Car wasn't idling properly.

Check engine light then came on, read the ECU codes which told me it was the MAF. Then the light went out, then came back on agan (can't make its mind up). After it started doing the above, the light stayed out in the end. So I reset the ECU to see if that would bring any errors and it hasn't. I have ordered a new MAF yesterday so I might just fit it anyway.

Car is running an K&N Induction Kit on a P1.
Edited to say the MAF is only 3 months old.

Last time it failed the CEL light never done a thing.

Where can you buy the tool to remove the MAF with. They look like security torx screws holding it in?

Spot on T20 Secure torx, got mine from a local motor parts shop.
Mind you the pins often snap and a regular torx bit can be used

ITG(foam) is covered in a thick green cack
STi(?paper) panel filter is 'dry'
Green and K&N(both cotton) are very lightly oiled
Blitz LM panel filters are dry cotton

Stay away from ITG - stick with K&N / STi pr Green and you will be fine

My car did some strange idle stuff the other night. Got a green spot MAF as well IIRC but it is 5 years old! I haven't noticed anything a miss on the AFR but I do get a big red on the knocklink with light throttle, high revs and 3rd gear I'll invest in a new MAF just in case.

John F, what was the cause of your engine going pop in the end?

Cool

Was told about MAF when I fitted my Blitz SS Induction kit on my MY00............thought "Yeah, yeah"..........engine blew !!

So, now; K&N flat panel, a new MAF every year and a spare one on the shelf JIC

Jimmy

The performance packages are still available for 97/98MY & 99/00MY Impreza Turbo 2000 and are now dealer fit rather than having to be done at Prodrive. As the ECU is now done on an exchange basis, the price has been reduced significantly as well.

Hmm i did a quick MAF check (unplug when warm and idling) and the car almost stalled, but not quite (it started doing that hunting thing).
Reset the ECU until the CEL starting flashing but it just flashed steadily and constantly which means that it didnt think the MAF was a problem.

What next?

Did you have any reason to suspect it before you tried to test it?

Good check IMHO is to just reset the ECU and see how your idle behaves, of fit an AFR gauge.

Well ive changed the old one in the car, really just as a matter of service after i bought the car.

But it doesnt hunt, the MPG is ok (havent actually calculated it!) i just thought the unplug method shows that its still using some ECU correction
