Tough decisions had to be made to stop the UK going into reverse and no doubt there was suffering involved to achieve it - but our relative economic prosperity today owes more than a small amount to the decisions made by Thatcher, a sound base that future governments (Major and Blair) were able to build on successfully.
Sure the country was in a bad way, but as is so often the case when something is at one extreme the reaction towards it is even greater. Ergo we went from one extreme to another with Maggie and frankly her 'greed is good' government was in my opinion as bad or worse that what had gone before.

The big difference now is the Labour Party of old are gone forever whereas Maggie's style of Conservatism is trying to get re-elected in the form of Michael Howard.

As I've said before we have no party in this country that isn't out solely to line its own coffers and hence the election and the political system are a farce. All we are doing in threads like this is arguing over who might make the best captain without noticing the ship has nearly sunk.
