobs map, the gas analyser indicated it was dangerously lean. Experience tells me to trust Bob over the gas analyser but there was some doubt in my mind and as a result I cancelled the next track day I had booked just in case.
Some months later the engine suffered an UNRELATED big end failure so I never got the chance to have the map sorted.
Don't think it would put me off going to him again, but with the rest of the chocie available it would never be necessary.

Bob
He mapped my STI when I had knocklink & CEL issues with another mappers work..
Car is totally different now....pulls harder and I never get more than 2 greens.
Location wise (SW) he would be hard to beat...IMOA

This will naturally create a delay if he only maps one day a week !

so the first mapper still charging for work that he can't do, can't believe its worth the garages reputation - do mappers not have a traning course or something before ecu tek give them the softare

LOL.. Branko is a bit hard to like isn't he. I bought a Link from BRD (before i got the Apexi) and when i said i was going to map it myself it felt like i'd told Branko i'd slept with his wife . Definately didn't approve at all... doesn't matter that as an engineer i deal with more complex things that a bl**dy combustion engine everyday, i couldn't possible have the intelligence to map my own car. Felt like telling him i didn't want the ecu (and should have... horrid 6 row Links!!). Oh and becasue my car was older than 3 years it must be about to blow up .
Rant over

Lol, Branko by all accounts aint so bad. He is certainly one of a kind!
If you talk through what seems like attitude he is very helpful....
Anyways, Pavlo all the way for me.
Reasons being that i believe he truly gets a feel for the way the car is acting/performing, rather than just pumping numbers in because 'that is what it should be'. I also feel comfortable with how he asks me to drive the car. Pretty important things IMHO. I dont have personal experience of any other mappers on my own car but have experienced pretty much everyone elses mapping at one point or another. If i lived in scotland i would probably go to Andy, but location is also a key thing... Which is why i am buying an Apexi from Andy F tomorrow and Paul is mapping it (not my car)

Pat is a mapper who works privately and as a "contractor" for other companies such as API. Very good and well respected. He does Tek3 for later cars and scoobyecu chips for early classics. He did my car (which is slightly unusual being high compression engine + TD05 turbo) and I am very happy with the results. He is always happy to make adjustments if needed.
From my trawling around SN:
Bob Rawle is also a mapper and general scooby guru with *very* good reputation.
Andy F is a mapper, into his mappable (pilot adjustable) ECU's (apexi FC), and had fastest scoob in country (and it had a top-mount IC!!). I think he is based in scotland.

I had my STi5 EcuTek remapped by one of the above, it killed its big ends 200 miles later. After rebuilding the engine i let the original mapper take another crack at it, i wasnt happy with the results.
I then contacted Bob Rawle to take a look at it for me, we flashed a new base map and started again from scratch, the results were fantastic, totally transformed the car for the better and its still going strong. Bob is a top bloke and a brilliant mapper, highly recomended.
AndyF mapped my 200SX AVCR and SAFC2 and did a fantastic job, he knows how to make the most of what you have available, his results (Third overall at TOTB3) along with Bob's (Halder Icelandic new age, Harvey, Roger Clarke Motorsport, plus his own STi9 and STi5) speaks volumes.
I have seen Richard Bulmers mapping (he does TSL and some of Prosports) and i cant fault his aproach and expertise either. He really knows his stuff on the rally Impreza engines.

I've had one car with a link mapped by Bob @ BR and another mapped with an Apexi by Andy F. Both cars were fairly heavily modified.
Was more than pleased with the results on both cars.
Both guys are amongst the most knowledgeable in the whole Subaru community and I would trust either of them implicitly with my car.

Bob Rawle runs a very succesfull company with a great pedigree, that speaks volumes, almost as much as the great feedback throughout this thread.
Have not had him map my ecu but have bought stuff from him and his attitude is always top notch.
initially I found Branko a little difficult to take, but once I realised that was just his way and he wasnt being arsey with me its been all good since.
If I were in the south of England and needed a link or EcuTEK (amongst others) I wouldnt go anywhere else.
Having said that, I run an apexi pfc and we managed to get 5 people together and group bought Andy.F for a weekend, his attitude was also very impressive, with all the good press on here I was in awe of the man, yet he turned up at Gatwick with his stanley box and backpack and set about putting me at ease.
The drive during mapping was great fun, to put it into context, I had an extra 110bhp (50% ) over standard put through the engine and was driving about like a kid in a sweetshop.
A very important thing to bear in mind when choosing your mapper:
I had difficulties with the car about a month later, it wasnt map related in anyway but still Andy worked with me to sort it out and get me back smiling, phone calls at silly-o-clock, looking back through various mapping zones on the laptop to get a comparison, tweaking here and there.
Andy.f now does EcuTEK mapiing and I have no doubt that his professional attitude will be carried over into that arm of his business.
Pavlo has recently helped a friend of mine out with his car and has turned it from being a bit of a bad runner into a flying machine, I think that Sam asked for his work while he was moving house and still he did it, again, when Sam thought he had issues, Paul was there on hand to check whats going on and advise.
I also await a modified fuel rail from Paul () for my parallel feed.
one factor to bear in mind with these three people (Bob, Andy & Paul) is that none of them has recommended I buy the latest shiniest parts for the sake of it, if Ive had a problem, in each case without exception, I have been given a real world (ie cost effective/wallet friendly) solution when it would have been easy to push for a big sale
so you can rest assured that you are dealing with someone with integrity/honesty.
will I get into trouble for this? Most probably..
I wouldnt let RC touch my car with a sh1tty stick, they have quite a reputation on the mlr but it hasnt as yet extended into our community and searching on here has thrown up fairly consistant results.
Palatine will disagree with me though.

can anyone answer the question of whether or not you have to pay full price of the remapping if you go to someone else? or is it cheaper as its the second remap, and you have already paid for the software!?
also do any of the mappers change the boost restrictor? if so who? cheers

Well if you go back to the same mapper for a change, then the costs are small...though sometimes if you go to another mapper for a 2nd map, they may charge the full wack...Each mapper i would think has there on methods of mapping...Then again you may get lucky...
Though you should try to stick to one..preferably one local to you..

1st re-map price includes the 'licence' then after that
the 2nd re-mapper finds the original 1 and goes from there
i had mine mapped at powerstation in august and with bob
yesterday, bob knew the exact date and time that powerstation did it
and because i already had the 'licence' bob charged me alot less.

LOL at the Branko comments I got on with him fine, just the way he comes across if you take him the wrong way. Even cracked a joke or 2 the other day!
Don't think you'll find there's ever been a complaint against BRD which is very rare.

The only mapper that does work for two of the aforementioned companies 'mapped' a MY03 for me. Twice. Then recommended I damp boost spikes with a dawes.
I gave waiting for phonecalls as to when said 'mapper' was in the area.
I am led to believe said 'mapper' has provided many people with maps they are happy with, but if you have a MY03+ I'd go elsewhere.
ps. I wanted Bob to map it but he's far too busy- now I know why he's so busy- he's the best. And Richard Bulmer is excellent too.
